I Restored This 2$ Ebay Junk Game Boy Color - Retro Console Restoration & Repair
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 02. 2020
- After a while of searching I was able to find bad enough Game Boy for my restoration videos only for $2. Usually I have to pay a little extra for the worst items. The console was sold as junk and for spares but pretty much everything except the speaker is broken. The mother board doesn’t power on. The shell is badly yellowed. Stickers are in terrible condition and the screen is badly burned. I will try to restore this fully rather than use it as spares for easier projects because I’d still have to fix most of the parts. The Gameboy T-shirt is no longer available. It was limited time only.
I started the restoration by trying to get the power on. First I tried to clean corroded the contacts but that was no use. The power switch was working fine which meant the board was bad. Luckily I was able to find the broken part with a second GB color I have. The connection from one battery terminal had broken quite near the terminal I soldered a wire between the spots that were supposed to have a connection and it worked. This might not always work because it might leave something out of the circuit.
The corroded terminal was hard to clean while it was on the board so I desoldered it and removed the corrosion with rust remover, after which it was plated with nickel. Nickel will protect it from corrosion to certain extent. Nickel plating tutorial: • How to make simple DIY...
Now that I had power I could fix the screen. To fix “screen burn” I need to remove the burn polarizing filter and replace It with a new one. A sharp blade can be used to get the start but after that the filter will peel off by hand. Some of the glue will stay on the screen. I removed it with Isopropyl alcohol. All glue must be removed or the new polarizing filter will have bubbles. When putting a new polarizing filter on one must figure out which way the polarizing filter works best on the screen. It will only work at a certain angle.
I also removed the yellowing from the plastic shell which was supposed to be colorless. For this I used the same retrobrighting method as always. H2O2 and UV-light. Full tutorial here: • How to remove yellowin...

The one thing I've learned: Isopropyl alcohol cleans everything
Is does though.
no, brake cleaner cleans everything, and its way cheaper
@@deadprivacy thats my go to recipe frankly
@Sagess Aries wd40 with its 40 applications usually is better but also more expensive, then again in this case i would say no, the silicon will form a film closing in dirt in scratches in the plastic, the joke about isopropyl alcohol especially the one he is using is that it say universal reiniger , reiniger being dutch for cleaner, so sure its even branded as universal cleaner
If you ever encounter something that isn't cleanable with isopropyl, try sulfuric acid. Not only does it clean everything, it also (di)solves most other problems.
The day he gets an electric toothbrush, he's going to be unstoppable.
Was just going to comment this. Seriously
True
Really so many like but like barely any comments

As a child who was given a GBC as his first gaming console that didn't need to be shared with his parents...
...the condition this was in hurts my soul.
Definitely going to give a few of these restoration techniques a shot once I'm back state side!
odd tinkering: “I will clean the board with isopropyl alcohol before fixing the issue”
me, nodding along like i have any idea what he’s doing: “of course”
No one decides to reply
Good
It's just rubbing alcohol
I was exactly there when i saw this lol
Isopropyl alcohol is a cleaning agent like water. However, unlike water, the negative dipole is concentrated on a sterically hindered oxygen by two methyl groups and a proton. With water, the oxygen has the second energy level valence electrons exposed with a strong negative dipole. The stronger dipole makes water more likely to form highly charged ions. Therefore, when isopropyl alcohol contacts a semi-conductor (such as silicon dioxide) there is not enough of a charge to cause a short circuit. However, with water there is.
Basically, isopropyl alcohol is a cleaning agent that won't destroy computer boards. It's like cleaning a table with water.

Hearing that old music boot up on the console after the tender, love, and care you put back into it, brought a tear to my eye, and put a smile on my face. All of the memories came flooding back of the times I played my color and advance sp, and how much time has passed since. I'm turning 28 in July, and I got a tickle of the joy that era of gaming brought me (which was a fraction of the joy this lad, the original owner, probably had). Randomly came upon this video in my feed, and I'm glad I did. Hope this unit is happy with its new owner now, and thanks for what you do!
This is absolutely awesome. I find myself respecting this person very very highly. Patience, craft, skill, fun.

I have had to "fix" my grandma's "broke" computer a few times. It's always just running slow and I just open it, clear the dust out, then make sure there's nothing on the computer that may slow it down. Works every time
This is how I've always acquired so many of my electronics. lol
I used to fix computers that had hardware issues. You’d be shocked how many people buy new computers when all that was broken was a $60 problem. Power supply’s go out etc. (on button won’t do anything) simple stuff like that. Or dust would get the fans so clogged they wouldn’t spin and the computer would overheat.
God forbid you mistake that tooth brush for your own
Adds a nice aftertaste
ah hell nah 💀
Wait you're not supposed to use the same tooth brush... uh oh.
I'm willing to bet the person who used to own this GBC was glad this person repaired it back to it's full capacity. In fact, I'm also glad because neither my brothers nor I don't know how we repaired our green GBC. The only problem was the buttons, but even we don't have the parts nor tools for it as well.
The most surprising thing about this entire video is the fact the battery door was still with it.
I can agree 😂 when I was a kid my parents would have to tape the battery door to remotes and stuff so they wouldn’t get lost, or they were broken and that’s the only way they would stay on.

But this, this right here. We need more videos like this. People taking already trashed items and make them new again. We really need more people who are more ingenious about their intentions in content creators.

I have the exact same gameboy and it's over 20 years old. This particular color wasn't only sold in Japan, since we're from germany. Anyways I had forgotten some years ago the batteries inside and they did a huge damage on the inside, it was horrible. It got fixed though and still works. You can still see some of the corossion or slightly yellowness on the white board from the inside, from the damage that had been cause, but it's minimal. The batteries had practically melted and gone almost everywhere. So glad it got fixed.
