  • The 2nd video in my guitar Solo Battle series, where I take two solos from each competitors albums starting at their very first and ending at their last, current etc. and put them in a back and forth duel of the solos to determine who is the superior guitarist
In the second round, in the blue corner, we have legendary Metallica and Exodus soloist, Joe Satriani pupil, and one of the innovators of the Thrash Metal style, Kirk Hammett, known for his very bluesy style of shredding. This man is responsible for countless people picking up a guitar, and still shreds to this day in Metallica, decades after replacing former, far more aggressive guitarist Dave Mustaine in the Legendary band
And in the red corner, we have former Metallica, current Megadeth solo machine Dave Mustaine, known for his only desire of vengeance against Metallica, which is his fuel to produce destructive, high speed and chaotic yet strangely melodic solos, this Thrash titan is considered to be one of the greatest shredders of legend, coming back with a band heavier, faster and far more aggressive than his Metallica rivals
With hate and mean spirited nature his fuel
He really has something to prove in this duel of the rivals
So who will win out of two bitter rivals out of two of the biggest bands in Thrash, no, Metal history
Both representing their bands Metallica, and Megadeth
    Kirk Hammett?
    Or Dave Mustaine?
    Let’s find out!!!
Side note - I left out St. Anger because, well there are no solos and left out Risk because I felt the next two albums were more suited for a shred off, and Kirk didn’t have enough albums under his belt to do em all

@Montanajj as individual players, Megadeth has more talented players... but the way they bring the music together is just not very enticing. Drumming doesn't quite match the Guitars, lead guitar often doesn't match the rhythm (especially when mustane does that obnoxious pentatonic shredding that any 16 year old at guitar center could do). Mustaine also was also not as good of a singer as Hetfield. He was a pioneer of Thrash, an excellent riff maker, and a good talent scout.. but IDK. Megadeth just too wild. Faster doesn't always = better. Only angsty teenagers and adrenaline junkies with ADHD think so.

there is no comparison for me. Dave has such a better feel and sound, his articulation and sound is way more clean, he plays through the changes instead of against them, even when he uses pentatonics it makes sense cause he is respecting the vibe of the song, many megadeth sings have that bluesy jazzy feel to them. I just think Dave is probably one of the biggest genius of metal music, i can hear in his music a very high level of music knowledge specially regarding harmonic choices and even groove changes.
Kirk just sounds like a bad shredder to me, i dont dislike his pentatonic stuff, its just the context in which he chooses to play it and tbh after watching a bunch of docs showing how metallica construct there music, kirk is very limited creatively. Still its all about taste, im a jazz musician and i tend to value different things... and no complex is not better, better is better, therefor Dave is the man.

the two are identical in the use of pentatonic phrases, well, this was one of the characteristics why james liked kirk's way of playing, the detail is that kirk abuses the wah wah a lot, for that reason he is often criticized

The fact you even have to compare the frontman who plays rhythms writes all the music and sings to Kirk who had little to no say in the songwriting (we know it was James Lars and cliff before his passing) says enough.

I prefer Kirk’s playing over Dave’s. Dave is a really good shredder thrash player but I just like the style of Kirk more because of how melodic it is. One of my favorite solos of his is the wherever I may roam solo. And Kirk wrote some of my favorite riffs from Metallica

In the past I always gave it to Dave but on a close listen most of Dave's solos sound very similar because of his scale of choice. He plays very fast and having seen him live twice can say he's cleaner than this audio shows. Kirk though has close to that speed in bursts but playes more bluesy which gives his solos more distinction from one another. I feel that Kirk because of the way Metallica evolved over the years has been able to play different styles and Dave didn't change as much. Mainly Dave plays to impress and Kirk more to flow with the song.

Kirk has the physical style for a lead guitarist but his solos are just random bits and not too organized. Not in a good way. Dave is just a better guitarist musicaly. I know the millions of albums metallica has sold wont show that but it's clear to me that mustaine is just better. Deth is one of my favorite bands. I love metallica as well. But dave clearly just better
