- Over the course of four consecutive nights in May of 2023, I had the pleasure of playing JS Bach's complete Sonatas, Partitas and Cello Suites, at The Met Cloisters' beautiful Fuentidueña Chapel. This video captures the last two nights.
As someone who grew up in a family of Classical musicians with high expectations of excellence, I have always been extremely critical of my playing. Normally I would have been hesitant about sharing a video that has all the things that can (and did) occur during a live performance: nerves, out of tune or wrong notes, occasional memory slips, etc. I am now trying to turn a corner, and my one New Year's resolution for 2024 was to be a little bit kinder to myself. I'm sharing this video simply as a document of where I was as a musician in 2023. I hope you find something interesting or enjoyable in it; and all the little wrong things that happened will act as a simple proof that the playing was done by a regular human being, and not by AI :)
The video of the Sonatas & Partitas is here: • Johnny Gandelsman play...
I'm deeply grateful to Limor Tomer, Emery Kerekes, Andy Biskin and the rest of the Met Live Arts team for making this such a memorable experience.
Recorded live on May 24th & 25th in the Fuentidueña Chapel at The Met Cloisters, New York City.
I was fortunate to have attended this concert, and came away with a new appreciation for these pieces. As a violist, I am familiar with the viola transcriptions, and the original cello versions. But this was a totally new experience. Your playing is exquisite. I will remember this special night at the Cloisters. Thank you.
Only can say how I am proud of you,Johnny!
Thanks to be my son!

Fantástico Maestro!!!
Thanks, again! Seems you use different bow and violin from the recordings in 2021! Any special resons?
"high expectations of excellence"... sometimes I wonder if this helps or harms music in general.
