I've passed my test, but am getting anxious about gear changes and stalling again. These videos are helping to reduce those worries for me. Thank you SO much!
SAME HERE
@Jocelyn theres only two ways you stall
1.) releasing clutch too quickly
2.) changing gears too quickly don’t do these you will never stall
@Jocelyn Just dont be scared of pressing the gas :P
Practice makes master. Learning manual is one thing, but learning the car you are to operate is something for itself. You will only learn and master it by driving it a lot. Just dont stress, take it easy and remember that stalling is OK. My car is terrible at reverse, sometimes i end up stalling it 2-3 times before i end my driving session :P (Some cars just don't have a lot of power to begin with.. Its a KIA Rio 2014 LX 4DR Hatchback, works brilliantly when going forward, if reversing in any form of hill-like terrain. Its the easiest car to stall :') )
If you feel that driving manual is a struggle, find a parking lot and just practice clutch control. Once you got the muscle memory, it will not fade for a good while :P (if even it will fade at all)
My old instructor with a particular driving school said, select gear 1 as you slow down. My current instructor said, select gear 1 if you know you will stop, if not there is no need.
1 if you're approaching a junction and if you are going to stop
@@Louis-yn8gt Yes if you are going to stop
1 if you're going to stop, 2 if you're just slowing down to turn or something
I always do 1 once I have stopped 2 until I’ve stopped
Think you guys are mixing up stopping with parking up.
The instructor here was talking about pulling up at the side if the Rd to park. Why select any gear, as gears are going not stopping. Just stay in the gear your in, brake clutch down and select neutral after handbrake.
I am about to start my driving lessons in a week and your videos are pushing my confidence up a lot. Thanks man!
I’ve already passed my test, but I still struggle with gears, this has really helped!
Emily Jade Thank you

@@rangerrye6590 cus shit not easy 😂
@@rangerrye6590 I drove with many people after they passed(even drivers with many years experience) their tests and most of them release the clutch too early or too fast so the car shakes all the time..
I passed a year ago only trying to get back to it now and changing of gears is the worst
7:20 this is good rule for first 3 gears, as you go up in 4, 5 and 6, changing gears at 2k rpms could be too low unless you are driving a diesel truck that runs at very low rpms, but on cars as I have read from many sources and how it feels natural on my turbo diesel car, the switching point should be 2.4k - 2.6k rpms when you are moderately accelerating so that the higher gear will engage at least at 1.6-1.8k rpms where you begin to get the best pulling power and with 2k rpms you know you are cruising with the correct gear. If you switch gears at lower rpms, it feels like I am putting too much stress on the engine and gear box although it will still pull up just fine (try accelerating with bicycle from near stop on highest gears and you will feel the stress it puts on chain and gears.
It is also the way the gear ratios are selected. For 6 speed gearbox, 6th speed is for 90+ km/h, 5th speed for 70+ km/h, 4th speed for 50+ km/h, 3rd speed for 30+ km/h, 2nd speed for 10+ km/h and 1st speed 0-10km/h and you will see that at those speeds it makes perfect match with 2k rpms.
when do u change to gear 6?? i have bought a nissan juke never had a car with 6 gears before? any help would be grateful thanks

Something understands how cars work. I noticed a loot of instructors change and learn the pupils to change the gears under the optimal parameters. I don't know why

Just moved to the U.K from the U.S, trying to learn the ways of a manual transmission and I had a problem with stalling whenever I went to Park, but you just made me realize I never used the clutch before I made a full stop I would just press on the break and stall. Thank you 🙏
Truly appreciate the time and efforts you put in to your viewers , explaining in depth.. all your videos are really like having a professional right next me # keeep ittttt uppp!
Thank you, I always listened to the car and whent from that. I'm glad I've seen this! Thank you, you're videos are amazing, my instructor hasn't made any of these things clear to me
This is incredibly helpful; thank you. Hope you're keeping safe.
Thankyou for the helpful video! I'm currently taking my lessons. And I'm struggle a little bit to remmeber the gears. This has helped me alot. I'm on my 2nd lesson 3rd next week. I'm going to keep coming back to the video and try and drill it into my head =)
This video was very helpful I was asking questions in my head and you answered them moments later
I'm currently taking my lessons in London and literally surprised my instructor on 3rd lesson with my knowledge and control and all the credit goes to your videos. On 4th lesson which is on Monday he's taking me on a long drive and he said he'll make me do 70mph. Thank you so much. If I ever come Wolverhampton I'm definitely buying you guys a dinner. Cheers

This video is so helpful in terms of explanation of rev count and gear change
I’ve been watching this channel for a while it’s helped me, driving test is tomorrow.
How did you do
This was a very useful video, have seen many explanations on when to change gears but this one was the most practical. Well done and thanks.

Great video. Very useful videos for teaching my daughter to drive. I've been driving for 25 years with 20 years no claims bonus, never caused a crash. Even though I'm a very careful safe driver, I'm amazed how many bad habits I've picked up. I'm having to relearn everything upto DVSA standard to give my daughter lessons. Thanks for your videos bro, great straight to the point teaching
Dang. Your insurance must be cheap lol
Hi were you located I need to learn
I'm here for a different reason I've been driving now for over 20-years but it's my first time driving a used car and a diesel car I was struggling with gear changes as I've always had brand new Ecoboost engines from Fords I appreciate what you've demonstrated as it is the way I am driving so I don't need to worry that I'm lunging the engine
I’m not even old enough to get/drive one yet. These videos help me understand so much tho. Thank you
You the best.. Wish you were in my country.. Best instructor ever

Cheers boss lmao I've been driving for over a year now and just came across this video ...
wish i was in the uk such an awesome teacher to learn from
Changing gears has been a big problem with me.. thanks for this video
Ohhh it was so helpful loved it thanks
When to change gears depends a lot on whether you have a petrol engine or a diesel engine. Petrol engines have more power and torque on higher rpms, diesel engines are more happy on lower rpms. Also petrol engines are easier to stall as they have much lower torque at 1000-1500 rpm than diesel does, you should apply more gas when moving off in a petrol car.
I am following you from Germany; the good thing is that, i am slowly getting used to it
Very helpful thank you great content
I'm on the waiting list to start having my driving lessons and your videos are very helpful. Awesome video, thank you. 😊
wow u explained that so well and in such short time
Driving manual is more than basics, that are - important. But, I'd like my instructor told me couple of things. For exp. 1. Never overtake in highest gear, or in gear without enough momentum, but in one gear lower. My first car was non-turbochared diesel, so it was difficulte to gain speed by itself, and almost no way - uphill. 2. You don't have to downshift 5th-4th-3rd-2nd.., every time. You can skip gears. Because there might be sudden dangerous situation in traffic, where you must to reduce speed significantlly or quickly, while driving in,let's say 5th gear (at70-80kmh). In that case goes: start braking-clutch down-neutral- increase braking-choose corect gear (perhaps 2nd at 20-30km/h, depending of speed)-brake off-clutch up. But keep on mind, at that point, tires are dissengaged from the engine, and they brake more roughly, so you can slow down or stop in time. Also, be aware of other vehicles behind. So, if anyone ever decides to practise this, please find the road with no traffic. Btw, if I start adding here examples why is this important to know and be able to use, this would become an essay ,not just a comment. 3. How to measure distance in seconds between car in front and you. This instructor does say that to beginners. And that's good. As many other things, I found that on CZcams. One more thing, about up-shifting timing. If you don't hear any metal to metal sound in your gearbox, or the vehicle doesn't struggle to speed up afterwards. You did it right.
Helpful & insightful videos- driving has gradually improved 👌🏼
Well I was learning on Fiesta from 1999 so anything digital didn't exist back then such as gear shift notification. Simple and best for me was to learn it listening to the engine. You could get some hint from the rev clock when to change the gear but that always depends on the car you're driving, some cars need their gear shift activated sooner some later, depends on the rev power, so the best way is by sound of the car.
I’m about to go for my clutch and gear changing lessons now , this helps ot
Been driving for years now. Just watching for funzies
I love your videos!
just got up to fourth gear for the first time today 😎
just crashed got up to second a car while reversing for the first time this year 😎
I'm stuck on 3
You guys drive?
I did 5th gear recently after having an irrational fear of it
blew up my gearbox because i shifted to first at 30 mph😎
Thnx bro it helped me a lot
awesome thanks for that lesson !:)
im turning 16 soon and thats when im allowed to start driving, so i cant stop watching theese videos. My parents drive automatics, but i really want to learn manual aswell. So here i am! also i do have driving experience, because we have a private road, but i've only driven an automatic, never have i ever driven a manual car. Though my older brother said i could try his car :)) so excited to start oficially driving!
Good luck!
@@ronl8624 Thanks!! :)
finally someone that has an alternative to "listen to the engine".. i'm trying to learn and I really hate that answer, I understand things better if someone explains the logic to it, great video! 👏
I like the way that you are teaching
I Do it Like This
Sometimes i listen to the Engine Sound
But Mostly i use The Speedometer to Be Sure.
Each Gear is Setup for Differren't Speed
1st Gear: 0-15/20MPH
2nd Gear: 12-25MPH
3rd Gear: 25-40MPH
4th Gear: 40-50MPH
5th Gear: 50-65MPH
6th Gear: Above 65MPH
It does depend on the Type of Car Though🚘.
Of you have a 5 or a 6 Speed Transmission.
I Put The Car into 1st Gear if My Speed doesn't Exceed 6 Mph.
For Hillstarts it's best to use the Handbrake to hold the Car in Position.
You are a good man. Thank you.
Shouldnt u shift to 4th gear at 30??
@@alijaved3413 depends on your car and the gear
Ratio but on average this guy is alright as my car takes around the same mph to shift up or down
@@alijaved3413 yh buy really depends on your car
ohhh so tjhats what the gears mean thank you
A few pointers. First of all, it's not bad to rev the engine higher. Of course this depends on the car you're driving. For example, in my car, I have to rev to around 3k rpm before upshifting. Other cars will have to rev higher or lower, and it all depends on gear ratios. Furthermore, your engine is made to rev to high rpm. That's why you have a redline. Of course this is bad for fuel economy, but it's not going to damage the engine. And secondly, downshifting whilst braking is also good for the car. By downshifting and using the engine braking, along with the brakes, it will not only increase the braking potential, but also reduces wear on the brakes. Although, if you don't rev match, it will increase wear on the clutch. I don't really agree with his arguments. It's better to shift slightly later, than earlier, lugging the engine. It's also good practice to downshift as you brake.
Awesome mate 😊
You're a gentle tuitor.
Thanks this helps a lots 😊
Wow i love your driving lesson
Might be getting a Lincoln Continental soon, this helps a lot
that is very helpful thank you very much
That was helpful. Thank you

This is useful for me as when selecting a gear that isn't in line with the previous it takes me longer. I'll try your smooth movement with your hand positions.

Thanks for the video i am learning now how to drive a car and it helps me alot thanks again.
My fear when seeing my dad drive was how he knew to change gears , I've avoided my driving test because of gears I just thought you basically guessed but now I see its right in front of you and only time to change it back to nutral is when your stopping which is great thanks!
If you are taking driving lessons and fearing putting in for your test due to gear changes, you have the wrong instructor, and are no where near ready for your test.
Exactly I felt the same 😔😔😔
Your instructor will tell you exactly when to change to what gear until you’ve learnt to know that for yourself so don’t worry.
I think when to change gear also massivly depends on the engine. Theres a car we used to have in the family, Ford 1.8 TDCi and this engine is so well known for this- anything less than 1800rpm it has no power at all and just diesel knocks like crazy, this engine likes a good run between 2200-3400rpm ideally, and its just the odd quirk of this engine. But like I say it differs massively between engines- my grandads car 1.5 dci Clio happily pulls like a train from 1000rpm onwards. It happily pulls up a steep hill at 30mph fourth gear, about 1200rpm. If you wanted to accelerate faster just push foot down more and it just carries on pulling like a train right up. Our current car- 1.6 HDi ford cmax likes it anywhere between 1600-3000rpm
Im currently 16, will be 17 soon so can start learning to drive, and honestly can't wait lol. Ive got autism, and anyone with autism or knows it willl know in some people you have one subject you know loads about and can talk forever- for me its cars. I'm in some of the forums to specific models and I am one of the members that offers the most help and advice, and i'm only 16 I don't even drive yet!
I've been doing some mock theory tests online and passing them, and thats without even doing any revision into it yet lol
I love watching your videos and find them very interesting and helpful!
That's really cool, I have Asperger syndrome and that one obsessive focus for me is maths. I didn't know a thing about cars or driving before I started learning, but I've been applying that focus superpower we seem to have onto driving and car knowledge and I understand everything you wrote here (whereas a few months ago there would've been no chance of that lol)
I m ur new subscriber bro 👍👍
Remember the old phrase....gears to go, brakes to slow.
Brought to you by Brake Pads 'R' Us Ltd.
@John Smith yep!
A lower gear also makes you slow down faster than a higher gear, even with no braking.
How about brake fade? Fckn retards constantly u have their foot on the brake when going down hill. Shift down and use gear braking instead
@@edwardtye4119
True.
Though downshifting into a lower gear and using it to to brake might make the wheels lock up.
Thanks for your advice God bless

Youre right to do so. You need 1 to start off at a juction i guess

Didn’t know that. Handy tip for when I eventually buy my first car!
Ok, why does yt recommended me this, am I a bad driver?

4:15 it's not bad for the engine, especially in these turbo diesels. The turbo starts to spool at about +-2k rpm and if you dont let the turbo work it will get clogged eventually.
A lot of people think the engine is struggling when it's at high RPM, but it's actually spinning that fast because it's finding it really easy to spin.
@@edwardtye4119 very common misconception that its bad for engines to rev.....
A friend had that exact issue on a TDI Jetta, consistently shifting to early.
@@stevenking2946 and that’s why racing drivers find it so easy to shift by just listening to there engine, they know how to do it best
