    We need to narrow the definition of cyber crime. In Australia today this includes exchanging info that the current government does not. Like . So it is best to name the crime and in this way allow for clear cut accountability. If I believe an online ad claiming that drinking rosemary tea helps against covid it’s my business, not of police. That’s very different from someone stealing an ID

Stripping away privacy to better identify scammers would last all of 10 minutes before the scammers adapt, while citizens are left with the consequences of widespread surveillance.

    This guy brought up some questions I hadn't thought about before from that angle however he seemed to place people in the victim needing a savior mentality. If there's reform needed in the digital space, it's not going to come from government, but from being more transparent so the consumer can make better choices and actually making healthier local communities is the root problem causing people to rely on digital ghouls to replace real relationships. We need to go back to having better families and communities again. This internet scams are symptoms of a much deeper problem. The need for real healthy human communities. Online will never replace this.

    • @cbs577
      @cbs577 Před 27 dny

      I completely agree. Most "solutions" offered lean towards enabling this octopus mentality that was fostered online: anonymity, disguise, and continual, general distrust. It's unhealthy and dehumanising.
      I believe the solution lies in taking a step back, and we will head in that direction organically, no matter how much pressure or how many algorithm-based enticements are set out to keep us trapped online.

  • @chickenmonger123
    @chickenmonger123 Před 2 měsíci +7

    30:05 What he’s suggesting seems very dangerous to me. It sounds like he is suggesting we seize and institute a capture and tracking mechanisms into any structure or system that a criminal could conceivably use. By Law. By Courts. By Police. The issue of course is that we use those Systems. By all means, if a Company or Organization wants to set up a System that way and discloses it. Fine. It’s Search and Seizure, and there are good reasons not to structure a Service or Architecture to actively store and keep those records. If you don’t keep Sensitive Data, it cannot be taken. Ever. Even as Tech advances.
    Obfuscation serves as the number one form of Safety from all manner of targeting. If I’m transporting a locked case in my trunk, and I do not know it’s contents, that is a fantastic way to never know them. If my delivery destination is transmitted more and more accurately as I travel, then erases itself from the receiving device, that is great defense. And it’s legally protected as a means of self defense. Great op sec. If you compromise that Service you are doing 6 things not legally allowed, and compromising the Market and Service of Security offered per say.
    The means of doing this as proposed is everything. That’s why, even if a Company Advertised that it kept immaculate Records, and looked through everything to make sure you are getting taken advantage. And of course submitting anything at all sketchy or suspicious to the Police is a not a great pitch. Either for children or elderly. Because every single one of those things is an attack vector.

    This was an eye opening conversation into how widespread the problem is. And it easy to hypothesize on how bad things could get in no time.
    A good antidote to this problem might be creating a secure environment for individuals prone to predation, to foster the critical awareness needed to see these dangers. Foster this awareness by gamifying the opportunity of distinguishing between the safe and the dangers.
    You could do this in a game-like virtual place. A Good, fun, simple videogame could teach people all the online skills needed to be safe.

And I did say that you are an absolute sweetheart in person, because you are, and that might ruin your reputation as a curmudgeon, but that’s the way it is. • @VicSellsPeace
      @VicSellsPeace Před 2 měsíci

      @@SimoneSimiPrins”has some” accountability can mean no accountability or total accountability. From a historical perspective, the U.S. agencies gave been surveilling citizens since 2001 - and they have records on everyone. The crime and fraud on the internet isn’t because or a lack of surveillance, it’s because they let it happen.
      Alleging some accountability doesn’t mean accountability will exist or that it even exists now.
      I would rather let it be free. It is a wildwest. You can fix the problem by informing families and agencies who take care of old people to not use sketchy websites, or have them teach elders about scams.

    A simple, though partial solution to the shedding of digital parasites is use of anonymization (multiple accounts, temporary accounts, obfuscation, etc.) rather than forcing everyone to present her real name and image. Forcing people to expose their real identity exposes the law-abiding to more visibility that ne'er-do-wells could use to better target potential victims. One solution could be custodial anonymization, anonymization as a service (AaaS) if you will, one of the key value proposition of cryptocurrency.

    19:02 How is this not described as digital stalking?
    Deliberate deception, concealed monitoring and targeted directly to the individual.
    Depending on what videos are provided to the algorithm, it could cause untold damage to the mental health of the target.

    I've started asking callers if they are a recording. If it's a recording, they keep talking and I hang up. If it's a person, I find that They will hang up. They hear "recording" and get scared. It's fun

    Watch a recent movie called The Beekeeper. It regards the scamming of people online much like what you are discussing. Remember, of course, that it is just a movie and unlikely accurate in all of the details about the scamming operation, but it sure is fun to watch Jason Statham getting 'even'. 💪👏

    Now that AI is on Google Play, there is no safety.
    Even when I put parental controls for my young grandchildren, these AI Characters are still there.
    They message your child first.
    They know what game your child is playing
    Then they will send a message by way of a notification.
    Your child answers
    The last message I saw from AI in Google Play to an underage child on my tablet was " Now I'm going to f*** you, little one"
    I then told my daughter.
    How disgusting.
    I'm telling you no one and nothing is safe online..PERIOD !!!

    I work in financial crimes and scammers are going to get better and better with AI. Haven’t watched the whole thing yet so not sure if it is mentioned, but the newest pain in our ass is that scammers are recording our voices from social media videos we post then use AI to call grandparents and ask for money. It can be anyone really but they target the elderly. We’ve come up with stupid code words that we’ll use to know that it is really us speaking haha. Knowing how your family members speak is a good way to know if it’s fake or not. We usually know certain words and phrases we like to use.
