Bedminster is a suburb in the South of Bristol, with bustling streets full of unique and charming shops. However, if you stop for a moment, and take a breath, look around you, perhaps up at the sky, it is clear that all is not as it should be. Is it social decline, or something more....aethereal?
Join the people of Bedminster in heroic pilgrimages to unknown properties, enchanted Garden Centres, and maybe even other planets. Answer all the most burning questions! How do you contact the alien overlords if you like beside a motorway? What do Estate Agents see when they go to Paradise? How do 350 year old vampires fare in post-Brexit Britain?
Set on D Day 2024 amidst the backdrop of events in Gaza, The Madonna of Bedminster is a satiric parable on 21st century Western values, asking the question posed by Fritz Lang to William Friedkin "Without religion, how will we teach ethics?"​
The original music is by the brilliant Palestinian composer and oud maestro Samih Madhoun, in recordings made in the Gaza strip during 2023-24. The rest of the music is a deluxe mix of rhumba from the 1920s-40s, with a dash of waltzes and foxtrots thrown in for good measure.
The narrator of the film is Shadi Zaqtan, a composer, songwriter and poet from Palestine. A cameo appearance from the Danish Techno Warrior Goodiepal as an Exotic Dancer gives Euro-relief in this fable of Brexitland.
The film was devised by Ergo Phizmiz, with Lottie Bowater and Elvis Herod, who also photographed it. The cast, comprising Anne Jamieson, Mark Anthony Pearce, Ariadne Robertson, Elvis Herod, Joe Eaton, Laurence Tuck and Lottie Bowater, give beautiful, highly nuanced performances. Ergo Phizmiz appears as your unreliable guide. The locals of Bedminster served as our chorus. Dom Waters contributed frescoes of the oppressors and the oppressed, and Ergo Phizmiz edited and directed the entire monster.
