- Time to get back to basics on welding. After teaching myself MIG badly, I wanted to get some proper hands on time with Dave and try out stick welding for around the farm and barns.

A high quality auto darkening mask makes learning so much easier. Rtech make a great value one
Was a great day as always Tim was a great student and it was fun thanks again Tim and Jo for having me up mig welding next 😂
Love the tee shirt ❤, from another noddy welder like Tim
Great work! Looks like you got the hang of it quite fast!
First if it is about the basics then you should never skip the arc striking part, also it is amazing that it is your first time and you don't stick the rod a bunch of times
Every day is a school day, you will get much work out of those lessons.
I have an R-TECH MIG180 and it is the best welder I have used, They are not the cheapest but if it goes wrong they have your back, You do get what you pay for.
It’s not just you who gets the ‘arc length’ shout over your shoulder…. I did the same to Dave when we were doing aluminium practice 😂
You made that look a lot easier than when I tried stick welding. The rod would just stick to the metal as soon as I got anywhere near it. It shows that having a good teacher is invaluable.
Love welding. Great video! I just wish I'd got my Dads skills, welding was his original trade! Top skills.
My pops was a pipeline/refinery welder. I wish he had passed his skills on to me, but he decided that he didn't want me to do that kind of work. I'm still handy with a MIG.
Love your work 👍
The hardest bit Tim is when you are on your own and you are either burning through or things are not sticking and you are not sure what is going wrong. I am a CZcams learnt occasional welders and get buy for BBQ small projects. Really enjoy the challenge apart from thin stuff which is a nightmare 😂
Believe me when the sparks start flying you don’t know what’s going on 😁
Practice all important. Before doing welding, do a test run in the shed to prove the kit and get your hand / eye alignment back in.
It’s a thumbs up from me 👍
If you find rods too long, then snip them in half, it's easier to use them, a tip I was taught 50 years ago by a old welder
Bending them to get better angles helpful too. 👍
Great t-shirt
We have the same arc welder and it is a good machine, it will overheat if you turn it up to 11 and weld too long, personally I’d say the rod wasn’t correctly sized to the material which was why it appeared to be too hot, that said some nice welds there!
It's 8mm plate 3.2 6013 is about right it was the rod composite just need way less amperage then it should of
@@pindustries8836 interesting, I could do with a few of those rods as our portable welder often needs to out perform its current rating,
Do you subscribe to the 40a/mm theory?
@@manx1641 I've hurd of various theory's over the years and it depends so much on machine rods and I think even power in has a part to play. But I've always welded by feel so usually 125 amps for 3.2 rods are my usual base amps then adjust according also joint configuration and thickness of material also effects heat plus travel speed. But if it was me I'd buy a ok brand of rod and do test runs and write down the amps and you then have a reference to what you need
👍👍👍👍👍
I have been looking at this brand for some time, it has good reviews for the cash ..... "Hovers over buy button" ! .....
Grinder and paint makes me the Welder I ain't 🤓
👍
word to the wise, ypu ned to put that 16A plug on properly... You should not ne able to see the individual cores and the black outer rubber must be clamped inside the plug. Pretty dangerous as it is!
It was a quick fix as I'd forgotten to advise Tim that perhaps the machine won't come with a plug so I cut on off some of my gear just to get him started I'm a welder not a spark but when it comes to plugs and stuff I usually buy new and use the correct tools
