      @@maxpbeaumont Yes please! He is notorious for saying what's on his mind. Might I suggest a video compilation of interviews and one of radio messages when racing. Both of which you can find here on youtube.
      And if you're wondering about his skill, he's a hugely talented driver! Probably part of why he's so easy going about his career. He's never had to work really hard to be fast.

  • @rysmatias
    @rysmatias Před rokem +190

    you're absolutely right about your analysis about kimi! we mostly call him the iceman for giggles, and he was by far the one who rejected the fame the most; his answers are matter-of-fact and often didn't give much else in terms of insight - one time he was asked what happened during a race, and he said "bwoah, i spun" 😂 his personality is brilliant, we love him a lot and we miss having him around in the paddock.
    Edit: YES you're right again! Kimi didn't do f1 for the glory - he always said it was more like a hobby for him, and last year, right after his retirement announcement, he didn't show up to the next race 😂 the official reason was he caught covid, but it was pretty much an open secret that he just didn't want to bother with all the excess media attention on him because of his retirement... 😂 PLEASE do more kimi! he's actually a really kind man who has a great sense of humour (as great as finnish humour can be) and quite often even just one look at him can make you laugh... he's brilliant.

    This interview really shows why everyone loves Kimi. He doesn't give a sh*t but he's not rude or arrogant. He's calm and soft. If you bother him and ask him to do something he doesn't want, he's gonna let you know though. Some people only know him for this kind of "most famous moments" off the track, which is sad. This interviewer did a really good job because Kimi doesn't always look that confortable. He's kind of known for only speaking in extremely short sentences in public settings (or sometimes not even answering the questions). People I think Kimi looks confortable being around are Sebastian Vettel and Antonio Giovinazzi (both old teamates back in Ferrari). I think people who do not expect anything of him, treat him in the most normal way and let him be, then he'll come around and make jokes.

  • @magicofshootingstar5825
    @magicofshootingstar5825 Před rokem +92

    The name Iceman came right after he came in to f1.
    It has been speculated that the team principal who he had at the time wanted to protect Kimi. Kimi is softer than many think because of his nonchalantness. He is true family man (childhood family and his wife and kids are everything to him). He also is old school by not trusting contracts but a persons word. If you break his trust, you can't get it back either. So they called him Iceman to give him something to hide behind. Of course this cannot be proven but it makes sense. 🙂
    Also about projecting his voice: he had an accident as a kid which damaged his vocal cords and he never healed 100%. That's why no projecting and not making all the tones perfectly even in his mothertongue.

    • @maxpbeaumont
      @maxpbeaumont  Před rokem +23

    • @magicofshootingstar5825
      @magicofshootingstar5825 Před rokem +14

      Adding some stuff now that I had time to watch this to the end. 🙂
      Kimi cares about winning, about doing his best in car. He's motivated and was considered one of the best if not the best driver to develop car with mechanics. That's because he has incredible feeling of any machine he drives and ability to know what he's feeling and explain it to mechanics. He just hates the question of his motivation. And everyone interviewing him knows it, Will too. So it was almost a joke to ask about it at that point and he answers it with the same seriousness 😅😂
      You asked of his achievements: He is one time world champion and with a bit more luck (aka car reliability) he could have had at least one or two more titles to his name. He also is driver who has driven second most races ever in F1 and did that during 20 years.
      In the paddock he hated paddock politics and also media. But when he said something in driver briefings (=drivers have a meeting with race director before every race where they can raise issues) everyone listened.
      Oh and Kimi is Finnish. Finns typically don't do small talk or play social games and sometimes we might come out as rude to other people. That's because we don't say things we don't mean just to be considered polite, like "let's meet up sometime". We say what we mean or nothing at all. Kimi just takes it to another level 😄

    • @Rob2
      @Rob2 Před rokem +7

      @@ricky4129 Actually, the name iceman resulted from a race where there was a rain delay, everyone was walking around in the pitlane and paddock, and Kimi was seen with a can of coca cola and an icecream cone. That was noted as remarkable, as many would think a driver would not drink/eat such things.
      So from then he was called the iceman, although him appearing a bit cold is probably part of the reason, it was not the main reason.

    • @magicofshootingstar5825
      @magicofshootingstar5825 Před rokem +3

      Kimi himself has said in the interview that the name Iceman were on his helmet already from the first McLaren year 2002 and that it was Ron Dennis who invented it. The icecream race was only in 2009. That has increased the imago only, not made it.

He's a nice guy. And the interviewer Will Buxton has been in the business for a long time and is a really nice guy. Kimi is one of the most competitive drivers in F1 and a bold driver. He's also a funny guy.

    When it comes to his talent, Kimi is one of the best natural talents the sport has ever seen. He came to F1 with special license since he had only 23 open wheel races in his life.. These days the junior get that in a year or two. He graduated from karts to F1 in 2 years. His main problem was his attitude, he went racing and then partied the rest of time, and when he stop partying he was with his family. The fastest man on the planet in 2005, missed the championship because of car reliability. Took on Schumacher in his second season in a big team, lost by 2 points.. again because of car reliability.
    He values loyalty above other aspects in personal relationships, he has had the same group around him the entire time. Promises are kept, mans word is enough. Quite old school in that way.
    This epitomizes Kimi, from his younger days in karting: "Räikkönen's next Monaco race was also memorable; he was thrown on the wrong side of the safety fence in a first lap collision but continued driving until running out of road. Undeterred, he lifted his kart back onto the track and continued to race. His mechanic thought Räikkönen had retired, but he eventually caught up with the other competitors and finished third."

He goes his own way. I think he might be the opposite of what most Americans are like. Generally they say the more North you go in Europe, the more people are like this..haha!
    Her truly was at peace with quitting F1 and didn't feel sad or anything about it. He wanted to spend more time with his family and young children.
    In the car while racing he can get quite agitated and passionate though. But I think most fans think that's funny. He had the best board radios because of it. We miss that!

    I love clips like, "Stop telling me what to do! I know how to drive." Recorded during a race, Kimi barks at his race engineer basically telling him to shut up!
    These F1 videos have been great. If you're looking for more high-test personalities, you might look into MotoGP, which is the two-wheel equivalent to F1. There are a whole host of riders that ooze personality. Here is a short list of possibilities from the past ten (or so) years:
    Valentino Rossi
    Cal Crutchlow
    Marc Marquez
    Andrea Dovisioso
    Aleix Espargaro
    Pol Espargaro
    Dani Pedrosa
    And for sentimental reasons:
    Marco Simonceli
    Nicky Hayden

    kimi raikonnen is not my fav driver but definitely the most interesting f1 driver i've ever seen. while other drivers look super focused, super disciplined, n give all those smart answers, kimi was just being kimi. the idgaf attitude, really chilled out n never (at all) put an effort to try to be likeable on camera even though he's basically on live tv worldwide almost every week for around 20 years. i don't find that inspiring like hamilton but just amused n it really added kimi's own flavour in F1

    I wonder, as a communication skills coach, how much you have to adjust your analysis to take into account the culture, accent, different language pragmatics, social norms, etc (in this case, Finnish).

    Kimis voice is strange, because he hit his neck in a dirtbike accident when he was young and it damaged his vocal chords. But he also started to talk quite late..

    When he says he never had motivation he is being ironic. Can’t you see the smirk on his face? This was an inside joke because the reporters always ask him about it

  • @finnishculturalchannel

    Finns in general don't hype things. He's a F1 world champion. A smart funny focused guy. He loves driving and racing, but not the media and the rest of the circus. The reporters have a habit of putting words to people's mouths, asking silly questions and then writing whatever they feel like. Especially during his early career, the media and comedians made fun of voice and how he speaks. His vocal cords got injured when he fell with a bike when he was 5.

    He's from Finland. That has a lot to do with the way he is. There is no such thing as an awkward silence in Finland, rather the opposite. You say something when you have something worthwhile to say and that's it.
