I had heard it was b/c there is technology that exists today that is not publicly available where the authorities know digging later will offer less damage. One example is the Publicly available DEM maps from all the LIDAR performed in 2018, where now there are new government audit programs for changes to elevations around cites for combating economic disasters like floods.
It’s 100% about who built it and what they looked like. They did the same thing with the history of the pyramids. They’d rather sell the lie that it was aliens than acknowledging non white civilizations built great structures and monuments.

That's a big part of the answer right there.
Why would they care about our history being wrong? Archeology and scientific theories were wrong many times. There's no reason for them to religiously protect some "status quo" here. To the contrary, Turkish archeologists would gain worldwide fame for making a discovery that changed our history books.
So the only plausible reason they do this is that they know or suspect what will be found there and they deem it too dangerous for the public and the world to know. Like something important about religions, ancient technological civilizations, or ancient alien contact.

Based on my reading from a quick google search, it just sounds like an ancient Hittic civilization that did pagan practices.
