2023 Suzuki Swift Review: the most underrated small car?

- The Suzuki Swift is now in its third generation. And while it might not compete with the likes of the Vauxhall Corsa when it comes to sales, we still rate it as a thoroughly likeable - and highly recommendable - small car. Even more so now that Suzuki has launched its Service Activated Warranty, which tops up the manufacturer warranty to seven years and 100,000 miles provided you have the car serviced within the Suzuki dealer network.
A lot of what's great about the Swift comes down to its low kerb weight. This is a small car that weighs under 1,000kg, which is almost unheard of in 2023. And so while it makes do with just 82bhp from it's 1.2-litre petrol engine, it actually feels more sprightly than you might expect, and is also capable of delivering 55mpg or more.

A stylish and thoroughly well-engineered little hatchback, the Suzuki Swift offers good value for money, strong standard kit count (even at the lower reaches of the model range) and fun and engaging handling. The performance-oriented Swift Sport Hybrid in particular is really entertaining to drive. What’s more, the Swift is a tough car that will prove dependable over time, while Suzuki itself has a good reputation for putting right any reliability issues that do arise quickly and efficiently.
The one area where caution is advised concerns insurance costs. The Swift sits in relatively high insurance groups regardless of specification, meaning potential buyers should do some homework before committing to buying one. That one point aside, the Swift is a very likeable, reliable and well-equipped little hatchback that should prove to be a joy both to drive and own.

The hard plastic is not as hard as the plastic on my Fiat 500 (2017). Interior is lovely.

These are one of the best small cars on the market and if you are looking for a small car and don't have one on your shopping list then you must be stupid. They are very reliable, cheap to service and great fun to drive. They are much cheaper to buy and will be more reliable than the VW and Stellantis small cars. Ignore the slightly cheap interior (it won't fall apart) and you will have a great dependable small car.

Hi Chris, well to start with I think the Swift is a fun darty little car. I ❤ IT. I use to own the previous generation, very capable around bends, great turning circle and I did not mind the hard plastic, with that being said I wouldn't mind owning the new one. It really does hang on in the bends for dear life and it's as if it encourages you to keep going. It is that grippy. If your the sort of person that does not need to move big heavy items often and you just need a reliable fun to drive car, this car is for you.

I am 6 foot 7 and this car has space. Sadly mine was totaled and I am in the process of getting a new car. I told persons that I would take the same car in a heart beat but everyone is saying because I am tall I should go for a bigger car. A bigger car doesn't mean more space for me to be honest.

I am 6'2". If I adjust front seat to my height and I sit in the rear seat my knees almost touch the back of the front seat.
Nice one Chris. I do feel for the health of the Car Guru team at times, the camera bods that have to hang onto the bonnet/stick to the doors/ hang off the roof etc to get the best shots not to mention nearly getting run over. Joking aside the Swift looks like a decent honest car that can still put a smile on the face of an enthusiastic driver and this is becoming increasingly rare. I like it. Many thanks for sharing. As / when I decide to downsize my car Suzuki are already on the test drive list amongst others.

I got my GL CVT yesterday. It's a beautiful and refined car. Really impressed, very smooth and have no power issues driven sensibly. Reviews of this car are a bit harsh. The interior is cool. Great car

When I got my first new car, I was only interested in a fun small car. I looked at this, the up, a Mazda 2 and the fiesta. Ford bribed me the most and I don't regret the decision one little bit. If Suzuki had tried a bit harder, I think I'd have enjoyed having a swift.
I drove the 1.0T, with the CVT gearbox. It was a heap of fun, in the hammering rain, very quick on some hilly bendy roads in the Waikato NZ. And the triple sounds great when you wind it out. Great wee car.

The now discontinued 1.0ltr turbo was a waaay better engine.
We have that engine in our swift in SZ5 trim and it feels a-lot quicker, we had the 1.2n/a SZT for a day while it was in for a service and it just felt sluggish in comparison even with the hybrid system. 0-60 claimed on the 1.0ltr is about 10.5 seconds in reality it’s around 9.5 as we tested this out accurately slowest result was 9.9 seconds.
Couple things I noticed though was the gearbox feels a-lot tighter on the updated cars the clutch pedal is also alot shallower which felt more comfortable. Overall the 1.0ltr though was better on fuel with mixed driving than the 1.2.

I wouldn't bother. Not cause there's anything wrong with it at all. But a brand new version is on the horizon.
I have just bought a new Swift. and the interior is positively luxurious compared to my previous car, a Peugeot 108. I am running the car in, and getting 61 mpg! It is a lovely car all round, and I can see me keeping it for a long time, like I did with my 1990 Swift, which went round the clock with no issues!

Any small car is good these days. I can't even fit a Ford Focus in my garage, yet the only small cars available in my country are the Fabia, Polo, Mini and Swift.

idk in the uk, but these are at least 25k AUD here in Australia (£12k) so this car is also far from cheap either.

When this car came out in about 2017 it had more power options and I'm sure it had about 110 bhp. Also the Sport had 150 bhp when it first came out but was de-tuned too.
Yep they had a 1.0 turbo engine option, I have one and it's superb, little pocket rocket as iv had it tuned to 130bhp
I have a JDM swift with 1.0 turbo with features like 4 way camera. Much more fun than the 1.2 available in uk .
2017 swift had the 1.0 turbo in the UK
Africa is really suffering; this is being sold in South Africa and the differences are so noticeable.
No rear brake discs in SA -We have only Infront
No LED headlights in SA-We have halogen lamps.
Only 2 air bags in SA-s 6 in the UK

Safety is really compromised in our market but yet again, the other markets are much richer and stricter than us when it comes to safety.
The rear breaks are not available for the confort cvt neither in DE, but it is better: for small car like this they work better and cost less.

I have the Baleno. It is basically this car with 2 more inches of leg room at the back and a bit bigger boot. Great little car, I'm really sad they sold the model to Toyota and one cannot buy a new Baleno in Europe. After driving it for 6 years I can definitely recommend, even as a 2nd hade purchase. Outside of the city I get 65 mpg (UK). TBH I'm not driving fast, maybe 55-60 mph. In the city I get 50 mpg (UK). The only problems so far are things like the plastics inside get decolouration on places when I rub my elbows and... that's it, really. In 6 years never had a breakdown.
Great review Chris. Its my first car , and it is THE second most selling car in INDIA. It's perfect for an economical middle class family and best suited for country roads and quick manueverability in densely populated roads like India , with poor road infrastructure. Although a comfortable ride on highways to , but the downside of it being not so high on safety ratings. Thanks for making me proud of my car.
They start at16k for that you get an szL in the uk and i am on my second one and get 65mpg on a run and around town a good small car for what you pay.
I never go aroudn tapping a car door mate, nor straching them either.
Got the previous model for 10 years. A lot of breakdowns but nothing’s serious.

- overall body squeak and rattle
Engine K14B gasoline with simple traditional 4AT transmission. No issue at all with engine and trans.
So far happy with this model. Cheap to run and maintained. Perfect for everyday driving.
The previous model was built in Hungary. This model is made in Japan so better built.

Bought the SZL recently and thus far am fairly impressed it can do 60mpg on my commute which is 1/3 motorway and it revs at 3K at the limit which is fine for a small car. Downsides as speed builds there's quite a lot of road noise from the tyres changing brand/ type might help with that. Other than that for a base car it's missing very little kit ok a heated wheel is on my wish list maybe 2024 model?
It's a bit gutless at higher speeds but it's a small car with a small engine plus side loads of room under the bonnet. For the price on a tierv1 discount NHS etc under £14k bargain😂

Official 0-62 time is 12.1 seconds, not 13.1. It's still a fun car though. Just bought the last Gen 3 SZ5 my dealer had. Only Gen 4 cars coming now.

I had the 3 cyl 1ltr turbo, soft hybrid.
I had it for 4 years, just swapped it for a 21 plate Mini Cooper.
The 19 plate Swift I had was the most economical petrol car I've ever owned & believe me, I've had loads of small economical cars over the years.
It was far more fuel frugal than the Mini I now own.
Last year on holiday in the UK I was achieving 66mpg!
That's outstanding.
I regularly got 55mpg out of it.
My Mini?
Well, I haven't got a combined of 50mpg out of it yet.
Suzuki jive loads of high tech adons as well, including High beam assist.
But oddly, the Swift didn't have Auto Wipers on it which was laughable I though, although my Swift was the top model.
Auto Wipers have been around for decades on cars.
Couple of things I didn't like about the Swift.
The body style is rather 'old farty' maybe to appeal to Pensioners.
No Street Cred for young drivers.
Also, what Suzuki give in high tech extras they save on quite basic & dowdy interiors.
The interiors are pretty cheap looking.
