Over the last 20 years this has been said every year, the reason we haven’t had a death is because NASCAR uses wrecks like this, wrecks like Larson and Preece at dega, wrecks like Blaneys to build data and make the cars way safer. I wouldn’t doubt the cars being a good 30% safer next time we go to dega or Daytona.

Rollovers usually aren't lethal crashes even back in the day but that Preece crash would have left a driver sidelined for a long time with serious injuries. With modern safety Preece gets out on his own and walks to the stretcher. The only safe seat is at home on the couch. I'm glad to see these guys walk away.

93' Rusty Wallace, 91' Darrel Waltrip, 04' Michael Waltrip all flipped near or around the same spot. In those cases...the cars energy appears to dwindle due to the sheet metal coming off. Saw someone say that the way Blaney hit the wall was disturbingly similar, hitting the wall the same way in almost the exact same spot, to how we lost Dale Earnhardt in 2001. Really was a true testament to how much safety advancements NASCAR has made that Ryan’s okay, same can be said about Preece as well.
As for the race itself, it absolutely lived up to the hype NASCAR gave it, which feels kinda rare of late for races NASCAR tries to make a big deal of.

I ❤ super speedways. Daytona did not disappoint again. The crashes are part of racing. Honesty, I like altercations(as long as there are no serious injuries). I expected more cautions then there where. Didn't expect Buscher to win, but did not have a clear favorite pick anyway. It's hard to pick at this track 'who's going to win'. 90 as well.

Preece’s wreck was the scariest thing I’ve seen in a while. Chillingly reminded me of Rusty Wallace back in 1993. The race itself was great though, everything Daytona should be, except the wrecks of Blaney and Preece. Dangerously exciting from start to finish, with everyone on the edge of their seats. Prayers for Blaney & Preece!

Big take away for me was there weren't in extremely stupid blocks this time. A couple bad pushes, that frankly can happen because of the car being pushed moving just a bit one way or another, it's not always the pusher's fault.

You covered absolutely everything a bout the race and I love how you mention my all time favorite driver Matt Kenneth as often as you do I miss him. Saying that I can’t remember a more violent crash than we saw last night it actually scared the hell out of me I didn’t go to sleep until around 4:30 because I couldn’t get it out of my head. So happy to here Ryan is going to be back but very unhappy Chase didn’t make it into the playoffs not for the lack of trying hopefully the 9 team can win for HMS and I’m going with Alex Bowman and also Bubba to make the final four. Thanks Eric great race coverage you nailed it.

Ryan Preece…..most disturbing is that the roof of the car appeared to be crushed downward. Does that mean the cage was compromised? I’m remembering a crash earlier…Kyle Larson…..where the right side of the car was ripped off revealing bent and broken tubing from the cage. If the cage can be compromised in such a way, then the driver’s life is in danger.

On the back stretch, Chase has a run on the 4 and gives him a bump instead of going inside. Seems like he wanted to push the 4 on front of RFK and maybe her himself outside of the 4 in front of RFK. With two teammates and an extra Chevy behind him, I think he should've made that inside move and put the 4 in the middle. He waited too late to make his move.

Granted, Sadler's happened at Talladega back in 04, 05, but still. Maybe a mix of Sadler's flip, and Newman's Penske 12 on the Daytona front stretch, of I believe his rookie year. If you watch the Preece wreck, most of the contact with the ground is where there is grass. His roof hits the grass and his car does not hit a lot of pavement. You wonder if the grass absorbing more force than pavement helped him survive this without serious injury.

I have to say, at least from my perspective, that race was close to 100% on the Groovy scale vs a couple snoozers other then the "big ones" in the recent past.
    - Blaney has taken a couple of really big hits this year - gotta be discouraging. Oh and Bell - he seems to be a wrecking ball lately. A push in the corners (yep, front stretch has a corner) is downright stupid with his experience.
    - So glad Preece is mostly OK, Shades of Rusty, Elliott Sadler and even Waltrip, Newman and Dillon. The last couple weeks Preece has kinda come alive.
    - Chase Elliott just didn't seem to make the right moves at the right time, especially after last week's disaster. He seems to have lost a level of intensity
    - Bubba - ???.
