Actually, it is not curry, cocunut milk with turmeric, onion, chillies, no curry powder & spices involved, that cuisines we called 'Masak Lemak'...that fried thing that you eat is called Tempeh, made from fermented soybeans & deep fried...
that is salted egg and you suppose to take a little bit and mix it with rice. maybe it's not too salty that the taste didn't shock you. the same applies if you eat salted fish in order to reduce the saltiness. in short, when we eat rice, always mix the side dishes in one scoop with the rice
That were not curry you were eating. As for us Malaysian, curry means red gravy. If it was yellow gravy we called it masak lemak. And for your info the ingredients are different between curry and masak lemak.

To enjoy and appreciate Malaysian food do some research on how to eat and what to eat. Unlike western food you need to mix the gravy with the rice, add the protein and eat as a mouthful or spoonful. That way you get the full flavor of the food and appreciates the unique taste of Malaysian food.

You eat it the wrong way! You should hv just mixed a small portion of the salted egg in every mixed scoop of rice, duck meat curry & veggies. Almost 90% of Malay/Indian rice meals are to be eaten that way i.e. mixed of few little portions in each scoop.
