- Take an epic road trip along the Richardson Highway to Valdez, Alaska. It is an unforgettable journey that offers breathtaking scenery and a true sense of adventure. Starting from the junction near Glennallen, the highway leads you south through some of the most picturesque landscapes Alaska has to offer. As you drive along this historic route, you’ll pass through vast forests, crystal-clear rivers, and towering mountain ranges. Each mile brings new and awe-inspiring vistas, making the journey as memorable as the destination.
We also took a side trip to Chitina, Alaska, nestled along the scenic Edgerton Highway. Chitina is a tiny village with a rich history and stunning natural beauty. Situated near Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, it serves as a gateway to one of the largest wilderness areas in the United States. Chitina was once a bustling hub during the heyday of copper mining, and remnants of this industrial past still dot the landscape. Today, it's a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering unparalleled opportunities for fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing amidst the rugged Alaskan wilderness. With its small-town charm and unparalleled access to nature, Chitina captures the essence of the Last Frontier.
One of the highlights of this trip is the ascent to Thompson Pass, a gateway to the coastal town of Valdez. Known for its heavy snowfall, Thompson Pass is often shrouded in a mystical fog, creating an ethereal atmosphere as you wind your way up the steep, curving roads. The pass, which reaches an elevation of 2,805 feet, offers panoramic views of the surrounding Chugach Mountains. During the winter months, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, attracting snow sports enthusiasts from around the world. In the summer, vibrant wildflowers blanket the meadows, adding bursts of color to the rugged landscape.
As you descend from Thompson Pass, the road meanders through lush valleys and alongside glacial streams, eventually leading you to the shores of Prince William Sound and the town of Valdez. The dramatic approach to Valdez is marked by towering waterfalls cascading down the cliffs, most notably the stunning Bridal Veil Falls and Horsetail Falls, which can be seen right from the highway.
