  • 25k!!!!! Craziness! I'm so grateful for all of you, and I hope I can keep on growing and getting better and better! I hope you enjoyed meeting all of my banjos in a row. I know it was a bit of a long rambly video, but I just get so excited talking about my banjos and showing them off haha. If you particularly liked any of the banjos and want to see more of them in the future, let me know in the comments!
Bozma the gourd banjo was made by Jesse Head! If you want to check out his other work (he makes lots of cool gourd/wood instruments) and maybe get a banjo of your own, you can find him at his website jesseheadnaturalluthiership.com/ and follow him on instagram at / head_jesse
Bruce was made by Bruce Berry Banjos! Check out Bruce Berry Banjos at these links: website- bruceberrybanjos.wordpress.com/ youtube- www.youtube.com/ @bruceberrybanjos5757 instagram- / bruceberrybanjos
And the snazzy Zero Gravity Banjo strap is from Cable Free Guitar, who you can find here- www.cablefreeguitar.com/colle...
I got my panjo from Coal Mountain Panjo! Here's their website! coalmountainpanjo.myecrater.com/
I got Bixby from the Claremont Folk Music center! If you're in the area, you should check them out! www.folkmusiccenter.com/

"Banjo Joe" was made by the Harmony Co. in Chicago. They sold it with lots of different names on the headstock, but it was known as their "Reso-Tone" model, made from moulded Bakelite, an early form of plastic, very hard and brittle. I have one with the optional resonator back, also in Bakelite. I have softened the tone by using nylon strings, and I think it stands up very well in comparison with "grander" banjos. Thank you for the video - very entertaining, and good luck with your channel for the future.

On your first banjo, I took the liberty of taking a screen shot of the soundboard, did some research, and found out some stuff about it.
It's a low end banjo manufactured from Harmony parts with a REMO WeatherKing head. It was manufactured in Chicago, probably in the late 1960s or 1970s.

I had to chuckle at the socks in the head. I worked with an amazing banjo player back in the early 90's. He would occasionally slide an AA battery right behind his bridge and it would get a cool sound. I think ultimately we turned a cylindrical slug that would slide in a little better with his bridge. He always hand carved his bridges... I know there are a ton of mutes out there to experiment with, but something as simple as an AA battery can be fun.

With that kind of a pickup, I think you're also usually supposed to buy a special banjo-specific preamp, or use some sort of software on your computer together with it...the preamp for a pickup isn't just adjusting the level of the audio so it's at the desired input level for the amp, it often also takes the relatively raw string sound that you tend to get from a pickup and puts it through a mathematical model that matches how the body of a banjo (or a cello, or a guitar, etc.) colors that raw string sound.
At least I know that's needed for cello pickups, connecting raw string sounds from a cello pickup straight to an amp makes an incredibly annoying buzzing sound, I think because a cello string makes that sound, and it only sounds good after it's filtered through the body of a cello.
At least in the case of cello pickups, usually the maker of your pickup also sells a pre-amp that's meant to be used together with that pickup, that colors the sound in the appropriate way. I've always thought it would be cool if somebody made some software that would let you put your raw string sound through models of a variety of instruments, so you could try out what it would be like if you replaced the drum of your banjo with the body of a Stradivarius violin, or the sound board of a piano, or any number of different popular guitar bodies, but I'm not sure whether anybody's done that as a commercial software product not tied to specific hardware.
