Common Causes of a Constantly Running AC System
Is your AC running all the time without shutting off, or cycling on and off continuously? More than likely, there is a problem with the unit and there is good reason to be concerned.
Not only is it running up your electric bill, but it also means unnecessary wear and tear on your AC unit. Here are some of the most common causes of this problem.
Dirty evaporator coil. If the evaporator coil is covered with dirt and debris, it can impede with the cooling process, making the unit work harder to cool your space.
Frozen evaporator coil. If your unit is blowing warm air from the supply vents, in addition to running constantly, it may have frozen up. In this case, turn off your AC completely and call a professional right away to avoid further damage.
Clogged or restrictive air filter. Without enough air flowing over the coils, the system can's remove humidity and cool the air to set the temperature, so it keeps running when it shouldn't. Even if your air filter is new, you may be using one that's too restrictive for your system (such as one designed to remove pollen and allergens).
Low refrigerant. If you don't have enough refrigerant in the system, your unit can't cool the space. This could be a sign of a lead, and will require an HVAC professional to repair it.
Faulty thermostat. If your thermostat is not working correctly, the unit doesn't know to turn off - even when the temperature is reached.
Leaky ducts. If enough cool air escapes, due to cracks or loose joints, the temperature in your space never reaches the set point and the system will keep running.
Dirty, blocked, or cracked condenser. Just like the evaporator coils on the inside, the condenser coils on your outdoor unit also need to cleaned and inspected, possibly even more frequently since they are exposed to the elements.
Blower motor and fan issues. If your blower motor is not producing enough air for your system, or the fan is running at a low speed, that can cause the system to lose enough efficiency to make it run too much.
Incorrectly sized unit. Have you recently renovated your space or rearranged the layout without changing your air conditioner? It's possible that your unit is no longer adequate. A certified HVAC professional can help you determine your exact needs.
Fortunately, many of these issues can be taken care of, and even prevented, with regular maintenance.

A/C’s are designed to run all the time. They’re much more efficient running continuously. More energy is wasted every time they start up, that’s where the larger in rush of current is.

You didn't mention a worn contactor on the outside unit....a simple part that any homeowner can buy and change. 🙄
