Homelessness is the most important issue in Toronto now. Name changing is not going to change history…or make our lives better
Tell your government to solve it
@@Lil_Elegant How? When they are the problem!
When bringing Ukrainian by plane in Canada, homelessness is not a problem, housing is not one , spending 9 billion on war is not problem, but may forbid that's something is associated with Black the people you love and were raised to hate then your true character will come out . Who raised you? Lineage of evil
The devilish animals just have to hear Black , then you'll know who and how they upbringing come to be . > . What these people got in the hearts is what the give . This is how the parents raised them to be

When I lived there, I use to take the train to that spot. Canada has changed from how it use to be in the late 80,s. Payment is due.
Toronto doesn’t deserve to use the term “Sankofa” …that is ridiculous.
Yep. It's an insult.
Is about time how many western names we have in Africa Ig Victoria falls Victoria park and more
And the Indian Ocean to the African Ocean.
@@BeeBee-wu1fz I definitely supports that name change. We need to start a movement to make it happen.
Well who fault is that?? Change it back to african names. This is all b.s symbolism. So no its not 'about time'. Smh..

For millions of dollars they could open a new shelter in Toronto. This is ridiculous
I'm Ghanaian and I agree with them, they are not from Ghana, and they should use names of their own culture that represents THEM
Henry Dundas is heavily associated with slavery in the british empire which is why the renaming comity suggested they choose a word in an African language to rename it.
Totally Nonsense,
that's great to hear, and its a great choice of name. SANKOFA means “to retrieve". And for those who think its a wrong choice to choose an African related name for place in Canada, just think of all those place in Africa and the Caribbean that are named by Europeans, that honours European locations and their own heroes.
Exactly Victoria falls in Africa after Queen Victoria.
They also have to change the british descents name: i.e McDonald to Kwame, Lord Austin to Akwaba, Larkin to Mensah
Why does Canada have to change everything to African names? Get over yourself....Canada owes you nothing!
Reparations is the goal . We need bi weekly checks for the rest of our lives . My bank account is ready to receive. God bless Africa , all diasporans and anyone whose lineage is traced back to the motherland
NO, anyone who's ancestors were victims of enslavement. Because they stole our identity, Black indigenous enslaved people also included. We're not going for incremental payouts.
Exactly. All this name change it's all distraction symbolic b.s. Cutt the check!
Get a job you broke ass loser... as a black person in canada you do not deserve reparations! This isn't the states
Just to add some context. The city of Toronto passed a vote to rename Dundas Street and other city-owned areas named after Henry Dundas.
Henry Dundas extended slavery in the British Empire and wasn't even Canadian and never ever set foot on Canadian soil there's been a movement for a very long time to get his stuff renamed.
So because of his connection to slavery that's why the proposal to rename young Dundas Square was to choose an African name.
Exactly, more symbolic gestures, cut the check!
So many fools happy of a renaming this shows how easy you can just be sold into a idea of acceptance… delineation FBA
What has Canada got to do with FBA?

Question is if they where changing that name to another European name, would it ve been an issue?
From 🇬🇭 and i dont like this at all its all a delibrate attempt to pretend like they like us ☹😩
It would be sadly ironic if Rental Properties in Toronto forced Ghanians to stay in Scarborough & Outer Suburbs.

Hardest part for them against reparations is getting started!
This is old news, like 3 weeks ago.
Ooooh… now I get why the president of Ghana is flip flopping. 😂
Who chose the name?
Every step toward praising freedom to the suppressed is welcomed. No matter what you change the name to will have a cost so might as well change it to Sankofa. Freedom Square or Inclusion Square may be less controversial but they are all good. I personally like Ashanti Square better but the more inclusive names are better.
Put me down as a "no" for this one.
Canada should change the name to something Canadian.
Why would they change the name to something outside their country?
And Africa needs to get its own naming rights back.
Trudeau is playing more mind games.

For what?
Toronto changing the name to a Ghanaian name makes as much sense as Ghana changing the name of some high profile location to a Canadian name. Again, its Toronto's right and subsequently their decision. Why do we never hear about reparations from the Africans that captured and sold other Africans into slavery? Didn't they help create the problem?
You are comparing apples with oranges. The name-change is appropriate because of the meaning of the word. They could have taken any name that has a similar message, it does not matter which part of the world it came from. As for slavery, most civilizations/ethnicities took "spoils of war" and did whatever they wanted with them so slavery has been in existence since the dawn of man. It is not right but it is widespread.
@Asalix2. Exactly, so why wouldn't Toronto change the name to an acknowledged Canadian hero, Wolfe, for example? Is there a site in a major Ghanaian city named after a Canadian?
As you say slavery was widespread and still exists in some parts of the world (remember the Nigerian school girls).
Why not either expand reparations demands to everywhere it existed and everyone that benefitted from it or accept it as history and move on from where we're at?
The boats used to transport enslaved ppl were not made in AFRICA or by Africans. The sailors were also not African nor were the “explorers”. The people who LEFT THEIR CONTINENT In search of riches were NOT Africans, The people who left in search of “things to buy” were NOT Africans, if you captured the warriors of an opposing group they surrendered & became your prisoners, every country on Earth was & is doing that. It’s not an African thing, It happened in WW1/2 u wouldn’t think twice about sending them away or killing the opposition to prove a point. To say Africans started slave trade is a damaging and disgusting deflection from the atrocities of the transatlantic slave trade. So I say The people who started it are the people who left their homeland with nothing and came back with EVERYTHING
@@donaldmaxie5264 There are many streets in Canada named after Canadian heroes. The reason Sankofa makes sense is because Dundas blocked the abolition of slavery for 15 years! He was one of the biggest advocates for the enslavement of Africans. It actually makes the most sense that the name has roots in a place that was vastly affected by that very same atrocity.
@@MRPhoto_Digital Don't think anyone is saying Africans originated slavery. The practice of slavery is so old that it's origin is lost in the mists of time. There are historical records that provide evidence Vikings selling slaves from Europe to Arabs. Slavery was widespread in parts of Europe and the Arabian states. Slaves came from everywhere. Just as a side note the Arabs preferred females for their harems, males were castrated (many didn't survive) so they didn't mess around in the harem.
This was also long before the Americas were discovered.
Reparations
For what?
But Ghana was involved in the slave trade, make that make sense
