The Definitive Duane Allman Statesboro Blues Lesson - Part 1

  • If you've ever wanted to learn Duane Allman's iconic slide guitar solo from the live At Fillmore East version of Statesboro Blues, look no further. I've done my best to break it down in four bar sections, explaining the licks, equipment, tone and techniques used by the master himself. I'm sure there will be questions about my guitar setup. The guitar is a 100% stock early 2000's Gibson SG standard. I believe the pickups are 57 classics, but have never actually looked. The amp is a Fender tweed Deluxe that was rebuilt to 5F3 specs. It has a Weber Alnico speaker that was mic'ed with an old American Shure SM57 and recorded direct into Garageband with zero EQ or effects. I couldn't turn the amp up loud because I was getting too much bleed in my lavalier mic, so I added an EHX Soul Food pedal to hit the front end a little harder to simulate a cranked amp. To get closer to Duane's Fillmore tone, you would need a 50w Marshall bass head run through open back 4x12 cabinets with either JBL or Cerwin Vega speakers. But I wanted to use a small amp for this to prove that you can get in the ballpark with just about any amp. 90% of the tone is going to come from your fingers and your technique.
    My camera ran out of memory card about 2/3 of the way into this vid, so I need to redo the last part. I will get that done ASAP. Hope you guys find this helpful. Let me know if you have questions or comments. Please like and subscribe!
    PS - If you dig the Allmans, you might enjoy the ABB tribute band I play in called SKYDOG. We pride ourselves on being as authentic as humanly possible. Come say hi at our website or Facebook!

    Thanks for putting this up. I’m not a guitar player but Duane has been in the center of my soul for 52 years. This is as close to how Duane played in on The Fillmore album as I’ve heard. Duane played it different every night as he was always pushing himself and experimenting. Thanks for being a Duane fan. He never got the respect he deserved.

    What gauge strings and how high the action do you recommend?

    • @VirtualWoodshed
      @VirtualWoodshed  Před 2 lety

      I’ve never measured the action. All I can tell you is it’s high enough to keep the slide from hitting the frets. For strings I use the lows from the back of 10s, and the highs from a pack of 11s. Try using those strings at your regular action. And then raise it slightly if you need to.

    So glad I came across this! You have absolutely nailed it! I've been playing for a long time but just recently decided to try to learn some slide & use some open tunings. If you get a chance, I'd be curious to know how high you set the action on the SG for slide playing. Thank you.

    • @VirtualWoodshed
      @VirtualWoodshed  Před 3 lety +3

      hey thanks for watching and for the comment. Great question. I've never measured it, but I do run the action just a hair taller on the SG which is my dedicated slide guitar. The real secret though is the string gauges. I took a tip from Derek Trucks and use the plain strings from a set of 11s. The low strings are from a set of 10s. I find the extra tension from the heavier plain strings makes it perfect for slide without having to raise the action very much. So I think the whole set goes 11, 14, 18, 26, 36, 46. Good luck!

I think that’s what Derek trucks does. But these days I run .012 flatwounds and leave the action fairly low. I think the flats get a lot closer to Duane’s tone.

No interstates allowed. We camped, slept in our car, crashed at rest stops, you name it. Took in as many juke joints as we could all the way down. Did the delta blues museum in Clarksdale, saw Muddy’s boyhood home on Stovall’s plantation, Robert Johnson’s alleged grave. Took two weeks. Had Freddie and Albert King in the tape deck for the whole trip. No cell phones, no internet, hell I don’t even think we had a map. Drank nothing but cheap beer and ate some of the best BBQ I’ve ever tasted. We couldn’t have been more like Jake and Elwood, in fact my dad’s middle name was actually Elwood, no joke. I don’t care for Derek’s Indian or Eastern or whatever you want to call it influences in his sound. I don’t know much about him except that the few tracks I’ve sampled all use that Hindu tonal stuff, and it’s just not nice to my ears personally.

      Honestly man it doesn’t really matter. Duane Allman played numerous different guitars throughout his career and always sounded like himself. I will say though, whatever guitar you use, it’s easier if you set the action up medium-high when you’re learning this technique.

Honestly, DSW and Statesboro are so similar that it's really not worth doing a separate video. Just learn Statesboro til you've got it down cold and then use your ear to figure out DSW. I think you'll find that it will be pretty easy to figure out once you know Duane's main tricks. Good luck!

    Thank you for the lesson. I am new to slide playing. I always assumed that the slide should fit snugly on your finger. It looks like the bottle is much bigger than your finger, and the two fingers on either side are holding it in position. Is this correct? Thanks

    • @VirtualWoodshed
      @VirtualWoodshed  Před 4 lety

      well, I'd say gravity holds it in position! lol. But seriously, I prefer a loose fitting glass bottle. The neighboring fingers aren't really holding it in position at all. Just friction and gravity. Some people prefer a tighter metal slide, and I do use those on occasion. But my preference is the looser fit. Just try a few different things until you find what you like. Good luck! ~WW

    • @VirtualWoodshed
      @VirtualWoodshed  Před 6 lety +1

      tweed guitar hey there tweed, great question. I took a tip from Derek Trucks and use the high strings from a set of 11s and the low strings from a set of 10s. So it goes 11, 15, 19, 26, 36, 46. That gives a little more tension on the high strings and a little more slink on the low strings for rhythm playing. On dual purpose guitars I don’t mess with the action, but the SG is this video is dedicated slide so I do crank it up a bit. Brand wise I use D’Addario XLs for my slide guitars and GHS nickel rockers for standard. Thanks!

Your glass slide sounds beautiful, much nicer than the dunlop pyrex Glass slide i have. The Dunlop glass slide, it's ok, but I want something as close to the real thing as possible. Do you know of any glass bottle slide that is close to original coricidan bottles in sound, feel and inner dimensions ?( for the whip and wiggle ) ? Thankyou for your guidance, it is sincerely appreciated. cheers

      @VirtualWoodshed  Před 6 lety

      hmm. I have a couple of the Dunlops as a backups and honestly they don't sound that much different to me. But I do like the uneven feel and smaller inner diameter of the real ones. I think there are some real glass slides out there, but you'll just have to google. Years ago a guy from Mississippi was making exact copies of the coricidin bottles, but I think Duane's estate gave him a cease and desist. They were called "The Duane Allman Slide" and maybe you can find one on eBay. Happy slidin'!

    Where is your Statesboro Blues Part 2? I was waiting until you get to THE HARDEST part. The fret 20 to 22 lick. Lol. I've been practicing that for years now and still can't do it at 100% speed. I can do it at about 90%. The ABB books were spot on with that lick. You do it slightly different from the book and (I think) how Duane played it. The first 3 x he is doing his typical 22 to 20 on B and up to to 22 on G string. THEN, at least what I hear and how the ABB book has it; , he slides TWO TIMES UP from 20 to 22 on the B and hits 22 of G each time. Then he alternates SLIDING on the B as follows... down 22 to 20 one time; sliding UP 20 to 22 one time, down 22 to 20 1x; UP 20 to 22 1x; then 2x down 22 to 20 to end with the slide of G21 to D22.
    Dude, I know it's insane. But that's how I think he did it.
    And, like you, I have so many bootlegs from that era AND MONTH. And he never played it exactly like that everr again

      Yeah you’re right. It matters. But probably only 2 or 3% at most. The vast majority of your tone comes from your hands IMHO. If somebody who plays with glass has shitty tone, switching to metal will not solve their problem.

    how you get that tone i sound like s#it

    • @VirtualWoodshed
      @VirtualWoodshed  Před 5 lety +1

      it's in the fingers man. First of all, when you want to focus on tone, practice on an ACOUSTIC guitar. If your acoustic tone sucks, so will your electric!! But if your acoustic tone is good, that will directly translate to electric guitar. Duane got his tone from subtly varying his attack using the bare flesh of his right hand fingers. To do this style correctly, you will need to develop picking hand calluses roughly in the same spot as your fretting hand, but they will be slightly offset toward your thumb. Make sense? The more callus, the better the tone from my experience. Duane dug in HARD and the calluses will help you do that. Listen to his acoustic slide tone on things like "Mean Old World" and adjust your attack until you start to get it. Then once you've got that down, switch over to electric and you'll have it. That's the secret. Guitar and amp won't matter. Remember, Duane always sounded like himself whether he was playing a Les Paul through a Marshall or a Strat through a Twin. Hope this helps!
