‘Every second is intense’ - Natalia Osipova on Anastasia (The Royal Ballet)

- Kenneth MacMillan created the one-act ballet Anastasia for Deutsche Oper Ballet in 1967. He was inspired by the true story of Anna Anderson. Find out more: www.roh.org.uk/productions/ana...
Anderson was a woman who believed herself to be Anastasia, youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and the only survivor from the assassination of the Romanovs in 1918. Leaving the audience to decide the legitimacy of Anna’s claims, MacMillan created a haunting, expressionist work to Martinů’s Sixth Symphony, in which Anna is visited by confused nightmares of her life from the time of the massacre to her discovery in Berlin in 1920. The ballet won widespread acclaim on its premiere, particularly for the central performance of Lynn Seymour in the anguished title role. As MacMillan said in 1971, ‘I found in [Anna’s] story a theme that has sometimes appeared in my work before: the Outsider figure. Anastasia seems to me to be a supreme example of this’.

Natalia’s ability to tell a story with her entire being is absolutely unparalleled in the ballet world. I think even professional actors could learn a lot from her. Truly a remarkable artist & performer.
I watched this ballet last nigh. While enjoyed the first 2 acts, the third act it was breathtaking and left me literally shaking! For me Natalia gave the very best acting through dance I have ever seen! Of course, though I usually don’t like to watch Ballet on a TV screen, seeing her facial expressions, especially her eyes, close up really showed that she is as magnificent an actress as a dancer!
Aye I made the mistake if watching it at night and I couldn't sleep afterwards
Antalya Osipova is great in expressive rolls. Did you see her as Giselle performing the mad scene with Carlos Acosta. She is amazing.
If i had millions right now i would take a plane and buy tickets to this show anywhere in the world. Natalia is amazing!
INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE by the entire Royal Ballet company! Natalia Osipova nailed it!!
Such an amazing dancer. No words.
I want to see this show so badly! I wanted to see it in theaters but I had no way of getting there! it looks so beautiful
I love how Natalia still refuses to speak in English, she is the queen
Oh I thought she couldn't speak Eng...
@@hatakashi1900 She actually can speak English on a basic level. In fact, she has an English boyfriend now. It is just easier for her to express herself in Russian.
Marianela debería hacerlo también:(
It's easier to express yourself in your native language, I think she speaks in russian because of this.
She now speaks English when she's interviewed. She's started doing so recently.
I really wish I could watch this
The production was broadcast live to cinemas around the world on 2 November 2016, and over the next few weeks a number of cinemas will show the ballet again as an encore. You can find participating cinemas here www.roh.org.uk/showings/anastasia-live-2016

Hi Haley. Anastasia was broadcast live to cinemas on 2 November 2016. Many cinemas are also showing encore performances over the next few months - you can find cinemas near you here www.roh.org.uk/showings/anastasia-live-2016
Any chance it'll get a DVD release??
Should it be 'Osipova' in the video title instead??
Many thanks Beth for spotting that typo - corrected now.
Wow
Natalyja is a fantastic balerina. Honest expressive ❤❤❤❤❤
great
2:37 I love her.
“Never played someone crazy…” are we forgetting Giselle?
I wish that i want to be like she😍
great thumbnail
Simon Hewett looks like Anthony Dowell
what about Laura Morera? Wasn't she supposed to play Anastasia?
There were three casts for Anastasia, featuring Lauren Cuthbertson, Laura Morera and Natalia Osipova in the title role. The Osipova cast was broadcast in cinemas.
Teo Teutza how can you complain when Osipova is on your screen?
Does she wear false insteps? They're always bulging up in a way that's looks enhanced, but then again she may just have impossibly good feet.
Didn't anastasia die as a child?
Yes she sadly did. They were taken to a basement ( all the family )and they first shot the father, the mother , her little brother Alexis (because he was heir to the throne) and then procedeed to kill Olga,Tatiana ,the other sister and Anastasia was the very last one to be killed
With a gun
@@NOONE-cd4gu and on top of that, if the gun wounds didnt kill them, the shooters went around stabbing them until they died.. very sad actually..
@@ashtynthelen6065 i dont know about the stabbing part but i think that because they had made vests out of the imperial jewels those vests were actually bullet broof so the officiers had to shoot them several times because the hard big jewels like diamonds and other stuff were protecting them. Anastasia was the last one to be killed. I believe they shot her in her forehead🥺. When i listen to the haunting melody of once upon a december its like im hearing all the family ghosts crying together in a sick melancholy of despair
@@ashtynthelen6065 if u havent check oit this insteumental versions of the song
They are so beautifully haunting. Its the moment you realise the song "Once Upon a December" doesnt need words to feel you with sadness

@NOONE-cd4gu they had sewn jewels into their corsets as no one would check their corsets and hoped that if they'd escaped, they could use the jewels as money.
The story has nothing in common with the real history. Shame on the authors.
Похоже, и Наталья не сильна в этой теме...
It's definitely a very challenging role for a ballerina, but not as interesting for the audience. This role has lost it's validity since we know that Anna wasn't Anastasia Romanov. She couldn't have had this vivid memories simply because she hasn't lived this life.
Annabella Escobar
I beg to differ. I think that historical roles still hold up, even when they are proved false. Richard III is an excellent example. It is generally accepted that he wasn't even half as evil as Shakespeare portrayed him, and he didn't have the hunchback.
Does it make the role of Richard any less interesting? No.
And even, in this case, makes it even more powerful and condensed as a piece about identity: borrowed memories, fantasies, learnings etc slowly becoming your past self, suffering for something, someone that wasn't even you..
It's not a documentary which value is related to being true to the facts. It's a piece of art, consider this a staged novel, which is open to imagination.
