  • The Roland JU-06a is a great portable JUNO-106 and 60 synthesizer in a tiny format. I love it and in this episode of haQ attaQ I'll show you why I find it to be a great hardware synth option for mobile music producers.

    After a year or two using TAL on PC/iPad, I bought one of these. IMO the sound is better, but even more importantly the physicality of the switches and sliders just makes it a joy to use! I've got massive hands too, and have little issue with the small sliders.

    The Boutique line in general is just really good. Personally, the new sh-4d is the Roland piece I’m eyeing but you can’t deny the sound here. Probably the closest emulation outside of getting the actual thing. Wish I hadn’t sold my D-05 bc secondhand prices are insane now 😫

    Honestly? It's sounds so much better than I thought it would. I remember people really hating on these things when they first came out, probably because of the size, so I subconsciously overlooked it. I still have my eyes on the jd-08 since I dig this form factor, but don't have much in terms of pcm sounds, but the Juno one better than I expected. Enjoyed this vid.

    I keep going back and forth on whether I should get this one or not. I use the Tal emulation a lot and it sounds pretty great already, but then ... physical sliders would be nice. Considering how often I end up watching videos on the JU-06A, I should probably just get one and make music with it instead 😅

    The 4 Voice polyphony count of the JU6a, is mitigated on the Roland system 8 Juno 106, you got eight voices. It’s the same engine as the 01A it’s the boutique engine also known as the ACB ;-)
    If you ever go the route of the ACB System 8, get the system 100 M plug out… The sounds it makes is fantastic the bases are fantastic of the high twiggy parts amazing.
    the Juno 106 plugout comes with the system 8 you don’t have to purchase anything extra.

    I really missed the Juno 106 I had in the late 80s and early 90s, so I bought the Ju-06a a few years ago to get that fat analog sound. It’s dope but frankly the lack of 6 voice polyphony bummed me out. I now use the JU-06a to control Softube’s Model 84 VST (a 106 clone) in my desktop DAW (Reason). The Model 84 sounds a bit warmer and closer to the original than the Roland emulation, and has the full 6 voices. Using the Ju-06a as a control surface mapped to the Model 84 works great except for some minor issues (buttons don’t light up, etc). The Roland Juno controls are perfect for realtime synth action… I love my Ju-06a now more than ever!!

    This is so much more like I had hoped for from my Boutique JP-08. That same day I bought the Yamaha Reface CS which is so fast to dial in great sounds which the JP isn't.
    The CS is my go-to when I'm composing: the JP only gets dusted off when my CS or MicroKORG aren't quite enough - and that's rare. I actually like the JP's cute little faders but getting it to sound great is laborious. Too often the JP sounds modeled to my ears.

    I loved the section on the Juno history. I wasn’t aware of the HS units. Personally, I’m really having a hard time seeing why I’d ever buy a second hardware synth in addition to my Minilogue. The one thing appealing about the JU-06a, though, is that I could use it as a controller for TAL-U-NO-LX. The Minilogue works for that too, but having the actual Juno layout would be nice. But it is really hard for me to justify a JU-06a over a JX-08. The panel layout is very close, and I can’t imagine that-for me-the sound difference between ACB and ABM would be worth more than the extra features.

    Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude! I just have to say thank you for the deep dive into Juno Nerd Porn included in this video. I am a massive Juno fan. It’s my favourite synth and TAL gets a lot of use in my tracks. I would love one of these. I wish I had still got access to a Juno 60 but…. 😢 The sound of the Juno takes me to a happy place, right back to my first band, many centuries ago. Your nerdy is much loved and appreciated by me. By the way, do you remember some time ago I told you I wanted to have a go at Cyberpunk but with metal guitars? I’ve released my first Cyber Metal track - Relentless, available to stream or to watch the vid on CZcams. You might like it. There’s lots more of this to come too. X

    @brianbergmusic5288 Před rokem +2

    This seems like an instrument where its simplicity is potentially it's greatest strength. It invites one to be a keyboardist/performer creating new soundscapes with a narrow pallet of sounds that work really well in any genre/band -- molding the sounds in real time at will. Modern sound designers might look down on it as simple, but that would miss the point entirely. It might be one of the stratocasters for a keyboardist -- the musician makes it their own (especially with a pedal philosophy as an added dimension). As you stated: it's interface forces you to get personal with it very quickly (paraphrased). Because of the direction that my imagination is taking this piece of gear, I would have three preferences:
    1.) Hardware. (unless your MIDI controller can comfortably map the same vibe -- which mine cannot).
    2.) A bigger keyboard (at least a couple more octaves).
    3.) 6 voice (minimum) polyphony would be a deal breaker for me.
    Bonus.) *Maybe* a keytar-controller if you are in a band and want to stand & perform to the audience. I'm imagining a guitarist and a Juno-user dueling like sonic-Jedi already. I probably don't get out much, as I'm certain this already exists.
    I don't think of it as a perfect synth (might not exist), but it seems very useful. I could see a black-belt user almost not needing presets -- only having them as quick button presses for live acts. A black belt user would have those patches as recipes tabooed on the metaphorical back of their hands.

    lol 🎹🐄🌞... cool presentation J. one of these days i'll get the battery changed in my 60. i often wondered if this acb JU would sound 'good' enough...i'm missing the snappiness with fluffiness in the envelope(only way i can describe) but sounds good enuff for music. had no idea about the Extra features 😮 The analog version benefits from that subtle dritiness that allows one to listen to the arp for 24hrs 🤤(yes,.. i used this simple bliss to intro for dj set many yrs ago)... this ain't a versus video i know. the modelled JU is perfect for mobile use and sounds damn good. but look at me, i'm using mainly soft anyways these days... convenience. I've got several dinosaurs in storage. JU WHAT?!4voices in a J6? plus no wheels at all?? oh my. ehh...and just one final rhetorical question... why dont ALL synths just have a switchvto flip the env!? it should be a rule..law... thanks for the Monster vid doc. great effort, as always 👍

    Hi Jakob, Hope you're doing good. I would like to ask you if you know a way to record audio from internet directly inside Koala sampler standalone or when Koala is hosting by AUM ? Do i need extra app or is there a hack inside AUM to input internet audio directly ? Thank in advance and good day.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  Před rokem +1

      There is no way of actually streaming site-audio into koala in stand alone more. However you do have options when using Koala sampler as an AUv3 inside a host. You could use AUM and load Koala into a channel FX slot. I’m the input there is a variety of apps you could use that connects to internet and lets you stream audio into AUM. You load a plugin like that into the channel insert, open it up and oil for the website you want to stream from.
      I made a video about “internet apps” czcams.com/video/adIJxAb-e20/video.html
      .
      I also made a video about internet video and podcast apps: czcams.com/video/Kge4QsVauYs/video.html
      .
      You can also use the built in iOS screen recorder to record your screen while browsing a site and load the video into a sample a lot in koala. It will convert it to audio.

      Shouldn’t be no. But considering the time span since “mobile gear” started being a thing a lot of hardware tech companies got into, it’s not that long ago. Industry is still catching up. For instance USB-C has existed for quite some time but there are still devices coming out with micro USB. In time I think most gear will be class compliant.
