this makes me think of simple tone generators such as the ones you can make using snap circuits. in those circuits, they have capacitors that charge and discharge quickly (and resistors and transistors), producing a current that flashes a light or makes a click from a speaker. if the current is emitted fast enough, the clicks turn into a continuous tone
