  • The massive dreadnought battleship SMS Markgraf was scuttled at Scapa Flow on 21 June 1919 - as the 74 interned Imperial German Navy High Seas Fleet warships scuttled en masse to avoid the British seizing them should the Armistice, that ended the fighting of WWI on 11 November 1918, break down.
She is one of three Konig-class battleships lying on the bottom of Scapa Flow today - and probably the most intact.
She lies upside down in 45 metres of water

fun video....dove her back in 2001, fond memories! One of the Seahorse salvage divers (circa 1978/9 ish) spent this past weekend at my house in Houston and we laughed over stories about their efforts on the Markgraf and other wrecks...Thanks, Andrew

Thanks, Andrew - the salving in the 1970's is full of interesting stories. I was introduced to Dougall Campbell who ran the salvage work from 1971 to about 1977 and he gave me lots of good information about those days, which added a full 37 pages to Dive Scapa Flow when I incorporated them all.
