I really think that's not true. The audience "knows" Joker's origin or at least what we want it to be. Oddly, the fact that he keeps it secret doesn't really change how we all feel about the character.

53eric53 Well, the people may just think that nothing's going to happen to them, or most of these supervillain shenanigans may only happen to a small portion of the people in Gotham. Either way, Gotham isn't actually as bad as we think, as we only see the action that happens, and not the daily lives.

The Joker has no true origin and never will. He's even stated that. He's like deadpool. He's fully aware he's in a comic book and that he is a fictional character. He knows the universe keeps getting retconned, he's also stated that. That's why he's not really insane, but rather hypersane. He knows what he does has no true repercussions at all and he knows batman and him are locked in an eternal struggle against each other because the reader wants it. He's also alluded to that.
That's why the joker is so scary. He knows and he doesn't care because it is pointless to care. The comic book characters themselves have no free will of their own, his universe has no true meaning other for us to enjoy. Hence scary.
I think you're onto something. The Joker is a twisted comedian, an entertainer, who knows more than Shakespeare himself, probably, that "all the world's a stage", and the world he lives in is only a work of fiction meant to entertain an audience. So he plays his role to the hilt, and bemuses us on many different levels - our humorous side because the Joker is actually pretty funny; our sense of excitement because of how he twists the plot; and our primal, dark and more evil nature, a sense of free-spirited nihilism and chaos.
TL;DR The Joker knows his role is to entertain the masses, and does so like no other comic book character can.
Amane Mizuhashi The weird thing is that the consensus for Deadpool, a LITERAL ASSASSIN, is that he's fucking hilarious. On the other hand The Joker, a LITERAL CLOWN, is arguably the most deranged thing in comics. Out of interest, I'd like to see Joker in major Crisis-esque events for shits and giggles. Actually, there might be a fan-fic for that.
+Silas Wu That's a good point! I've read a tonne of DC crisis-level comic events, and I don't think Joker's ever been involved in any of them. He does appear occasionally, like in Crisis on Infinite Earths, where he and Batman are the first to see the Flash's strange appearances, and in Infinite Crisis, where he's told that he can't be a member of the Society of Supervillains because he's impossible to control, but he's never been involved in any major way.

Starkiller Studios Although its no longer exactly canon. I think so too. Even in the Zero Year story arc the Red Hood gang leader is always smiling and causing chaos much like Joker would. And just most encounters with Joker end he too is seemingly dead but never is it revealed who he was.

Not a fan of Immortal Joker. The thing that made Joker so scary for me is the idea that anyone could be the Joker. My neighbor, my Professor, a complete stranger, my girlfriend, my family, or even me. ANYONE could be the Joker from just one bad day. THAT'S what makes him so scary. The fact that with just one bad day even I could go insane. .. But, nope, just throw all that physiological torture and evaluation out the window. Apparently it's not crossing the line that separates Batman from becoming the Joker himself. No. It's freaking SUPER POWERS! Joker's WHOLE ENTIRE argument with Batman about all it taking is One Bad Day is now completely pointless, because it wasn't one bad day... It was Effing Super Powers.

Alphamega Zulu I'm not sure what qualifies as canon when it comes to the DC universe. The New 52 is a reboot of Batman so I'm pretty sure it is canon but in a different universe. In other words this shouldn't have any connections to the old comics. It would be best to look up what DC said themselves. They do alot of crazy stuff so I'm not sure what is and isn't canon off the top of my head. I know for a fact that the Killing Joke is canon so if they did make this canon I'm not at all sure how this would fit together if it all took place in the same universe.
DC is confusing man lol the New 52 though was meant to be a reboot of Batman so maybe it's canon in the new universe.
Casshern Even more confusing is that Alan Moore said The Killing Joke wasn't canon for years and that DC just made it canon because it was so well known. So things that aren't canon can just be canon if DC says so one day.... It's super weird like that. And confusing if you're not an expert at comics.

The version that is shown in the killing joke is the best possible origin for the Joker. It combines all previous versions into one perfection.

Penny Rogers I prefer the Heath Ledger origins too but the new 52 Joker is really creepy overall. Read Death of the Family if you haven't, it's awesome and there was one specific line that literally gave me goosebumps: Gordon says to a friend of his that he has hidden the last pack of ciggarettes somewhere in his house were noone would fond them. In the next scene Joker breaks into the GCPD and says: *Oh Jimbo, I'm just trying to get a laugh but you HIDE things.. like that last pack of smoles where noone would find them, on the ironing under your bed, I like to lay there some times and here you sleep... the sad things you say... I think that this origin is weird. To me, joker works better as a man who has completely lost his grip on sanity, who does what he does for unknown reasons. This ghost story stuff is a cool concept, but I prefer joker to be mysterious, and human.

Dick Drizzle Well, think about it like this. This is the main storyline for the Batman series. How did you feel at the beginning of this story? I thought "Are they changing the origin story of the Joker?" As the stories went on, the concept origins became more and more convoluted. At the very end of the story the most likely possibilities became a false rumor as well. Instead of adding an origin story, they subtracted which is even more interesting. I think you need to understand what DC stands for... "Detective Comics." What's better than a good mystery? One that can never be solved.

This Joker origin story has really grown on my since I first read it.
The joker I knew have been long gone for quite some time. These guys are kind of trying a little to hard to make the joker creepy. It works in the levels of him being a sadistic monster, but I have to ask a question. Why would he bother putting time and effort into doing this? It doesn't really hurt Batman in any way.

Has no one realised that he is the original comic book Loki. He's much closer to norse mythology in that he creates chaos and has taken many forms, from a red hood wearing crook to a comedian to a war veteran and most importantly a serial killer
Sorry, but Joker being some supernatural entity is downright horrible. I mean, he's never really had a clear origin, but this one is terrible.

The reason I was a Joker fan because the Joker felt like he was sort of relatable. He's not some sort of superhuman or immortal, he was just a mortal, like batman. I prefer Alan Moore's interpretation of the Joker orgin better
