Roy Buchanan - Down By the River (live, 1987)

  • Recorded live in New Haven, CT in August, 1987. Some of his last recorded work, this gig shows how he changed his approach during this period. Previously renown for turning his amp volume wide open and playing without pedals (ca. early thru the mid-70s), in this recording you can hear him (and the band) using different effects (e.g., delay, chorus) that were ubiquitous throughout 80s pop music. It's a jarring contrast for me (I preferred the style on "Live Stock") and I was hesitant to post this (as I am hesitant to post his version of Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" from this same gig: garish, over the top). But it's part of his catalogue and one for the archives.

Roy was one of the few guitar players who makes his sound with his fingers and not with pedals, Raw , soulfull and unique. He deserves more recognition from the public.

Had the good pleasure of seeing Roy play in Melbourne, Australia, in the mid-80s. I recall the place being so jam-packed with people that it was hard to breathe. And I kid you not, he tortured his Telecasters. For a blues guitarist he possessed an uncommonly ruthless style of playing. 🎸🔥

He had a unique way of playing raw and soulful. . I never heard his version of "Rock and Roll". I love anything he played because he was such a master player. This is different from his usual style yet haunting. Thank you so much for posting.

What a shame he left so early…..one of the greatest guitarists that ever played…..sad that he was so underrated and relatively unknown to most
This cut is new to me and excellent!

Roy gets my vote for best rock or blues guitarist I ever saw live, and I've seen some of the best. His live blues licks affected me unlike any other guitarist I have ever seen.

The description says their preference of his style based on Roy’s earlier catalog.
This might not have happened if Roy didn’t change his approach.
Sometimes the growth of others isn’t perceived the same.
No hate amongst Roy fans though!👍

Nope. Well, I can only vouch for myself, I suppose. This track is included among others purportedly recorded at the gig detailed above. There is some chatter between songs and it certainly sounds like RB.
