- Here's Ten Years After (Alvin Lee-guitar/vocals, Leo Lyons-bass, Rick Lee-drums, Chick Churchill-organ) doing a rehearsal in the studio in Germany, 1969.
They start off with "I can't keep from crying", then go into a blues tune "Woke up this morning" and after a break do "Woke up this morning" take 2. Finally Alvin plays a little to himself.

The rest of the band is rather relaxed, laid back.

True legends of the 60’s and 70’s! What incredible memories come flooding back to my teenage years of and uncomplicated time grooving to great blues. RIP to the best guitarist i have ever heard. A tight band so easy to listen to and smile with amazement at their skills.
I am 73 Saw them at the Royal Albert Hall & Isle of Wight in 1970 Greatest band of all time.
Was at Wight as well, 14 at the time, right up front under the stage, delirious.

I remember the bass player from the Woodstock movie. He good. But, he is just a little bit "different ", isnt he?
Leo now lives round the corner from me in a suburb of Cardiff, U.K. My wife used to work in the local post office and told me one of her customers played at Woodstock. I asked her to find out more and it was Leo. After that she got Leo to sign one of my TYA albums for my birthday. He is a very distinguished elderly gentleman these days. The stories he could tell!
Leo is also an absolute Gentleman.
No one ever talks about how great Leo Lions is, but he keeps up with old machine gun...

I've always said how Alvin Lee is somehow left out of the conversation of best British blues guitarists, or just best blues guitarists in general, is absolutely preposterous. He could do what everyone else was doing and a whole lot more.

I saw TYA about a year after they played Woodstock, was really impressed by his playing...here I am knocked out by his Wes Montogomery style octave solos- got to say he was ahead of his time in the rock genre for sure. NEVER saw him play anything other than his ES 335, interesting to hear him play a Strat!
My guitar teacher in the mid 80s was a huge Alvin Lee fan. I knew who Alvin was then but my teacher made me a fan. I wanted to learn how to shred but my teacher said learn some of this guys licks first.

I was into Jeff Beck, Hendrix and all that. I never had anyone turn me on to Ten Years After. I saw the Woodstock footage, but it wasn't the progressive blues like they play here. They took it to another level. He's not a real great vibrato player but he was playing really interesting stuff.

And sure Alvin Lee had talent, but tbh it was plain even in the late 60's that he had a couple of licks that'd show up in every song and that got old after awhile.

We all listened to TYA when the first two albums came out, but man, after a while you couldn't miss the stuck-in-a-rut repetition so the albums eventually got passed on.
Gotta admit it's funny to see a 50+ year old man wearing leather pants and playing guitar, though. And maybe Leo Lyons was playing 32nd notes, I don't know, but it's only impressive to watch, IMO, for a few years during adolescence and then tastes change.
Sounds like you've got a powerful crush on those guys, hmm? To each his own, I say.
@@michaelwesterland1853 I think they rock, you obviously don't. I like rocking blues and they put out some of the best. Your taste in music does not recognize what I find spectacular. Ric Lee is also a fabulous drummer, your ear is not tuned to it. does not stop mine from enjoying it.
saw these guys at winterland in san francisco fall of 1971....got out of vietnam in winter of 1971...they played for 2 hours nonstop and did only four songs....tripping with binoculars,, was really intense....at one time had all their albums...switched from vinyl to casettee ....made three 45 minute tapes with tunes the way i wanted them...to this day i know this is some of the most creative radical music ever made ....

Saw Alvin quite a few times at the winterland ballroom. That was a magical place. When it was torn down I got a basketball size piece of the concrete façade with the white paint on it. It sits proudly displayed in the guest bedroom.
@@Scorpio1060- at the time i was driving a 1970 chevy van, long bed,....when the show was over i could not get it on the street as the street was very steep....the van was a 3 speed on the column....slowly backed into the car behind me and the wheels just spun....very trippy ending to a very trippy show...
This. Is. Incredible. I really miss those days. Every day filled with new discoveries and priceless treasures. Life was so damn good back then.
We were so fortunate to see life back then ,and now we must try to teach these God less morel less creations that this life need to change back to where we were with morels and respect for God and others

Hi... at 73 this year me n my mates n girl friends use to go to the dancing slipper at '''West Bridgford''Nottingham around 1966ish to dance n watch the Jay Birds ,,, Alvin Lee on Lead guitar ,,, I lost touch as I emigrated to Australia 1968 ..............then in Sydney in the seventies I saw an LP with his pic, on it ,,,, OMG that's the Jay Birds , but no TEN YEARS AFTER ,, I still remember you and brilliant guitaring , RIP Alvin ,,

Hi, I am from Mansfield Notts, and I used to go to the slipper also.I used to play in a band in Mansfield too and knew the Jaybirds, and Rick Lee used to play in our band for a short time. I live in USA now and rarely go back to UK.
Saw them in London ontario just after choo-choo mama album came out. I was 14 my brother 15. We hung out in the arena after the concert was over and talked to the band. We gave them 3 joints for 2 drum sticks which my sister now has . They chatted us up while yiadies tore down equipment. To sit with Alvin Lee and Co. Was a special memory for a kid. Thank you for this .
The essence of rock. Uncluttered, no frills just emotion and riffs. Leo is the real madman across the water. Wished I could have seen this band in their heyday. Thanks for posting.
I have a bootleg gig of Alvin lee called made in Germany 1969 looks similar to this and of course incredible guitar playing way ahead of his time rip Alvin lee you will never be forgotten!

Wim Wenders directed Wings of Desire and filmed Ry Cooder's foray into Cuba called The Buena Vista Social Club. Two Oscar nominations. Also worked with U@ and Talking Heads. That said, all he did was set up a tripod and change film when it ran out.

Such a good natural sound .This was how it was done then.
Sadly I was a shade too young to really enjoy these guys on first go round, Wasn't till much later when starving for good new music that I started going back in time to search for the bands i had missed.. Happy to say this was one of the first I rediscovered. Doesn't get much better than this.

Cricklewood Green was my first Ten Years After 8-track that I bought after hearing them play Love Like A Man on the radio. Best damn blues/rock and roll guitarist that has been overlooked. I wish I could have seen them back in their day, along with Jimi Hendrix, the Doors (when Jim was sober) and Janis Joplin.

This is so good, so great to watch, brings me back to a time filled with so many amazing memories...it almost hurts to watch. In that good way.
I had forgotten how good this band was. And what a great guitar player Alvin Lee was. I saw them at Miami Jai Alai in 1970 or 1971, and I still remember them as having given one of the best performances I ever saw.
When Alvin Lee was in Phoenix we heard what sounded to us a tight band until Ten Years After followed. I've seen the Doors, Hendrix, Janus etc. But Lee and the band were the tightest I ever heard. RM
In the early 80's they played a small nightclub in my town. I absolutely idolized Alvin, but was too young to go. My sister and a couple friends of mine went & ended up hanging with them all in the parking lot after the show sharing a smoke, (nothing illegal, of course). I was devastated to have missed that, but I did get to see them perform together once & saw Alvin solo two more times. Such an underrated master of the guitar. I guess he gave up on the Fender since it kept falling out of tune from the whammy bar, but he sure made it sing.

I love Alivin Lee, i drew him by hand in 1976. I would sit an listen to that album with headphones all day ..along with Hendrix, also drawn. Love this..ty for the person who filmed an treasured this gem

Busts a string around the 16 minutes area, re-tunes the rest and just keeps on going. Amazing guitarist and band. Saw them live in Edinburgh on the same bill as Jethro Tull as substitutes for Stevie Winwood and Traffic - Stevie was "ill". A memorable night.

I thought I knew rock/blues. Duane Allman and Peter Green, but this is as good as I ever heard! Alvin Lee didn't have to take a backseat to anyone!!! And Leo Lyons and the drummer, Ric Lee, are one great rhythm section. I listen to this everyday

Alvin played this strat at Van Dyke Club Plymouth UK January 1969 we were there luckily!!! The crowd kept asking for Spoonful as encore so they played it again!! Status Quo et al cry your eyes out!!! Best wishes from Plymouth UK!!

It was such a pleasure seeing TYA live way back when - I had the luxury of seeing them 3 times in very different venues - they shined in each one - blues, jazz, rock, they could do it all. Chicks head barely moves thruout the 1st track - while Leos head never stops. Its raw and beautiful. Theres random music and finesse melodies. I;m 50,000 miles outside my brain as I watch and listen to you. SSSHHHHH

@ElPocho DelMundo I saw TYA shortly near my hometown in Germoney. They play with a wonderfull young gitarplayer from England. And the bass was played by Herman Hermits bass player.

Saw ten years after at Madison square garden 1974 with ZZ Top as opening act. Man what a show from 10th row deaf for 3 days but a great memory. Never saw a strat in Alvin’s hands but he works it well. Leo Lyons spectacular as always,chick Churchill and Rick lee truly rock. Great video thanks for uploading

Oh ya! Amazing, TYA were such a cool band, when i went to see Woodstock at the cinema i was 15 and Alvin blew me away, from then on i was hooked and fascinated by them and still am. Thanks this is awesome.

@@harmono8766 boy, you make feel OLD! Ten Years After is one of the iconic performers at (need I specify?) the original Woodstock concert. If you haven’t seen the movie, there are some of the greatest live performance by late 1960s rock legends. A must watch for any music fans (as opposed to celebrities thought of as musicians). Alvin Lee plays some of the fastest, coolest rock’n’roll guitar riffs I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot! Not later rock riffs, but stuff from early rock’n’roll. As a late 1960s band, there name literally refers to ten years after the birth of rock’n’roll, like Chuck Berry and all his contemporaries. Check it out after going to see a classic rock cover band in a club. Absolutely astonishing music in my mind…I grew up with it. We went to Newport ‘69, which was really the west coast version of that original Woodstock, and took place within a month of it.

I was in the 9th. grade at this time cruising on Coast highway with Ten Years After on a trip... Hard to think of Alvin Lee gone and now Eddie Van Hallen. Rest In Peace Boys... I hope and pray there is a Rock n Roll Heaven.😢
