- Cyclocross is great fun and Tom and Simon love riding CX, so we thought we'd show Matt how to ride 'cross and enter him into a race!
Follow GCN on CZcams: gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN
To get Matt off to a flying start we ran through the changes that you need to make from your normal road riding position and bike set up to get him ready for cyclocross. This includes looking at bar and stem adjustments, tyre pressures and saddle height.
We also run through basic cyclocross technique to make sure that Matt will be able to keep his bike moving as fast as possible downhill, on the flat and whilst climbing.

i feel like you guys are experimenting on different editing techniques on this video and i am not dissapointed
0:47 that dude in the background tells me everything I need to know about cyclocross.
The editing in this is spectacular, the ability to make it seem like Simon and Tom are in the same place at once is magic!
At roughly the 3:00 minute mark my LSD kicked in as a tiny rider rode directly at the camera in extreme slow motion while the two dudes discussed technique. Very clever for a visual display of technique but it's really, really disconcerting for some reason...lol. Nice video, guys! :)
M. Ray 5:25 too
I've clearly been around racing cars too long as i was trying to fathom out the connection with a locking diff...
😂😂😂
Tripped me out!
Matt falling over trying to do a bunny hop should be included as the intro to all your videos.
I've been noticing some improvements on your editing skills. The Aero/Climbing bike morphing featured recently was pretty impressive, and the slo-mo split screens featured here are smart and pretty elegant and effective. Chapeau guys.
Thanks Andre, we've been working on upping our game and have some really nice edits coming soon too :-)
I think this may be one of my favorite segments yet. Great video editing with the Simon and Matt talking, then having Simon or Tom riding on the side. GCN always keeping us entertained.
The first video that got taught me about starting cross. 4 year later, four seasons of cyclocross later and I still watch it as a refresher. Proper good video
There is a ghost at 5:13! How appropriate for a Happy Halloween.
Took a few views to find but looks one or two people walking a dog or two. They were probably edited out because too distracting in the background.
saw a guy on a cross bike while mountain biking some trails before I know what cross cycling was and I had no idea what this crazy road biker thought that he was doing.
"In their day" and the reaction was beautiful comedy!
Love Tom was running in the background!!
Wow guys, u just pushed the limit with this video. Great editing + the dialogue between you two make things much more entertaining. Congrats!
Loved the shot where simon is in the shot twice at the same time, two Simons - that's something Dan must've only dreamt about!
That is PERFECT!! OMGosh...you guys nailed it with that double tap mount and immediate crash at the end of the video! Thanks!
0:50 bahaha! Tom in the background
Beautifully shot. Favorite
Starts great and ends great! Good luck with it Matt!
Wonderful tips and great cinematography, Loved the split slow mo shots.
This will be a good series. Tom was killing it, Lasty for the win!
Oh man I do love these videos, always instructive but more than that, a laugh as well, keep it up guys, and I agree with the comment below about the production and editing, keep it up and keep em coming.
I practiced dismount and remount with my GF last night. It was awesome!!! Thanks GCN!
Fat Bike Freak oh.
She offered her honor. He honored her offer. And so it went throughout the night... honor, offer... offer, honor... ;P
Totally cool on that split screen. You guys really do put a-lot of work into making these videos, thanks.
Thanks so much for this cyclocross series lads. I'm investing in a cyclocross bike so I can do more than just ride on the road. This series will help me a great deal. :)
The attacking scene at 3:04 is some pretty slick editing It looks trippy. I like!
Please do more CX this year!
Excellent! Thanks.
This looks like Ashton Court. Really fun trails to practice on there.
Amazing edit here. Great info too, thanks!
cant wait to see the dismount and remount!!
This video series is still epic
nice, cyclocross looks fun!
The split screen effect is awesome.
I love how Lasty is just running in the background at about 50 seconds in...
love the video editing!
I adore your videos and split screen slo-mos:)
Is it just me or is Matt splendiferously awesome?
the bollocks at the beginning was one of the best moment from all your videos ever haha!!
Can't wait for dismounting and mounting video :))!
Very cool :D
Omg your a cyclist aswell love your videos bro when ever you in Los Angles California and Whant to explore urban cycle cross contact me.... heads up I'm a huge fan of yours
What are you doing in a GCN comments section? This is a crossover I never knew I needed! 😂😂😂
Matt falling over that log is still one of the funniest things i have seen.
Looking forward to the dismount/mount video! LOL!
4:34 Simon you're riding like a boss in this slo-mo - mouth completely closed, like you're making no effort. Proud of you mate.
Oldie but a goldie
nice vid :D
...and finally Tom and Simon together in one
are the cassette's different from a road bike for changing gear under tension ? , love the split screen slow mo btw :)
Nope, same cassettes as a road bike. Glad you like the split screen too :-)
The split screens are awesome!
i love Lasty running in the field behind Matt and Sy.
cant believe this was 6 years ago. i remember watching this the day it was released
Great introduction to cyclocross, thanks for the inspiration. We shared on EuropeZigZag.
Waited until the last ten seconds to talk about the most important thing in Cyclo Cross.
Deciding when to, and how to, get on and off the bike without slowing
down too much.
Kieth Mernickle (champ of yesteryonk) told me this.
It makes sense really, momentum is
handy. Saves a lot of energy.
Cleats and toeclips when I was at it! So much easier now with PB peddles.
The video editor is insane! I mean awesome.
Top tips : cyclists - , recreate the mountainbiking of your youth , by riding an overtall geared , underbraking , boneshaking cyclocross bike.
Ha , Yea. Good vid.
I love mine . Seriously. I got a 2nd hand CAADX last year. Consequently rode the MTB twice. The most fun.
Road / offroad mix. Perfect.
Liked it so much , just bought a new one. CAADX SRAM Rival.
I'm gonna smash it.
At least the brakes work.
Tim.
Must Have
3:49 Wow that was a nice little editing trick you pulled there.
nice edit!
0:49 ha ha Lasty!!
People of GCN! Please team up with several CX bikes and compete with the gentlemen of GMBN on XC bikes. This would help me with the struggling decision of which one to acquire.
Love your show, keep on!
I got a specialized tricross for super cheap. It needed TLC. Lots. It had creaks all over, and needed a tune badly. By watching vids and going to a few websites it runs like an absolute champ and is very quiet.
The ride: OOOOH lawdy lawd I love this bike. I came with 38c tires at first, and they were cheap, heavy, stiff. Basically everything you DON'T want in a tire, and they were better than fine for blasting 20 miles on the weekends, but more importantly I was able to run through the broken glass in the city.
I switched to 28c 4 seasons, and they are great in their own way as well. I just did a bunch of commuting and even a bit of some trails where I was sure I would wash out, but I just didn't. The slightly slack geometry did its thing, and I was smashing through the trails of Golden Gate Park at speeds I would never imagine on a pure MTB or a pure road bike. The road bike would be too sketchy, and the MTB too heavy at the same pricepoint. The only bikes that I personaly would be able to ride that fast on the same terrain would be like a cyclocross or gravel bike, or like you said a cross country bike.
I used to ride mostly single track with a hardtail, and now that those trails are not directly out of my back door the tricross shines. I think it's in this series where they say what I am trying to say, and it was something along the lines of: A cross bike makes a specific type of riding more fun than it would be on a mountain bike, and more fun than it would be on a road bike. To me it's Semi-flat terrain where it is necessary/beneficial to have bigger than 25c tires that a cross bike makes the most sense.
cross country bikes philosophy as explained by gmbn is that they are designed to be as lightweight as possible to FLY up the hill, and to survive the downhill. Meaning cross country bikes are built for offroad, yeah, but climbing and downhill on rough roads is where they would be more beneficial. What do you really need front or rear suspension for on a flat gravel road?
For me the cross bike seemed like it was going to be a better fit, and I had the same question. It all came down to what I saw myself doing. I have the finesse and patience to make it down anything with less than say a 2-3 ft. mandatory drop, or stuff that is just way too steep. I also have the physical ability to ride long rides on the road. The only bike that lets me do both decently is the cross style bike. Keep in mind my bike isn't REAALLY a cross bike, and is more of a touring geometry bike marketed toward people like myself. I totally recommend it, and I don't think I would ride a cross country bike half as much living in San Francisco.
Hope that helps, and you get the bike of your dreams
That's easy. It depends on 2 things.
Where do you ride?
Do you excel more on pedaling or bike handling?
Each type you're considering are the best at their own specialization.
jimnyfuchs sooo wich one did you get
Goodluck man! Just started this week. Noob for life! Haha
GCN seems to like top 10 lists, and so here is my top ten want to see in the future:
1. Flat bars vs. Drop bars: As a daily San Francisco commuter that has discussed this topic among other riders I can tell you some feel safer in traffic with flat bars, and others feel like drop bars make their commute soooo much easier that you may as well just get used to it. I would love to see a video that addresses some of the comfort issues one may have with traffic in general, but also one that talks about bike fit for commuting.
But dont stop there! No. Might my cyclocross-ish frame benefit from flat bars in certain situations? Why don't you take a look at the benefits of each, and discuss some ways in which each style may compromise to suit specific needs.
I really just want to see you guys race the mountain bike "boys" again...that's why it's my #1
2. Long Ride Safety: This is one that I really can't believe hasn't been done yet. What do I bring and how to train for a 50 mile ride was discussed, but what I am talking about is the logistics of going on longer rides more and more often. How can people be smart about the way they plan their rout in case of emergencies? Should they have multiple backup plans?
I grew up runnin cross country. I have not always been the wisest about letting people know where I was running when I ran 80 miles a week, and I know many of us do the same bicycling. What can we do to be smart about our overall safety on a 50+ mile ride? GPS? Phone apps? breadcrums?
3. Top ten "Hacks/Bodges": of the month? Year? All time?
I don't know, but some sort of re-visit scenario may be fun as well. What are those same people coming up with these days?
4. What retro styles do you guys and the pro peleton miss? Obviously many things get better with the next version, but sometimes we have to face it...the original was just plain better. Other times we may have it in our mind that certain aspects of our sport were better, and we're just getting old and nostalgic. Some aspects were just better for teem moral, sportmanship, and some things may have been better only for the fans, OR only for the riders.
Next video: What are the things that we can also look back at and say "Good Riddance"?
5. Ways to win cool stuff from bike companies, race teams, and from GCN. Ya know, like bikes and waterbottles n stuff.
Cheers guys.
really cool shot at 5:10
Lol Tom running with the bike in the background.
3:14 nice editing :)
Hey can you all make a video talking about the general tech of CX. For instance, width of tyres/type of tyres, why a cx bike vs a MTB, disc brakes vs canti brakes. This would help a ton.
This is the most intelligent slo-mo ever since Max Payne.
Atm I'm doing cyclo cross on my mtb with cx tyres on it I have done two races both were enjoyable but it was hard on an mtb I'm getting a cx bike now though hopefully a big improvement
I have a Specialized Sirrus pro 08' and enjoy riding on the road. I am now considering a new bike and I've always said that my next bike should be a road bike although I am very concerned about the dreadful conditions of our british roads. Last week someone suggested I consider the the Tricross bikes. I should like to know peoples opinions of these bikes when being used mainly for road use... or should I just go for the normal road bike and hope our roads improve??
Hey GCN, big fan here.
But could you please (!) in addition to imperial Units of pressure include bar (or atmospheres) as well, thanks a lot !
I run over 100 psi on my hybrid (looking to get shot of the thing ASAP for a cyclocross).
I like my bike to feel as much like my car as possible... stiff and a slight touch of oversteer.
XD took me a while to realise, but the video's are overlapped and then slowed down depending on which it is, is it not?
That's how you got two slow motions and one normal speed during the first demonstrations, isn't it?
Last running in the background :)
3:48 Epic editing!
..adobe premiere?
I agree on my fellow commenters that the shot at 3:18 is amazing!
I'm thinking about getting a GT Grade Sorra for casual cross and gravel riding. Is there anything better for that around the $800 range?
nice effect with the biker in the background moving in slow
I use a CX for commuting, how many PSI is "best" ? :) Mostly riding on the road.
GCN should cover MTB too!
0:51 stolen bike!
LMAO
is a specialized diverge a1 a good road bike but also for cross
Looking at the trials i would think a nice 29er hardtail XC bike with 2 inch tubeless tires would be much faster. You gain 3kg in bike weight but you could grip up the hills, grip in the corners and fly down the hills(due to faster braking).
that shot! 03:04
whats the perfect PSI for road biking on a nice sunny day?
What about just using a light weight 29er MTB?
Nope.
Matt and coffee is like pizza and cola together!
Si was doing gravel biking before it was cool.
i spent the whole time looking for the seam where the two clips were stitched together...completely forgot to pay attention to the cx talk :p
next thing we will see Matt on a XC MTB :) perfect
This video makes me feel less bad for making my "Frankenbike", meaning converting my hybrid to a cx bike.
This is the same place I took my cross bike first time out. What are the odds?
What kind of specialized cross bike does tom have
The 40psi is that for tubeless tyres?
Well it's easy when you can ride in slow motion like that. How do you do that?
Tom and Simon together on a video? wow
special visual effects.
What race is it? Is it the dirty kanzas?
is a road frame stiff as a cyclocross frame?
So now we know you have a new filming/editing technique showing a rider in slow motion edited into the main clip. A more subtle use would of made the effect more dramatic though.
At 3:47-4:00, is the guy on the right side of the screen in slow motion? xD
Guys, what is the difference between CROSS and CYCLOCROSS in sports? I saw in competitions only CYCLOCROSS bikes such in this video...
What about CROSS? It has shock absorber, but CYCLOCROSS doesn't
I am owner of cross Bergamont HELIX 5.0, and I really dont know what is it!!???))
I really appreciate and love your videos! But, gentlemen, all countries are metric (exept just a few square ones). Please mention also the values in units all people do understand, e.g. bar or Pascal (Newton / squaremeter). Thanx a lot and keep on!
A cyclocross bike does me fine for commuting and road riding.
Clear violation of Rule #82 // Close the gap. Whilst riding in cold and/or Rule #9 conditions replete with arm warmers, under no circumstances is there to be any exposed skin between the hems of your kit and the hems of your arm warmers. If this occurs, you either need to wear a kit that fits you properly or increase the size of your guns. Arm warmers may, however, be shoved to the wrists in Five And Dime scenarios, particularly those involving Rule #9 conditions. The No-Gap Principle also applies to knee and leg warmers with the variation that these are under no circumstances to be scrunched down around the ankles; Merckx have mercy on whomever is caught in such a sad, sorry state. It is important to note that while one can wear arm warmers without wearing knee or leg warmers, one cannot wear knee or leg warmers without wearing arm warmers (or a long sleeve jersey). It is completely inappropriate to have uncovered arms, while covering the knees, with the exception of brief periods of time when the arm warmers may be shoved to the wrists while going uphill in a Five And Dime situation. If the weather changes and one must remove a layer, the knee/leg coverings must go before the arm coverings. If that means that said rider must take off his knee or leg warmers while racing, then this is a skill he must be accomplished in. The single exception would be before an event in which someone plans on wearing neither arm or leg warmers while racing, but would like to keep the legs warm before the event starts; though wearing a long sleeve jersey over the racing kit at this time is also advised. One must not forget to remove said leg warmers. 16
True Dee, but it's actually far more pro to have such skinny arms that your arm warmers won't stay up.
Lol
Very true.....I'll never look that pro!
