Confirming that these excellent instructions still work as of June 2024. Had to find a third-party download link for the vmware player (such as softpedia) since it looks like vmware is now part of broadcom and the download links no longer work properly. All subsequent steps are bang on. If TLC gives you a VIN slot error even though you've payed for a subscription, just close TLC and relaunch it (from the ACDelcotds website as per the instructions). Good luck all

Finally got my 2012 Volt reset. After filling the reservoir with coolant (it was a wee bit low) and I tried disconnecting the battery, recharging the 12v also, with no success. Had tried appointments with dealer but no one would take the car, 'too busy.' I showed my hometown mechanic your video, and he was able to reach the correct module to clear code. All with his expensive scan tool that he uses everyday. I don't think he hooked up to GM support. I don't think anything was 'reprogramed' but just codes cleared. I was shocked really. Service High Voltage Charging System error gone, CEL off.
Just got this done 11-14-22 and the car began accepting an electrical charge from the plug. : ) Very grateful.

MR. WATERMELON, YOU ARE MY HERO. I often fast lane up the (2017) Volt up a big tall SoCal mountain on the morning commute. Sometimes (my theory) when I get my battery hot enough by the rapid discharge, the ICE turns on to preserve battery levels, keeping it cool. I pushed it a little too hard and got the dreaded p0afa p1e00 codes a couple morning ago. Figured it'd cool off after a couple hours and I could wipe the codes with my OBDII scanner. WRONG. Volt would turn on but absolutely no drivetrain engagement. Would let me shift only to tell me 'shift to park'. Ruh roh. Amazon overnighted a VCX Nano, used your guide, $45 sub fee and I avoided a costly tow to the dealership who warned me it'd take a week to look at it. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Watermelon - thanks so much for taking the time to do the video and google doc. I would not have attempted this without your very thorough instructions. You saved me thousands of dollars. I was able to buy a used 2013 volt for half price because the dealer thought the battery was toast due to the Service High Voltage system warning and because the volt would no longer charge. I took a chance and bought the car, did some research on the forums and luckily came across your video and google doc. I spent the couple hundred dollars to buy the ACDelco subscription and VCX-NANO and a few hours later, the car was reprogramed and has run flawlessly for the past 2 months. No further warnings have come back, and the car charges fine every single time.
I really do appreciate that you put this together.
For people that are not sure whether to try it or not, I recommend you go for it. Follow the video and read the step by step instructions (I needed both together). It took me several hours (software downloads took a bit of time), and I was super nervous about reprogramming the car. I was worried I would brick it. But it all worked perfectly for me!

Thanks for this in depth guide. 8 months ago I fixed my 2013 using an old windows 7 laptop. So when my daughter's 2011 got its first charging error this weekend, I was dismayed to learn that there was a new application from GM and the process was much different! Here's what happened for me: I had a ton of trouble getting my VCX-NANO to be recognized by two different desktop PC's that I hauled out to my garage. I can't say if that's because of the version of VX manager I was using or if it's because I updated the device firmware to 1.9.0. I spent hours working on this. I even went back and tried to create the virtual machine like your directions stated. In the end, I went back to my old windows laptop and was able to finally get the ECU flashed using Techline Connect. It took many tries -- the program wouldn't accept the VIN I purchased through ACDelco until 24 hours later -- but eventually I got it. So, while the instructions and video suggest a Windows 10 machine with 8 Gig, I was able to do it with a 12 year old laptop.

Wow. I just read through your instructions which sent me to this video. Awesome instructions. Very well said. I'm just looking into the possibilities. I just bought cherry 2012 with 40,000 miles. Thanks! I'm assuming your Volt has the SHVCS message? When my Volt had the SHVCS error, everything still worked normally except charging. I got around this by clearing the codes with an OBD2 scanner before charging. This was only a temporary fix because the SHVCS error would always come back eventually. I ended up permanently fixing the problem by reprogramming the modules and it's been problem-free since. Hopefully that gives you some insight as to whether your car just needs to be reprogrammed or it's something more serious. Are you having other issues besides charging?

@@watermelon9459 I don't know. I literally just bought it about 40 minutes ago. Sitting in the car at the dealership now. Waiting for AAA to bring it to my house so I can start figuring things out. The original owner said he was driving up a hill when the electric battery was running out of miles. Like he does every day on the way home right where the engine normally starts on his way home instead of the engine starting everything just shut down. Now as I'm sitting in the car I see the dome light on and when I turn on the headlights the dome light dims considerably. The 12 volt battery at this point is definitely low. I don't know if it was low two weeks ago when he had it brought to the dealer. The dealer said the high voltage battery is under 200 volts

Watermelon, thanks very much for posting this. I got it to work for my 2012 Chevy Volt after the Service High Voltage system warning went on and it didn't charge. A few notes to help others doing it: For me the latest VX Manager software version didn't work, but the 1.8.4 included on the thumb drive included with the VCX Nano did. Also, I thought I had failed to upload correctly after completing both module reprograms as you mention, but then after about 10 minutes it started to charge and all the dash warning went away. Also of note is that I inspected my coolant tank for leaks and found none but topped off the coolant to be sure it wasn't slightly low. It seems crazy to have to do this much work to reset the code rather than being able to do it over OBD, but seems to be the reality with this year for the Volts. Cheers!

Cleaned entire computer and reinstalled windows 10 pro. Lengthy at almost 5 hours but worth it! This computer was sacrificial but no more! With the directions from the author, on my now clean computer, I installed the Virtual drive, followed directs to a T and bingo. 2012 Volt ecu’s are reprogrammed. The suggested Battery module flash took the longest, the HPCM2 was much quicker. I was so excited to go get my car State inspected… I forgot that I had to run the ICE for awhile, which clears the exhaust sensor errors. Dang, 21 bucks down the drain but I’m still happy sloppy. My garage told me to run her on gas and come back on Monday and he’ll reinspect and I’ve actually experienced this before, so my fault.
So anyone doing this, take your time, follow the directs step by step. I bounced to the video a few times, but clarity is bad on it and I didn’t have my vin registered yet, so his directs are 99% on, but the video as he says is not on those parts of it.

Thanks so much for making this! I'm watching and following the written instructions, but I hit an issue around timestamp 16:40 (step 10). When I try to make Techline Connect launch from the webpage, I have the "launch techline connect as admin" checkbox checked and I press the button, and the screen plays a brief animation, but nothing else happens. It doesn't launch the Techline program. And, if I try to enter my username and password after launching the program from the desktop, it gives me the message "unable to authenticate user. Please check your internet connection, proxy settings, or use any of the links above for troubleshooting". And of course the links above are just a message that Techline Connect is moving to a browser launch, and the link to the page I was at before.
It's incredibly frustrating, because this looks like the last step before I can connect the VCXNano to my car and read the actual error codes from my car. I don't know how GM or ACDelco think it's fine to release software that is this bad.

I flashed it twice and cleared DTC but am unsure of what to expect since it happened both times.

It’s different for you because you don’t live in the United States. If you want better pricing and access time, I think you can use a VPN and change your location to USA. If you don’t want to do that, I think you need the subscription for SPS2

Great work , I’ve followed all the step , but I clicked clear code at stage 12
After , I tried to follow step 13 and a error code e4399 pop up. And I was not
Able to finish . Any idea ?
    Thanks

I’m not sure why you got that error. Unfortunately, your best bet is to start over. Try following the steps as closely as possible. Were you able to successfully reprogram the BECM (step 12)?

      Thanks for your response ,
I was having the high voltage message so the car was only running on gas .

The Ampera is just a re-badged Volt so it'll probably work

Hi, thanks for all this great info, if someone has a blank laptop with nothing personal on it, would this procedure work without VMware?

I just answered my own question, this tutorial is great and also works without VMware if you don’t care about viruses in your computer, thanks again 👍

@@joelshopefullyhelpfulvideo3010 yes it would work but I'd recommend creating a full backup of its hard drive. Like a mirror image. That way if you screw it all up you can just pull the hard drive out and connect it as an external to another machine and copy the mirror image over. Much easier than reinstalling everything. I was screwing around with this last night & the virtual machine ended up getting a Trojan, computer fan started running at full speed everything getting hot Windows security was complaining and I was happy to ditch that virtual machine and start over.

If you have the GM vcx nano - do you just have to credit a ac delco account and pay 40 bucks to just update firmware?
Or do you have to license other paid programs?

    • @watermelon9459

You only need the $40 SPS2 subscription. You don’t need to license other paid programs. Do you just need to reprogram a module or are you trying to do something else?

4 more wasted hours on this junk. says windows is missing files. I give up, AGAIN, been trying on and off for almost 2 years. When you get to step 5 after a few hours, it will fail and say it is missing files and cannot install windows. Don't waste your time.
