I've been playing piano in church for at least 20years. I served in two churches for free between 2001 to 2013 till i relocated to Abuja in 2013 and took up a 30k monthly offer and 200k one bedroom for four instrumentalists in Lugbe zone 8, Abuja. We devoted ourselves to doing other extra services like setting up and unpacking equipment for the church since we used a hotel venue and all the members were rich people who would drive their big cars home once service was over, just to cut down expenditures of having to hire other people to set up and unpack. On Saturdays we could get home at midnight, sometimes 2am of Sunday morning if our hotel venue was busy till late, of course we still had to set up as we had a lot of equipment, church was doing well financially. Later in 2016 I got university admission and opt for a church that didn't require much time so I can cope with school in Minna. So I would travel to Abuja every weekend, go play in church and return back to Minna and continue school, sometimes I would be on the road twice a week. One Weekend I had a terrible accident on my way to school, that weekend I still travelled to Abuja, limped to church and still played. I pay for accommodation both in Minna and Abuja from my 30k monthly salary as I don't have any accommodation allowance. I have travelled Nigeria widely on music, missionary, crusade and ministerial duties. Funny enough there are other church musicians are doing worse off. 99% pastors don't know where their musicians live, whether those on salary or volunteer, most church musicians in big cities like Abuja and Lagos live in slums, that's where they can afford, some even squat for ages. You can't find up to 4% of churches that pay their musicians up to 100k monthly, not even graduates as most church musicians in big cities are graduates, the churches wouldn't even help them get jobs either. Forget the big suits that are amplified by LED stage lights, na we patronise okrika pass. Most of us are gradually leaving for other professions and might not have all the time rehearsing or scoring new songs any more. Worse off pastors won't allow their daughters marry their 30k monthly salary skillful musicians. If you know any church musician who doesn't have any other job, please sit them down and ask how they cope in all sincerity, you will be shocked. Most of them resort to kabu kabu now, man must survive. This space won't allow me say much though. The best thing you can do for your church musicians is help them get a flexible, well paying job if you can't afford to pay them well.

I can talk about the problem and sympathize with you(which I do) but that won't help much. What you need is to understand the concept of purpose. You need to know where you are and why you are there(the concept of time and season) only then can you fulfill that purpose. Please know you deserve to be successful; don't matter if it is a career, business, or service to God. Prayerfully set your life goals (aligned with your purpose) and design a plan on how to achieve this. Everything will begin to work together to get you to where you need to be. May God be with you 🙏

This is deep o.most churches don't value their own and to pay their instrumentalist is always a big issues in churches. I remember how i will go to sing in other churches but my pastor didn't like it he stopped me from going asking me to focus on the choir .this is me a student who was very committed but for once he didn't ask me how I get transport to church almost everyday .

I learnt how to play drums in 95 and 96,I was already a professional,,abundantl life parish, ota,,,,we never got paid a dime,our choir was so dope that we had to record an album,we did night vigil prayers and rehearsals,,,I was also a worker in the church,,,,RCCG,,,our choir played frequently at the government house at abeokuta, Ogun state,,,after I went to high school,,I was surprised to hear instrumentalist collect up to 60k a montj,things and times have changed, playing instruments os not a joke and artist who play instruments should be appreciated and cared for,,,I was always taken care of by the then pastor peter Ameinkhenan, a great man,,,
