    This is good news for Canon RF APS-C users. Canon, as usual, refused to make anything but consumer-grade lenses for their APS-C lineup. Given that, it's perfectly reasonable for to open this up to companies that will make enthusiast and/or pro-grade glass for APS-C RF cameras.

      @davepastern Před 12 dny +2

      @@sydneylens I have too much invested in Canon gear to swap sadly. The thing is, Canon's menus are the best imho and also their button UI too. Nikon has their weird AF system that is just, well, weird. That would drive me crazy. Nikon and Sony need to up their UI game big time. Feature and spec wise, they spank Canon. Performance wise, they both do that too, although to be fair to Canon, the Nikon Z8 (direct competitor to the R5) is 3 years younger. Even then, Canon is only probably going to match the Z8 with the R5II - that's not encouraging. I have been saying for quite some time that Canon is not only behind Sony in the sensor wars, but falling further behind. Sony is toying with them. I can imagine Sony dropping a A1II with a global shutter at 50mp a month or 2 after Canon drops its 45mp BSI stacked R1 lol.

    I currently use a Sigma 18-50 EF adapted on my R7 and I'm pretty happy with it. If Sigma wants to give me a trade option, I'll be happy to test out their RF mount version.
    At the moment, though, all my glass is EF adapted, so I just leave the adapter on the body. If I start going back and forth, I could end up getting confused on what's where, and while that's definitely a me-problem, it's still a problem.

When does a ISO6400 image finally look like it was taken at ISO800? How about more bits per colour channel in RAW footage? When will there be an alternative to Bayer and XTrans like technologies which don’t require interpolation? Still have high hopes for Foveon, but it will likely have noise limitations.

    It's a good start (allowing 3rd party lenses). I'm not sure if I'll be buying any new glass for my R7 since getting an R6-MkII a few months ago. It's not a very big slice of the Canon pie for Sigma and Tamron to make APS-C lenses for Canon right now. Maybe if Canon comes out with an R7-MkII soon, but I just don't see a lot of Canon compatible APS-C lenses getting sold. I hope I'm wrong. I like Sigma and their quality for the money.

    From a business sense it makes sense for canon to hold off on allowing third party as they fill in their own lenses like who and try to recoup r&d costs asap. But it does have a few year paining consumers.
    The aps-c opening first makes sense since most people getting into the aps-c lineup are people just beginning into photography with a “real” camera, so they aren’t going to want to buy anything expensive. It makes sense for sigma and tampon to just into that field first.
    I’m sure canon will open up full frame in the next year or two.
    If they don’t it will spell more trouble for them more likely than not. Can’t be all greed all the time.

    • @simonmaduxx6777
      @simonmaduxx6777 Před 14 dny +1

      The problem with that also is that they didn't fill in anything. They pretty much made the worst versions of almost every lens they brought out. You couldn't really sell cheaper and slower lenses than what they possibly created for crop. Every lens got downgraded, the 24 to 50 is a lens meant for no one and is not even glass, the worst 18 to 55 ever.. they were trying to get awards for making trash products. Some of the lenses also use digital stretching to make a proper image.. so they cheaped out for the glass even on the cheap lenses.
      They'll probably make more money off of sigma selling lenses royalties that nobody buying their garbage lenses.
      Even worse they didn't bring out the 22 mm f2. Talk about super insulting to their customers. And then he talked it all off and just said it was a business decision in terms of keeping third party off.
      Whatever the Japanese version of wanker is, can an executives earn that title. Morons.

    I'm guessing the Canon 3rd party APS-C lenses can be used on FF set to 1.6x crop? My R3 would drop from 24MP to 9.3MP, an R5 would drop to 17.3MP. So maybe an idea for people with a FF that want one or two lenses that are only available in APS-C rather than buy an RF APS-C body just to get the cheaper lenses?. I just did some full Moon shots at APS-C crop as I'd have had to crop anyway, my R3 looking through my 9.25" telescope. I couldn't tell the difference between images using internal crop or software crop. Quite a few wildlife shooters use 1.6x too, and always seem happy with the results.

      I have this same question, what happens when you put one of these 3rd party APS-C RF-mount lenses on a Canon full-frame camera? I mean, both Canon's APS-C cameras and full frame cameras have the same RF mount. I'm guessing since the lens is designed for a smaller sensor it will clip the resulting image?

    Tamron had a great lineup of EF lenses, which you could have easily used on an RF mount with an adapter. The sad part is that they are not produced any more. Not even the great Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 IS.
    I would not call Sigma lenses cheap. They just cost less although they are sometimes better than the Canon versions. A Sigma lens also has the advantage that Sigma allows you to change the mount for a moderate fee. I do not see a reason to buy a Canon RF lens that will only work on Canon cameras with no options to convert it into an E-Mount of Z-Mount lens.

      Where does the Sony not produce good enough results? Canon, Nikon and Sony all produce excellent cameras it’s very easy to be seduced by apparent ‘better’ but ends up just being different. Billions of great images have been taken and will continue to be taken by cameras without eg. ‘global’ shutters.

      @@russellbaston974it’s the feeling for a lot of people that’s brought up this issue. When people switched from canon (or Nikon) to Sony, they lost their ergonomics and the feeling of the camera especially if you have larger hands. The feeling is different and some people don’t get used to it. Then there’s the system layout… that tends to be the biggest issue for people wanting to switch back to their old system. Sonys layout is a lot better now, but it’s still not as intuitive as most people would like to believe. There are some other things to, but overall that’s the reason why. There are times that people using Sony cameras don’t want to pick up their cameras and don’t feel inspired by their cameras. Believe it or not it’s the little things that Sony can do to improve that could make things better. Canon, Nikon and especially FujiFilm have better interfaces and pay more attention to connecting the photographer to the camera with the little things they do to make using their cameras easier.

    I have said this since day one. The Day that Canon allows 3rd party manufactures to start making glass for their RF system is the day they jump ahead of Sony. The only two things really seperating Canon and Sony right now is how big Canon continues to make their RF bodies. They are starting to get just as big as DSLRs and the ability to purchase lenses from so many other manufactures. Now that canon is starting that process, and will start allowing users to purchase more then the Canon RF glass with more available options, Canon is gonna be the King of the mirrorless world now. The one big thing that seperated them both was the amount of available and AFFORDABLE glass.
