Post Office inquiry: Former boss Alan Cook speaks of regret

  • Former Post Office managing director Alan Cook said that an email suggesting “subbies with their hands in the till” were blaming Horizon is one he will “regret for the rest of my life”.
At the start of the inquiry hearing, Cook made an apology to sub-postmasters and their families. He told the inquiry on Friday: “I wonder … if I could just say before we get started, I’d like to put on record most strongly my personal apology and sympathies with all sub-postmasters their families and those affected by this.
More than 700 sub-postmasters were prosecuted by the government-owned organisation and handed criminal convictions between 1999 and 2015 as Fujitsu’s faulty Horizon system made it appear as though money was missing at their branches.
Hundreds of sub-postmasters are still awaiting compensation, despite the government having said that those who have had convictions quashed are eligible for £600,000 payouts.

I love how he chuckled while saying she didn’t probably want his apology. These people couldn’t be less sincere. It is astonishing they haven’t been sent down to criminal court and sued for damages directly. I’m sure he is living very well and has a great deal to answer for.

As it was sent as an email, which can be printed, that statement is libelous, if it were a comment spoken personally with no third party present it would be difficult to prove slanderous (a less serious offence). I once had someone banged to rights over an inappropriate email, it is libel. Why do people send such emails and leave themselves wide open to investigation?
Some people are not very bright!

If his pension was re-allocated to those sub postmasters who had lost everything then his apology would be more realistic.

Interesting how so often the questioning slowly reveals the true character of these individuals as the evidence of their actions and their thinking is revealed. How the same excuses of poor memory, misunderstanding of facts displays their ineptitude lack of knowledge and lack of responsibility of their positions as they attempt to spin reality but while doing so the hole they are digging for themselves gets bigger and bigger and bigger.

It's his level of professional disinterest which I found most disgusting. He wasn't properly informed because he had no interest in informing himself. A competent leader trusts their staff but ALWAYS takes their own steps to verify that what they're being told is true. He doesnt appear to have had any interest in fact finding, preferring to 'trust his instincts.' Cook is still lying to himself - and to the inquiry.

Our current govt has only one oppourtunity to get this enquiry and subsequent court cases right, one chance to prove to the British public that justice will prevail.
The post office is owned by the people "controlled" by our govt, the British public are watching Very closely..

I said it, I wrote it, at the time, but it doesn't reflect what I meant, definitely not, of course not, and I apologize unreservedly...And on and on it goes with these people, who didn't mean what they said or wrote at the time or, simply, conveniently, cannot remember what other people told or wrote to them. It's disgusting.
