The Top of Wales During a Heatwave? I Think We Should Start Early...

- čas přidán 27. 10. 2023
- We just had to give this great mountain a crack when we were in Wales, but with six paths to the summit, which one should we choose? In the end we went with the quietest route and ended up having the whole place to ourselves (well, until the summit of course!). So did we make the right choice? And more importantly will we even make it in this UK September heatwave?? Join us on this absolutely beautiful climb...

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You might not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation.

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for CZcams Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

Aussie bushwalker here. A good tip for walking in warm weather is to freeze some water i.e. a bottle of water the night before. It will gradually thaw out during the day and will be lovely and cool for quite some time.
Well done guys - that was quite an achievement! I had my heart in my mouth watching you negotiating that ridge, particularly on the way down. The scenery was well worth it, thanks for taking us along with you😅
Thanks Suzanne! I'm glad it wasn't any more scary or I would have struggled!
Try the Crib Goch ridge on the other side - I did it that way back in my younger days(!) - It's very exposed with steep dropoffs on both sides, there were people crawling along it when I was there!
I don't think I will be trying that one😯@@cameronabell76
As you get older it's very true that the descents are much harder on the joints and muscles than going up. I've not taken that route for about 30 years but feel inspired to do it once more. You had a great day for the walk and were very sensible to go up early. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks Gerard! Seriously, the early start was our best decision of the day!
The descent was the trickiest part for me. Feet sliding to the front of my shoes was damn painful.
Steve, you two have got to be healthier than most people in the world. To climb uphill for three hours is a feat. The guy carrying his bike is amazing, he didn't even sound winded when he was talking to you. The views from up there are breathtaking!! Thanks for the video. You and your companion stay safe and well.
Dave in the U.S.
Haha that guy put our efforts in perspective :D
Amazing. I'm afraid of heights and that path was so narrow and close to the edge, it made me feel dizzy. The views were spectacular though and I loved the view from the summit especially. Thanks to both of you for allowing me to visit places I can only dream of going to,
Thanks for coming along Carol!
Yes was thinking the same, narrow path and some steep slopes both sides.
Thanks for using Yr Wyddfa. You said it perfectly. And Rhyd Ddu too. It means a lot to us Welsh speakers Steve!
Thanks, I try to be respectful (but usually fail!) :D
Such a beautiful day for it! I hear you on the crowds that the summit train can provide, but from where I live in the US, the lack of public transit access to the great outdoors can often be disheartening. The idea of a little ride up to the top of the highest peak -- or maybe even taking it halfway so you still get to stretch your legs -- is DREAMY.
Well said Lauren! :)
I have to say - although I'm 'Anglo-Scots' I grew up in North Wales and learned Welsh at school - but for a non-Welsh-speaker, your pronunciation is really quite good (having watched your other North Wales vids too)! Love your channel - keep up the good work!
Stunning scenery, and hats off to you for making it the whole way to the summit! There were some nail-biting drop-offs there along the path - could you hear our collective inner voices saying, “Back up, you’re too close!!”? 😅 Fantastic journey, you two, and many thanks for carrying us along with you. 😁
An absolute pleasure! And unlike most climbs, this really WAS a pleasure, not too difficult, but beautiful scenery :)
Just one old lady on social security who subscribed to your channel. I can’t always read the two different size fonts in your written information. My eyes focus more slowly now and you take the writing down before I can read it all. Your other fans probably don’t have this proble. I watch on my tv with a streaming device. I send this comment on a small iPad.
I really enjoy your videos. I cant travel now, and your videos are a treat. Thanks for them. Just one critical note. Probably the only one.
Hi, I am a new subscriber to your channel after watch seven videos of yours - I just wanted to say how the beautiful chosen music and the long scenery shots with no dialogue is just perfect, it almost like a meditation and I can’t imagine anyone feeling stressed after watch one - the thee in Wales are the perfect example so keep doing what you do so well 👍🏻🌟🌟🌟
Excellent video, as usual. I felt as if we were right there with you & A. Don't know where you get the energy to explore so often!
Now, we know that all Steve Marsh videos MUST include some uphill steps but this was EPIC! What a hike and those views!! We definitely will be going to Wales in the future but with my very dodgey knees, I'm afraid we'll have to "step up" and buy a train ticket if we want to get anywhere near that summit. Well done to both of you. And Alicja, you are a rock star, doing the downhill portion and not spilling a drop of your coffee. I'm in awe. Thanks, as always, for sharing. Have a great week!
Haha the coffee must be protected at all costs! Good for me too because she'd be so grumpy without it :D
I did Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) for the first time via the Llanberis path in 2017 when I was 67. The thing I was not expecting was how busy it was. I never in my wildest dreams thought there would be so many people on their way to the top of a mountain 😄 I would like to go back and climb it by another path, but being 74 now, I'm not sure that I am still fit enough. I do enjoy watching others attempt the ascent. Good job both of you. Wales is amazing 👍
Good job mate, I'm finding it hard enough at 50!!!!
@@steve-marsh no way do you look 50, 😊
I did the Snowdon horseshoe (via Crib goch and round to Llewedd)a few years ago. From Crib goch to the flank of Snowdon there was hardly anyone about. Then as I approached Snowdon summit it was like walking into a busy supermarket, because of all the people that take the train. It surprised me as well! 100 yards further on from the summit and the rest of the route, it was quiet again.
Bloody hell! That's a no from me. Gave me vertigo just watching lol.
I have so enjoyed this episode. Thank you.
Mt Snowden was my favorite part. It is just amazing up there by the look of it.
Hate to say this but i think i like Wales more than Scotland. My ancestors will hate me for that
The Rhyd Ddu path is one of the best routes up and its also one of the quieter ones! Good choice! I like the fact the railway makes the mountain top accessible for people who couldn't physically walk up, but at the same time a lot of people use it as the lazy option and miss out on so much. The great thing about Snowdonia is that there are a lot of other peaks with views of Yr Wyddfa and non of the crowds. If you think that was busy you should see it at lunchtime on a weekend. There are literally people queuing to take a selfie on the summit
Ah good tip to try some of the other summits!
Pair of legends! That's a rough trail compared with the Llanberis path, fair play to you both. Coming down is surprisingly taxing too isn't it. Excellent video.🏴
Coming down I could not stop tripping on the steps 😂
Yeah we underestimated the descent!
Its a lovely walk, over the years I must have walked it 30+ times. I live in the Brecon Beacons, you should come down and hike up Pen Y Fan next :)
When I was younger the promise of a hot chocolate was the only thing that got my sister to the top.
Fair play to you both! Never been up Rhyd Ddu path but it looked incredible!
Also, Steve, you pretty much pronounced those Welsh names spot on. Wish more hiking CZcamsrs could do that. :)
Looking forward to Part 3 of the Welsh trip!
Thanks so much Graeme! I always try to be respectful, but it doesn't always work :D
Well done both of you, a great achievement.
Certainly a long climb, but the view's were amazing.
Look forward to the next one mate.
Cheers Tim, such a fun walk!
...really a worthwhile watch... reminds me of many a tour in the lower alps (where I grew up)... the stony paths can be tricky - an ankle is quickly twisted, if you don't pay attention. The views were majestic, and the weather was with you. A bit sad though that they put the final train stop and cafe right on the top... which could be reserved for aah's and ooh's, admiring the peak without hustle-bustle... it could have been placed just out of sight and noise from the peak... however, sigh... and as it is of course, it allows also people with walking difficulties to have the peak experience! 😎 I still find it sometimes hard to believe, that there are guys cycling down!! 🚲😅
Steven I absolutely love all your videos from the very first one ....keep up the great work ...love it ... regards Tommy from a little town called Gorey in Wexford...southest Ireland..PS ..we have the oldest working lighthouse in the world here in county Wexford Ireland come visit....xx
What a great hike and looks like you chose the right path and the time of day too!
I quite like the idea of mountain railways etc to get to summits; yes, it makes it busy but you get facilities and it means those who wouldn’t otherwise see the summit can get there. If you want to see this sort of infrastructure done well, go to Switzerland where there are cable cars / funiculars and mountain railways everywhere :)
Well said!
Stunning and I have to admire the level of fitness you both have it is certainly more than I could do at my age. Thank you for your efforts and the glorious views till next time stay safe and well.cheers.
Cheers Simon! Let's just say it was a very relaxed afternoon after this!
@5 min :30....It's a good thing you didn't start singing, Steve! 😄😄😄
All kidding aside - it was a fantastic video! The views of the valley and the summit - just magnificent! I couldn't believe there's a cafe at the top! Thanks for doing this!
Such a crazy walk,,👌👏
Ir Withva . Double dd sounds the and f sounds v. Not bad for a Scot!?
Cheers!
railway gives people with a disability a chance to enjoy the mountain
Totally agree!
Kudos to you both... thanks for the journey up...and down and the amazing view from the summit. Brilliant. 🌍🏁
Hi guys, these are great videos (as always!), thank you so much for bringing us along! Your travel adventures are always fabulous fun to watch , keep up the amazing work 😀
Cycled up Snowdon more times than I’ve changed my underpants. Beautiful views. Glad you had a nice day for it …. Snowdon in cloud is like any other peak when you can’t see anything.
This was fantastic cinematography!! Thank you so much!!! Beautiful!
Hi Steve. Always enjoy your great videos, and this was no exception. Thanks and have a great week.
Cracking video many thanks 👏👏
Great climb Steve! That is some beautiful country to see. Thanks for the experience you did a fine job presenting it too.
truly stunning views thanks for the video.
I just love your content Steve you two are still my favourite CZcamsrs. Beautiful scenery and you always impress with how you film it. Thank you Steve ❤
Wow !! What a great video !! I know I will never do that but to be up at the top was amazing !!! Thank you both for bringing us there !!
That was stunning. I've done it a couple of times in the past but never on such a beautiful day, and I'm not fit enough now - thanks so much for taking us along!
Thnxs 4 getting down safe
Absolute beautiful picturesque sights.
Gorgeous views
People do turn round and abandon the ascent especially if you go up crib goch ......I once went up crib goch in the winter( when I was a teenager and invincible!!) Would not recommend it. Last year , the kids and I went up on the gentler slope and (at 54) it really killed me!
Great vid folks thanks.
Well done to you both, I really felt I was with you on this walk and felt for you going over rough terrain. Must admit the views were great.
Wow. I felt every breathless step. Well done. The views look beautiful 😊
So vvery evocative. Thanks for stiring many memories of much time spent around and on Snowdon. Have been through Rid Thoo a lot :D
Brilliant
Great video!
thanks for making the effort ,gorgeous views
Love the scenery.
Just had a chilled half-hour with a wee malt watching you both do the hard work😊. Great scenery and again it makes me want to see it for myself . Alicja is just so chilled and positive. Well done 👍
Beautiful hike, would love to do that. We have some beautiful mountains here in North Carolina, but nothing like that. Well done!!!!
Very well done you two. I used the train the other year but only got halfway because the weather changed. Stunning scenery and thanks for sharing your adventures
Thanks guys for reminding me of going that way to the summit when i was 14, it was 62 years ago in November. Dont think i could do it now so it would be the train.
Congratulations to you both such a great achievement
Amazing. Well done and thank you for the scenery.
Glad you enjoyed it Linda!
I have been busy last few weeks sorry I'm behind on your videos. Amazing job getting to the Top the View is Just stunning and Beautiful TY for Sharing with all of us.
Well done both of you. We did the Pyg track years ago. Agree coming down much harder. So enjoy your videos.
Beautiful video , thanks for the hard work up and down on that one. Can’t wait for the next one
Cheers Robert!
Great!
Great video Steve!
Well done and thanks very much.
Fantastic weather and priceless memories ❤
An absolute pleasure!
Did the climb up/down many years ago - we did different routes up/down, then had to walk right along the lake back to the car - big mistake - but once you've done it it never leaves you - mine was around 1970 ! We 'enjoyed' mistyness on the way down & feared getting lost, but somehow the path was always just visible thank goodness ! Love you Wales - been in the US for many years now so I really enjoyed this adventure with you guys - thank you !!!
No cell phones in those days either to tell the poor guys who stayed behind where we were - they were really scared for us - my husband & my daughter that is, who did not want to go with me & our 3 boys !
I can believe it! We were tempted with a different route down, but foresaw the walk back to the van and decided against it!
Wow, what a wonderful landscape. Thank you for making this trip and video. Although I tried several times to get to Wales I never made it so far. At least your video shows me that I won't be able to make it to the top of Mount Snowdon on foot. Not at my age.😊
Great video as always nice to see you have someone to carry the backpack and open the gates for you Steve 😅😂😂. The views were great,we were exhausted just watching you both and we were sitting at home. Look forward to the next one.
Wow...Cheers! (I would have been the guy in the village pub cheering you's on!)
Three into the series and they are getting better with each one. That was a great ride. Your filming really gives us a sense of the expanse of those moors. I was right as well, after having watched the last sub 2hr video and now this one, you are definitely fitting in more interesting and informative dialogue into these shorter rides.
Really enjoyable watching.
Thanks for this Steve, a gorgeous day (for us just watching!) - I've only been to the summit by train as my wife is disabled, so it was great to see this path up.
Thanks for my Sunday morning stroll❤
A pleasure Elaine!
A brilliant video thanks Steve. Such awesome views and what a beautiful day. Congratulations to you both for making it to the top.
Thanks so much Bryce! It was a wonderful day, helping by that weather for sure!
Thanks so much for doing that fantastic hike and showing us a part of Wales that we would never see. Great photography! You two ❤ are definitely the best travel vlogers!
Excellent. i remember climbing it 70 years ago, in heavy mist and pouring rain....not the same.
Sounds more like its normal cloak :)
Really enjoyed that, one of your best videos yet.
Really appreciate that Paul!
That ridge terrifies me!
stunning scenery Thank you Steve and partner for such a beautiful video
An absolute pleasure!
Not just the heat is bad, the air is a lot thinner up there !..WOW...too high for me thanks !! Great video Steve, as always. Can't wait for the follow..
Really enjoyed that one Steve. I first climbed Snowdon around 1978 and there were no film camera's etc back in those days to record it. However a guy I met at the summit had one of them new fangled Poloroid instamatic cameras and he used that to take a photo at the trig point. Cafe wasn't up to much either with teas and soup about all that was available.
Absolutely tremendous video. Superb as usual Steve, always look forward to them coming out. Very tough climb but stunning scenery.
It was worth all the sweat for that view!
A wonderful video Steve and Alicja absolutely fabulous....who needs trains haha ! Very well done
Well done guys. Thanks for another great video.
Cheers Richard!
Ooh, that brought back fond memories rom 2019 (before COVID Steve when my son and I did the summit the lazy way - by train. I loved watching you guys slogging it up the hard way and I take my hat off to you. Paul in Oz
Such an amazing day hike, so beautiful views..
Thanks to you both for your efforts.👋👌
An absolute pleasure! We loved this hike as it's not too difficult but the reward of views is just stunning!
Glorious video as usual from both of you.
Those mountain sheep!
Tough sheep those! :)
I am so pleased you made it! Congratulations; great views; thanks for sharing the Experience!
Thanks so much Louisa!
Absolutely glorious 😍
It really is, stunning!
Excellent video.
Spectacular views climbing up that mountain! The hike was definitely worth the effort! Well done!
Well said! Cheers for coming along :)
Just simply amazing
Absolutely stunning up there!
The best Steve and Alijcia combo in the world
My goodness this land is gorgeous! Much reminds me of the Isle of Skye with those mountain lakes …i would never for a moment consider wearing shorts in that very rough terrain a slip or fall would be horrible ! a serious walk with incredible vistas … thank you for sharing with us and taking us along …stay blessed
Lovely video in weather so uncommon in North Wales. Many decades ago on my first climb up Snowdon, by the dangerous route., the weather closed in so quickly that we dashed down what we thought was the direct route only to end up in Rhydd Dhu, so thank you for showing me what I missed in the clouds!
great vid both and well done
Thanks so much Allan!
Brilliant piece of work. Humour, jeopardy and lots of hard graft.
Awesome hike! I said WOW aloud several times and felt my heart catch on the sheer and shaley ridges. Thanks for taking us along. I want to strap on boots and head out in the morning. Still ice and snow on ground here but clear and blue forecast tomorrow. I loved seeing the wind cloud streaming over the ridge. Thanks you 2.
Excellent climb, glad you made it OK. That ridge and loose stones going downhill looked dodgy. But you got ideal weather for it. We once drove past the train station but the weather was no good for going up so missed out as I would have loved to take the train up. Happy you had a great holiday with Alicja.
😊😊👍👍Loved it thanks Steve & Alicia From Tommy Yorkshire
If you walk from the other side of the mountain the accent is only 2.5 hours although not in the heat. The PYG track is good as you start from Pen y Gent. The miners track is ok but a climb at the end, tough going. The Watkin path is an easy one but LONG. If I remember correctly four hours. The Llanberis path is the busy one and hard on the feet. I can’t eat welsh cakes without butter. Under here three hours is a good time, you should never rush. I have been on the top able to see your have out stretched but also when the air has been crystal clear. You can see for miles.
Excellent footage. About 60 years ago I peddled there on my cycle from Northampton staying at Youth Hostels.. 1/6 or 71/2p as it is now. Been up top 3 times but by train. Well done you two, a joy to take me with you. Thank you
Well done that was great
Thanks so much :)
