In this video, Rosy talks through the biggest mistakes she sees in greenhouses over the cold winter months. - Jak na to + styl
I’m in southern Ontario Canada. I winter over young perennials in my unheated greenhouse and have some seeds in pots winter sowing. It can get into the high 20’sC on a sunny day. I often have to open the door in the winter. I have an automatic roof vent. I found out the hard way that the auto opener is not winter hardy so I now remove it for winter.
Good tips. One word of caution though when allowing watering cans to stand full…check for dead mice. I just found one this morning in a watering can that held only an inch of so of water…I’ve found them in full cans in the past. Our structure isn’t as tightly sealed as this greenhouse, but mice are crafty and can find the smallest opening to get inside.
Yes and not just mice often frogs. Perhaps a mesh over the top may help.
I just put a long stick in my cans or stick a plug in the opening.
Thank you Rosie, great video, some tips I’ve learned definitely
Thanks Rosie. I only just bought my greenhouse a couple of months ago, and you've just answered all the questions that I had.
Tip: Look under pots and trays before you take them into the greenhouse - there might be slugs or snails lurking there!
Yes they are sneaky and hide successfully under the rims of pots or in the drainage holes
What a treat for December 🎄 thanks Rosie 💋
Really helpful thanks. Ive got my summer watering under control finally. Hopefully now winter will be successful
This is so timely! My husband just put up an inexpensive polybicarbonate greenhouse this summer and we don’t really know what we’re doing. Thank you for all these great tips! We consistently get down to -15°C during the winter and every so many years, it will get down to -30°C. We decided not to put our automatic openers in our two ceiling vents since we knew we were going into winter where we get a lot of snow. I was surprised how hot it gets in there on a sunny winter day! I could seriously sunbathe in there if I wanted:) I have paper whites blooming in there at the moment, but that’s the only thing I put in there. January is when we get really cold and I’m assuming they’ll die back at that point. I was excited to find your channel, and I’m a new subscriber! Thank you for all the knowledge you share!!❤
Wonderful video! Where I am in the upper US it just gets way too cold to keep plants in the greenhouse over winter, but luckily I have an unheated breezeway with plenty of light to keep most tender plants over winter. Even tho most things are dormant it's always nice to see some green in the middle of winter. Great video and good tips!
Hi Rosy, another great and useful video. I only have a small unheated glass house. Cutting a long story short, I have had to plant all my spring bulbs, from daffodils to tulips into pots. Would these be better off in the glass house, or should I just leave them outside?
I would leave them outside as long as you do not have a squirrel problem
Thanks Rosie... could you tell me any tips for a cold frame ( I don't have a greenhouse ). Do I just leave it alone and let my dormant foxgloves sit there until spring.
Ventilation is still key even with a coldfame. On bright dry but not too cold days open it up to allow good air flow. But don’t leave it open for too long.
I have a portable greenhouse inside a shed😢is this ok for the plants🫣
Has the shed got daylight?
If not you will need artificial lights for the plants unless they are all dormant
@@rosyhardy18 yes Rosy - I think the roof is made of pvc material: it’s sort of like thick, translucent plastic
