    Lyrics:
    I was always working steady
But I never called it art
    I got my shit together
    Meeting Christ and reading Marx
    It failed my little fire
But it’s bright the dying spark
    Go tell the young messiah
    What happens to the heart
There’s a mist of summer kisses
    Where I tried to double-park
    The rivalry was vicious
    The women were in charge
It was nothing, it was business
But it left an ugly mark
    I’ve come here to revisit
    What happens to the heart
    I was selling holy trinkets
I was dressing kind of sharp
Had a pussy in the kitchen
And a panther in the yard
In the prison of the gifted
I was friendly with the guards
So I never had to witness
    What happens to the heart
I should have seen it coming
After all I knew the chart
Just to look at her was trouble
It was trouble from the start
Sure we played a stunning couple
But I never liked the part
It ain't pretty, it ain't subtle
    What happens to the heart
Now the angel’s got a fiddle
    The devil’s got a harp
Every soul is like a minnow
Every mind is like a shark
    I’ve broken every window
But the house, the house is dark
    I care but very little
    What happens to the heart
Then I studied with this beggar
He was filthy, he was scarred
By the claws of many women
    He had failed to disregard
    No fable here no lesson
    No singing meadowlark
    Just a filthy beggar guessing
    What happens to the heart
    I was always working steady
But I never called it art
It was just some old convention
Like the horse before the cart
    I had no trouble betting
On the flood, against the ark
You see, I knew about the ending
    What happens to the heart
I was handy with a rifle
    My father’s .303
    I fought for something final
    Not the right to disagree

its not depressing, I don't understand how just being a soul, with weather, is sad all the time?
We all go through emotions. It's a part of life.
Embrace sadness, thats what Cohen did. But he had other emotions as well. Like the rest of us.
He's letting us into his "closet", like King David in the Psalms.
Its pretty darn cool if you ask me!
To continue, sadness, like any common emotion we go through, is OK. As long as you don't stay there.
Everyone associates Cohens music with "depression"??? That in itself is sad!
So being a human with one emotion, is the only state one is in?
Cohens music gives me unspeakable Joy!
He was real with his words, never mincing them, never shying away from what he felt.
Wasn't meant to seem "sad", just real!
Not many people get real enough. This is why I find Joy in his music/poetry.
Cheer up. Life is about going through many things. Go through them. Get to the other side!

I remember being amazed in the 60's that so many local singers and musicians thought he was weird or didn't know about him at all, when I was learning Suzanne, Sisters of Mercy, Dress Rehearsal Rag and Priests. There was such a deep sorrow in his music, yearning for the same simplicity others enjoyed in their lives but seeing, thinking, feeling too much. If you listen to anything of his, listen to "God is Alive, Magic Is Afoot". The man was a philosophical lyric genius. We shall never hear his like again.

      @89474 Před 2 lety +20

Yes, sufferings help us get out of illusions.
Cohen was extremely sensitive and his painful experiences helped his soul make a resistance. It was necessary to detach soul from mind which leads us astray and connect with God's words to understand the truth. Saint Spirit is power to the soul. The only freedom and happines is in God. Through Jesus. He is the first, the strongest and the most high. Son of God. OBEDIENT . He accomplished :all commandments.
Then, no more sufferings, pure joy and happiness.
The wounds of Jesus heal us and cure us.
God bless his soul with utmost blessings.

    RIP Leonard 🙏

I am curious, what do you think it meant?

    • @fractiousperson303
      @fractiousperson303 Před 2 lety +30

That line is so striking and poignant, it takes me aback and gives me chills every time. I'm not sure what others or Leonard meant by it, to me it suggests a sort of mercenary aspect to making it as an artist, leaving behind friends and peers, as well as feeling trapped by that fame and celebrity, which seems to fit Leonard's retreat to Hydra. Or maybe the prison of the gifted is in the person so gifted or cursed with such intelligence and sensitivity as to be lonely and alienating and painful, even in obscurity, and being friendly with the guards means being able to play nice, be charming, and sort of fake being like other people to get along in life, and feeling like you're betraying your true self (the other prisoners?) in your social and professional life and its personae. It's a startlingly unflattering and sinister image. But it also harkens back to recurrent references to the Shoah/Holocaust on this pair of albums (especially prominently from "You want it Darker"'s refrain: "a million candles burning" and verse "They're lining up the prisoners and the guards are taking aim/I struggled with some demons/they were middle class and tame/I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim" and evoked within this own song's stark last couplet (a contrasting image of the poet and his father as partisan/Jewish rebels", ready to shoot those same guards.
But of course one of the major features of great art or literature is that it inspires different interpretations and I would like to see what other people think too.

    • @skabdussayeed3205
      @skabdussayeed3205 Před 2 lety +20

@@fractiousperson303 Thank you so much Ian for writing this detailed explanation. It seems like you have gotten the exact interpretation as I thought. I would stress more on 1st and 2nd explanation that you brought up. Yes, gifted people are hell lot different and 'cursed' with so much of intelligence and sensitivity as to be more and more alienated from society. They are immersed in their own world of thoughts and ideas to outwardly appear as strange and unusual. Normal people think positivity means you ignore and shy away from pains and agony of being alone. Truth is, brains in those gifted individuals work in a completely different frequency and doesn't match with the common people. So they feel alone even when surrounded by crowd. That's what Leonard Cohen meant I guess when he said 'In the prison of gifted'. But still you live in a society and want to be accepted , so you behave in an acceptable way to match the normal people's frequency. That's where the phrase comes " I was friendly with the guards".

He came over and asked if I wanted something to eat. As we walked away he turned to me and started talking and talking. Telling me important things I can't remember. (my father once came to me in a dream and did the same thing) After he finished talking he said it was time for him to return. I walked with him along the path....just like the one in the video and we talked together. Then I had to stop and he continued just like in this video. At the end of the path I saw a bright green field in sunlight. This video is phenomenal. Dianne V. Lawrence
