I have ten pots with Clivia miniata. Inherited. I have had them for fifty years, they are about 100 years old. Beautiful blossoms.

Oh dear, hearing all these tips is making me realize how much I've abused my poor clivia 😂
The thing has been knocked out of its pot like 3 times by my cat. It had to be repotted and separated from the other clivia it had given seeds to and that grew with it. It's now sitting in a completely north facing window with 0 direct sun light and is watered whenever I remember to (like every 3 weeks, including the dormant phase I didn't know existed 😅). I have no plant skills whatsoever (shocker, I know) so I've literally just ripped out leaves I didn't like the look of.
Despite this it flowers beautifully at least twice a year, last time it got like 8 flowers at once. It's a trooper for sure.
(also if someone has tips on what to do when it gets droopy or yellow leaves, please let me know. Something tells me ripping them out of the ground by force isn't the optimal strategy 😂)

I'm in Minnesota. I have a HUGE pot (nearly wr inches across) full of these beauties. My family hates bringing it out in the spring and back inside in the fall. I have had it for over 25 years. I do water it in the winter. We have such drying heat for so many months that I give it about a gallon of water once a month. It sits in a southern facing window. When it goes back out in the spring, it gets whatever Mother Nature has to offer. I feed it in the Spring and it flowers around the first of July. I love it.
I wish I'd known about the dormant period without watering. I had a Clivia Miniata for several years, during which it bloomed twice. I rarely see one in a greenhouse & they are expensive. Mine was a gift from a friend, who divided hers.
From research I've done (lots of youtube videos) I learned that during their dormancy the temperature needs to go down to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. So, I leave mine outside in January and February, but bring them inside when temperatures drop below 50 degrees. I have three that I had for several years, then gave to my mom. They survived, but didn't flower much and when they did it was in the middle of summer. I got them back last year, repotted them into a chunky mix, gave them the dormancy period, and viola all three flowered! Mine have yellow flowers, and want to get my hands on an orange one $$$. There are clubs dedicated to them.

Thanks for the advice. I have 3 differents pots of Clivia, I will now plant them together. I have one that just started blooming after 4 years. I was starting to give up hope for a bloom, but I love the foliage.

This is so interesting and I appreciate the information, especially regarding dormancy. Someone in our neighborhood passes away and the family left 4 in one pot on the curb…it’s rebounded well but I wasn’t aware of the dormant period or that it likes to be root bound. I wanted to check about the grouping as I found it that way…now I know that it’s doing great and won’t mess with it too much 🪴

Thanks for this, this was really useful! I've been rehabbing my partner's grandma's 30+ year old clivia the past 6-7 months or so. Well, I repotted it and removed two of the plants that were so crooked they almost made the pot fall over. The roots look like paper straws that have been soaked in water after probably years of underwatering, but I didn't dare to cut them all off and several months later they still haven't rotted somehow. I also potted a pup into a separate pot, so I guess maybe I should pot it back in with mama. They're both growing new leaves at a steady pace through the winter (I had no idea about the dormant need, they've been in the livingroom with grow lights). Just hoping for some pups at some point to fill out the pot again :D

10:40 I have 2 clivias & one has a pup. The smaller one was separated from his parent. I was given the plant because I admired them at my local dry cleaners! Love them ❤

I bought a single plant from a grocery store one year. It was in full bloom with only a few leaves. I almost threw it out after the blooms were gone, but decided to just hold onto it. It took about 5 years, but it started blooming again! I have 2 babies growing beside it and one of the babies just bloomed. It's my most favorite plant!

Hi Tyler - Your video was so interesting. I have had my Clivia Miniata for about 3 years now and it usually flowers twice a year. Unfortunately this year I think that I have overwatered it and the tips of some of the leaves have gone brown. Where the new leaves form and the flowers grow it looks as if it has been eaten. The leaves have split and there are brown marks. I did not know that I had to stop watering it. I should be grateful if you would tell me anything I can do to save my plant - thanks.
I have 2 and they are both blooming now!! I did not know to leave them dormat😮

It's January, not Spring, and my plant has flowered. The flowers peaked out from the dense area between the leaves. But then they stopped. Now they are fading away.
I obtained this one from my Mom about 2 months ago. I have been keeping it on a side table in the foyer that has a mediocre temperature but there is a vent very close by and our heat is on too much and too often due to the build of our home and familial health issues.
The top of one leaf has been as slowly turning (a beautiful, but unwanted) yellow.
Sorry to knot you up, but right now, I only own one. I guess I should be obtaining more as per your suggestion.
And one more thing, I was wondering if we had the exact same plant as mine was definitely a fan shape. But now I see that it's starting to move in other directions.

Awe no, last year my Clivia had 4 pups and I noticed some rust on the main plant leaves which I cut off. I had no idea that I had to keep all the babies with the main plant 😔 I separated them and gave them to my family. A year on my Clivia has lost so many leaves… it just about hanging on and at the moment is flowering. Feeling very sad that I might have caused more harm than good!
4 pups though! Best to keep Clivia grouped together

Thanks for the video! I have a 41 year old Clivia that has only bloomed a handful of times. I now know to put the side babies in with it so I'll make that new change. I am in Illinois - I have heard you need the winter temps to be a certain range which you didn't mention at all. I struggle with my house being too cold -ie the garage or attic- or too hot - the house it self or even the basement is not in the 50's. Can you give advice on this?
They have a dormancy period which is critical to flowering. So, sounds like multiple things could be responsible. I leave all my plant water out for a few days before watering; so I water my plants with room temperature water if that helps.
Can these plants be planted outside? I live in 9B, pretty hot temps May/ October.
I have one of those plants and I love it is humongous. It's been a huge pot tons of leaves. It blooms once in awhile and it's awesome. I'd like to know what kind of liquid fertilization that I give it. Mine is close to 40 years old. And it's a gorgeous plant

I've had mine for over 20 years; it was a gift from my grandfather, who has since passed away. I've only seen it bloom once, the same year he gave it to me; hopefully, I can induce it to bloom this winter. As I wasn’t aware it requires a dormancy period. Wish me luck :)
Yellow clivia turned orange?
My plants bloomed beautiful but the last 2 yrs the bloom barely comes up😮 I see the color but stays down in the leaves
I’ve experienced that before! I’m not quite sure why. I do know that the one Clivia that did that stopped after a year or two.

Nobody can tell me why my 15 year old plus clivias will not flower. Even after I stored them in a refrigerator and kept them dry for two entire months this winter. Have followed all instructions I can get on the web, including cramping the roots in their pots. Just don't get it. Know what I am doing wrong?

I actually own about 15 mature Clivia and about 15-20 pups all are planted alone and doing great however I do love the look of five planted together
