Making A Jewellery Box - With Compound Mitre Angle Cuts

- In this video I make some jewellery boxes using wood from an old reclaimed fireplace surround. I think the wood might be meranti but I'm not sure. This project was my first time cutting compound mitre cuts at the mitre saw - something that I've wanted to try for a while and it seemed like the perfect simple woodworking project to try it out on.

Now that you are moving to a larger shop I sure hope you remain true to form and stay with what works for your viewers. So many content creators get too big for their britches and I lose interest and move on to a new start up creator. The reason I have been with you from the beginning is that you make reclaimed wood projects mainly, which is what I do. Please keep up the good work and awesome content that only a tiny workshop on a limited budget can create.
This is a bit of a ridiculous comment to make really. If I made the same type of project video every week, I’d get very bored, as I’m sure you would too. Progression is natural and wishing for someone not to progress in life isn’t very helpful, or nice. I’m sure you didn’t mean it in a negative way but I really can’t find a positive from a comment like this 🤷♂️
There is an endless supply of new makers out there, something for everyone. I don’t really dig what Jimmy Diresta is up to nowadays but I don’t comment and tell him to go back to his NY workshop - I just choose not to watch some of his recent videos and watch others instead - I’m still a big fan of his though

Very interesting boxes and a great job of making them. As it happens I am making a Meranti jewellery / trinket box for my granddaughter, but with boring straight sides and dovetails. You will have to bite the bullet and try flocking. Well done Keith.

I've made countless "frames" like you to glue on the lids. I, however, assemble the frames first to make sure I have a good fit with the box as opposed to gluing on the line you drew on the box lid. Then I'll glue this frame on the roughly cut lid. I then fit the assembled lid on the box and trim away the excess so my lid edges are flush with the box on all sides. This is just easier for me than trying to assemble a lid that has already been cut to final dimensions. Glad to see someone else do it this way. Would also like your dimensions for this box. Referencing your hands when applying the finish, I would estimate 8"-9" square x 2-1/2"-3" high. Also, I bought some 12"x12" cork squares from Michael's or Hobby Lobby to fit the bottom of the box and attach felt to that. This way you can adjust for a prefect fit so you don't have "just one chance." Also, you can wrap the felt over the edges for a very neat appearance. Nice work and video. Well produced.

A beautiful box you made. I once learned a good method for lining insides of boxes like this. Cut a piece of dense cardboard the size of the face to line. Glue the felt to the cardboard, also wrapping around couple of cm to the other side. If the felt is thin or otherwise delicate, glueing only on the back can also be enough to hold it in place. Then glue the cardboard to the box face. This way the corners and especially top edges come out very nice and clean.

These turned out great! I've used a lot of reclaimed wood and love to see what you do. Always inspiring. I especially liked seeing the mitered pieces that you used to get the lids to fit. Very clever. I've been using thin rectangular solid pieces, but it's always good to have other options. Nice job in fitting them, too. Good luck with settling in, renovating!

ps. I've found some pieces of this kind of wood few months ago and have a lot of fun making things out of it.
Avoid using a pincer when removing the nails since it will cut off the nail when enough force is applied to the pincer. Instead, you should use flat pliers instead since they have serrations on them to increase the grip on the nails. For the nails that are extra hard to remove I turn to a vice grip or locking pliers to grip the nail and then use a hammer or nail puller under the vice grip for leverage. if you use a round nosed vice grip then you can even roll the nail out. Though make sure to have some sacrificial piece between the wood and the vice3 gr9ipo since it will otherwise mar the surface heavily. You can also use a small torch to heat up the nail and it will be easier to remove.
That's a great trip, but it looked like the nail broke rather than being cut
@@DragonGateDesign Yes, it might be that way on that particular nail though as far as I could see there were many more nails that broke and he marked before cutting the wood.

Those came out awesome. I've been afraid to even try those cuts but you demonstrate it so well. Thank you. Also thanks for saying how long it took. I'm new at woodworking and I always feel everything I do takes forever. It's not a race and everyone's ability is different but it's still a good reference.
I'll be in UK this summer and really hope to find some hardwoods along the street.... meranti is a great find. The best I've found in Italy is cheap pallets😂

I don't know of I'm seeing it wrong with the corner gap but to me it looked worse after burnishing. Great work and awesome video
Yeah, I think because the burnished left some grey colouring on the corner of the wood!
Have you found a difference in the amount of wood people throw away at the new house?
The downside of moving is not knowing where all the good free wood is anymore!
I don’t think there’ll be much to salvage around these parts unfortunately, but I will be going in to Norwich quite a lot for work so hopefully I’ll still find a few bits!
Very nice box and like the process and compound mitre joints. My only critique would be those 'gold' knob things they look a little small in proportion and introducing something round into what is a very angular and predominantly square design. Camera angles may be distorting the size / ratio. Think I personally would have been tempted to keep it all wood. You could have made a blunt wedge shape that was also square.
But hey taste is a matter of personal preference.
Yeah. It’s difficult to find good hardware that is smaller than regular drawer handles. I’m not sure I’d have liked the wood on wood option though
if you heat the nail up with a torch it will pull out easy

Thanks for the video, Keith. I am new to compound miter cuts...so to clarify....for the 45 bevel cut on each end of the 4 side pieces, one side gets the 10 degree miter to the "left" of "0" and the opposite end gets the 10 degree miter to the "right?" Right?
Yes I think that sounds right
@@RagnBoneBrownAfter watching the video again, it appears that is not the case, especially when you show the "cut and flip" when the 10 degree miter stays in the same position, and the part is flipped and cut on the same setting. Anyway, thanks for responding.

Hi, For some reason that I cannot explain I don't like these boxes, they are well made and the angles are a neat touch but they just don't do it for me. Luckily other people will like them and buy them from you. I can only put my dislike down to the individual likes and dislikes, although if we all liked the same thing it would be a boring life.
I know you just moved... But you need to watch audio quality. The parts where you were in your house was too horrible to listen to because of the echo and reverb. Would be a great video to do a video on making sound panels for your recording area.
If I’d have filmed it in the workshop you’d complain about the road noise. Sound panels aren’t really a priority right now, I’ve got a house to renovate and a workshop to set up
