Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Very entertaining session. How do you come up with your session plan? As in determining what needs to happen, which cars are loaded, empty, etc. and which actions the industry is ready for, For instance having a few loaded cars that need to be pulled out and empties spotted in, etc. You mentioned it takes 3 loaded hoppers to end up with one DDG and one Ethanol which is a cool detail and adds a bit of industrial planning into the mix, not just randomly pulling and spotting cars wherever you feel like. Thanks Shane! It’s actually 4 loads of corn equals on load of DDG and one load of ethanol. I just learned that from research. I know which cars are loads and empties based on their position in the plant. It will probably make more sense in the next video. As the layout grows the operations will become more detailed. Right now things are pretty simple and easy enough that anyone can follow along and have fun. Keep watching! More to come!
I love this video. However.......... them boys at ADM either need to get a different switcher - like maybe an SW1500 (former CSX #1109?) from LTEX, or they at least need to replace the cab windows in that old Alco switcher. This is an HO scale layout, but I am an HO scale lawyer, and I see a very lucrative potential lawsuit against ADM for operating a locomotive with cab windows so opaque as those on that Alco. In HO scale, the settlement could be as much as $1.25! Thanks for another wonderful video. Post script: All this was in jest; don't anybody get their shorts in a wad. I'm no lawyer of any scale at all. Just having fun with the creator of a wonderful layout - one of my very favorites!
Haha! Thanks Mike! Actually, in sticking with the prototype, it’s a remote control unit. (I know I still need to add the remote lights). In real life, these types of facilities are extremely dusty and a unit that is remote controlled from a dude on the ground will have no reason to clean the windows. Plus it helps to hide all the electronics crammed in the cab.

Of course cameras make everything bigger than they actually are as this beautiful layout looks much better than 2'x8' How superb this is once again proving that one doesn’t need an extraordinarily huge layout to have incredible fun. This is simply gorgeous! Your weathering technique isn’t to be surpassed as i clicked on this video as that quite beautifully filthy ALCo SW-2 ( must buy more ALCo locomotives especially the S-1, S-2 more of my favourite RS-1 & RS-2) and that gorgeously weathered rolling stock! Brilliant, and I've subscribed.

i read model railroader as a audio file for the blind and send them to an outfit in colo. i just recently sent them your article about the seaboard central and it has me wanting to get back into model railroading again, something i aint had time for in a long time.
Who were the engineers on the S2 IRL for an ADM plant such as this? Were they seasoned professional railroad men near retirement who took an easy job? Were they men within the company trained to operate whatever switcher the plant had on hand to execute the moves? Either way, as railroading goes, it would be a great job. As model railroading goes, the flawless running, weathering, scenery and sound is simply a treat for the eyes and ears. The ProtoThrottle takes throttles to a whole new level. Thanks for the kind comment. Typically in a facility like this the engine is fitted for remote control. At some point I plan on adding the remote antenna to it. The individual controlling it would be just someone who is RCO qualified. At larger facilities where unit grain trains are received, the road units will often remain there with the cars and be used for unloading the train. In this case it is normally a retired engineer who works it as a part time job. Tim

There's a lot of interesting story writing that could be done around that Alco switcher. Perhaps the SC could be the contracted maintenance curator of the unit by ADM. In other words, it would have to leave every now and then for the shop with a "borrowed" SC unit switching in its place. Just some food for thought.
A borrowed unit could show up from time to time but I doubt the S2 would leave the property unless it is moving to scrap. In most prototype cases a mobile contract crew will make repairs on property.

Probably could. It’s a lighter product so the best use is in the larger capacity 4 bay hoppers. These cars are part of a shipper assigned pool that will always come back to this location for DDG loading after emptied.
Really like the sound of the S-2. Does the Seaboard Central come onto the ADM grounds to do setouts/pickups, or does everything go onto the pocket track and, say, siding 6?
Very nice! I am wondering though... You have obviously cut the pins off your Kaydees. How are you uncoupling inside the building? I didn't see any pause in the video! Also, I'd hate to be the switchman on that job! You don't give him much time to get the switched! Early quit?
Yes I cut the pins off all my couplers. They are unrealistic. Uncoupling is made with a Kadee uncoupling pick. There a lot in the video that gets edited out. For example a 20 minute long video like the part 3 doesn’t do as well as a much shorter video. Most people will tune out or won’t even click on to see it.

Normally the large capacity four bay cars haul it. It is lighter than corn and it often called feed ingredients on the Waybills. These loaded DDG cars will eventually go to another industry that I’ll be building on the layout in the future that makes animal food.
Yes on the tank track. The mills I work will have them where the tank cars are connected but not on the grain unloading areas. When we will enter their facility the conductor will have me shove in at a slow restricted speed. He will often notify the plant beforehand of our arrival so they can park their switch engine out of the way.
I have posted the track plan on the Seaboard Central Facebook page and also my blog on the MRH magazine website. But I can also post one on the community tab here, no problem.
