    1957 our next door neighbor was a Boeing engineer on the new 707. Everyone on his team was awarded a new '57 Ford. His was the "woodie" trimmed red and cream nine passenger wagon with a rear facing 3rd row seat. Fun times. I loved that car and quietly cried when we moved several states away the next year. Great show. Nice details.

    When just a 7 year old kid, 1961-ish, the first car I remember belonging to my parents was a '59 Simca Aronde! It was pushed down a hill into some trees and wrecked by some hooligans and when shopping for a replacement, the choice was between a gorgeous yellow with dark red interior '53 two-door Ford wagon and a light blue '57 Fairlane wagon. Dad went with the '57. Although I've mostly had smaller and imported cars, I still remember that sweet '53!

LOL!! I also work on full size cars and have been for close to 40 years. They go hand in hand. Again thank you Steve

    Way back in 1959 when I was 3 years old I still remember going to the local Ford dealer with my oldest sister ( 20 yrs older ) to trade in her 1953 Chevy for a used 1957 Ford two door that was blue & white. She had that until 1963 when her and her husband traded it in on a new Chevy II wagon. Even as a little kid cars were fascinating to me.

    The AMT kit always fascinated me as a kid because I always knew there had been more to it originally.
    Round 2 reissued this kit about two years ago. They restored some absent parts when they issued that one, using the box art Steve shows at 2:07. But that's the 1969 release when they added the gasser options. To do that they eliminated some of the parts from the original issue which came stock-custom-stylized (and probably a milder drag version). If you've ever wondered why there's extra bullet tail lights and bat-wing tail lights, it originally offered three options for custom front and rear treatments. One rear treatment was a rolled pan and Edsel wagon tail lights. But the gasser version lost the base for those, replacing it with the injector manifold. Another rear treatment was a long extended tail piece that had to be molded in with putty. That one used the 59-cad style bullet lights.
    I have one that I built with the extended tail, up front I used the pods for vertical quad lights over the rolled pan, I got it to paint and that's about where I ran out of steam. They gave you the stock nose, inserts with quad lights sort of like a '58 Ford, a rolled pan, a set of pods that went over the pan and had vertical quad lights, and then an entire second front end piece that molded in like the tail did.
    For years this kit came just like the gasser version, with just one custom option but it kept the wild interior with the console and kitchen table style seats. They were molded in blue for most of this time. Then for some reason in the 1990s they updated it with modern custom wheels and did away with most of the custom parts. This version restores it to the full 1969 release and possibly some of the 1963 parts - I never have been able to get my hands on one to go through it. I see the door web they added a piece up to the roof, that was never there before. Still a hole on the chrome tree below the bumper though.
    I should just do a response video on this and show the original box and versions of this kit. I was able to pick up a vintage built and painted model a few years ago that came with an original box.
    AMT also has a custom parts pack that is the custom interior from this kit, the seats, console and I don't know what else, but in chrome. They're pretty cheap, I have meant to tack a couple on an order and keep forgetting.
    Revell's 57 Ford is even crazier, it went from a station wagon to a chop top Ranchero when it was reissued. I remember building one in the late 1980s, they did a "Saintz" custom car series and included the Ranchero version. I want to say the body sides are molded separate from the roof and upper body.
    Round 2 does some strange stuff, they dumped a bunch of these kits at Ollies Outlets who proceeded to sell them for $15 - less than what it costs your hobby shop to get one. Of course, one store here got them and somebody else beat me to them.

    • @CycolacFan
      @CycolacFan Před 2 lety +3

      The Revell Country Squire four-door wagon appeared in 1957 and indeed had a multi piece body, there was an un-chopped Ranchero version in 1960 (doors were left too short since it was a cut down wagon) and a couple of reissues before the chopped one appeared. Don’t think it’s been reissued since 1987…?

    • @SteveMagnante
      @SteveMagnante  Před 2 lety +6

      Thanks for watching and THANKS for your detailed history lesson on this kit. It is true that original releases, then the subsequent re-releases are rarely the same. I'm with you on the unfortunate fact AMT bothered to ADD some silly generic custom wheels in the 1990's BUT dropped the much more useful custom body parts. On another tack, I've heard that the custom tail light treatment replicates a CANADIAN Ford model. I haven't pursued this as fact but somehow remember seeing an article in Scale Auto Enthusiast stating that a Canadian Ford "Meteor" gave its tail light design to one of the AMT kit's custom options. Just one of the thousands of reasons I find model cars and model car collecting / building so fascinating. "The little ones help sell the big ones". Thanks again, Steve Magnante

    • @CycolacFan
      @CycolacFan Před 2 lety +1

      @@SteveMagnante the Meteor part in the kit was the optional custom grille, though it only included the front piece and not the sides. You’d also have to alter the side trim to produce a convincing ‘57 Meteor but it could be done.

      The hole in the chrome tree is probably for suspension parts. I have an older release molded in blue that features chrome plated rear axle/leaf spring halves as well as the front suspension crossmember and center link. I was going to do this one as Smiler Grogan's car in It's A Mad (x4) World but with the neat chrome bits in this kit I picked up another later release for the movie car and will do this one as a street rod.

My favorite car today would be a mint 57 Fairlane 500 two door hardtop in Dresdon blue and white. No fender skirts or continental kit! As much as I would love to have the factory Paxton supercharger.........a 312 with 4V and automatic would suit me just fine!

    I have the Fireball Roberts 57 Ford, that I have yet to build. I live about 20 minutes from Tavares, Florida, the birthplace of Robert Glenn (Fireball) Roberts. The main reason I haven't started it is because I want to paint the car in the 2 tone livery of the era. My paint skills leave much to be desired. My airbrush skills are improving, so once I finish the Don Nicholson 62 Chevy Impala I'm currently working on, who knows? Thanks Steve for the awesome video!

    Hi Steve great video brings back memories as a teenager I worked with a guy who only restored and drove 50s Fords. As a teenager I was definitely the only one who had seen more 57s than most of my teachers and as a teen in the 80s I drove a 59' Ford Fairlane with Galaxy trim, chrome fender skirts etc. Black with red and white interior. The high school parking lot was cool with the 5.0 Mustangs and Iroc's but when the old 59 pulled in, it was the Diamond in a goat's ass. Had to park on the highest point because that's where the full size cars had room to park with the "compact only" parking becoming a thing. Of course I was made fun of driving a 30yr old car but lots of car guys loved it and they nicknamed it the Batmobile. Come the weekend tho you could pile 8-9 people in it and the party didn't start until the party arrived in the 59. Thanks again Steve...namaste

    This brought back memories of my AMT '56 Crown Vic "StripFowl" 1/25 model. I built it as a drag car, of course. I was probably 10 or 11 when I got it. After building it I tried to make it a "shorty" like guys had done with the tri-five Chevy wagons by removing doors. My execution was horrible and I made quite a mess of it. All good fun and great memories.

    [quote] "Bob-O, that 1961 kit NOT made of acetate, it is styrene--Chemical Formula-C6H5CH=CH2, which is the precursor to Ploystyrene. The tires were Plasticized PVC. The kit is very smooth for the simple reason that tool was NEW when that kit was produced and in very good condition."
    What are your thoughts on that?

      Thanks for your reply. I couldn't imagine not painting my models. It is the most frustrating, but ultimately the most rewarding (when it turns out right) part of the build process. However, it does extend the process to weeks or months 😒

    The 57 fairlane has the ugliest headlights in automotive history. The Edsel is a better looking car.
