That tree burl reminds me of Pan from the Greek stories, and he played the flute. Maybe the owner of the large harmonica and Pan had some wild times up there in the woods, playing some music and dancing around drinking cider and mulled wine.
I def would make sure that the tree is well taken care of. That is nature's art with a side of weirdness just because it can.

DEFINITELY. I make my living buying and selling antiques and collectibles including coins, and as a single mom with no other income I basically have to hustle every waking hour. Even when I grant myself 'down' time I can't relax enough to just watch a movie or something; I feel a constant need to seek desirable objects. If I'm sick of making Ebay listings or I just finished a big reorganizing effort or something like that, if it's late at night I go through whatever recent pocket change or bank rolls I have, to look for errors and whatever.....but if it's daytime, baby I'm hopping in the car with Holmes and Watson (detecter and pinpointer)! I rarely find anything remotely good (Mercury dimes are the very best so far), but just the chance of a great discovery is compelling enough, and it is SOOOOOO fun and meditative.

Years ago My dad took me out to an old plantation in Mississippi. We had to walk a while into the woods to get to it. The old house was still standing but the roof was about half caved in. There was a cemetery a ways behind the house and there headstones made from cypress. On our way back out I took a couple of the bricks from the fireplace. The day I got back home in Texas I was standing by the kitchen sink talking on the phone to my brother when someone clearly knocked on the door. My brother even heard the knock over the phone. I immediately leaned over the sink to look out the window and saw no one at the door. The next day I gave the bricks away.

@Wishful Thinking Not sure how those two psychologist came up with that idea but I figure it realized I didn't have a cold so there was no reason to put me in the ground. It wasn't even flu season. You see I did some studying and found that the majority of them folks in the graveyards died from the flu or cold. Im figuring that because they're all still in their coffin. 🥁

That's an interesting discussion re: spirits! I'd like to think that if that were the case, we were honouring their memory by cherishing their items once more before they are lost to the earth. Love the elephant spoon. Happy hunting. :)

He's incredibly smart & u can tell he's studied up and knows his his history which is another thing I love about him. @mattvermont7994 Před 4 lety

Hi Brad, The bullet you found is a .58 caliber 3-Ringer or Minie Ball that was used during the Civil War in Springfield Rifles. What's interesting about yours is that it was pulled from a rifle unfired using a worm type puller. That is why it has that ringed groove at the point. The puller resembles a corkscrew and wraps around the bullet cutting that groove in it so it can grip and the bullet pulls out easily. Even more interesting is the question of, were there Union Soldiers in that area during the war? Those rifles were used for sometime after the war, and many were converted to the Trapdoor single shot cartridge style later in life. I doubt they were sold off as surplus until the late 1800's or early 1900's. So it was either a Soldier in the war that unloaded there (due to the rifle refusing to fire, or it was removed by a hunter later in history for the same reason.

Brad, it seems like that site was inhabited by a Civil War soldier. The time period of most of the coins & some of the other stuff are during the war and then add in the minie ball. It would be interesting to find out who lived there during the war. If u could find out a name from the landowner or land records, then u could look on ancestry and see what u could find out about the person. They obviously survived the war as there was a post war date coin. It would also be interesting to see those stirrups all shined up and see if they might possibly be Civil War cavalry stirrups. The decor on them seems a bit extravagant for just the run of the mill stirrups of that time. Did Chris get to keep the stirrups?

Cool finds. As for that toad, you should see the toads down here in south Florida, they're cane toads, and some are over 9 inches long from their nose to their vent/butt. If you stretch their back legs out they're well over a foot long. I was shocked the first time I saw one, I thought I found some record toad, but to find out they're just another invasive species that was brought here and now they're breeding like crazy. lol. The bad thing is they have glands, and even the tadpoles are highly to most animals, a lot of peoples dogs and cats have died from catching them.

I had a stroke 2 weeks ago and have been bed bound since. I have always been exited on Friday morning to click in your newest postings. Now at this time I am even more excited. Great hunt and good luck on next hunts.

Not sure why, but toads always look vaguely resentful to me. I'm probably anthropomorphisizing-- that might've been the happiest toad in the world, for all I know.
MASSIVELY COOL STIRRUPS! Man, I would *love* to see those properly strapped! Got to wonder about how on earth somebody lost those? There's no way they came off a horse's tack while it was being ridden, so-- theft? Maybe somebody stole them, hid them and never came back for them? You don't just lose a fancy pair of stirrups!
Spirits and so forth... Living out here in the Southwest, I hike to a lot of ruins, mostly Native American but also to old ghost towns, mines, graveyards, etc. If I feel like there's somebody around, I generally say something to the effect of "Hello, I'm here, I'm not going to destroy anything, just looking around," and when I leave I wish whoever's listening peace. I never give my name-- that's important. Maybe there's someone/something listening, maybe not, but I figure it never hurts to be civil... OR careful. And if something looks like it was left as an offering (something you do see out here at Native American ruins and petroglyph sites) I absolutely freaking do not touch it. Allllll the nopes. I've seen cornmeal, fresh mesquite pods, ears of corn, tobacco, coins, candles, feathers, strips of cloth or leather, honey, oil, cigarettes, food, alcohol and many, many other offerings-- and I may be a plain old white chick, but I'm not stupid-- you show respect and leave offerings *alone.* Intent lingers. But random coins in an old road I wouldn't call offerings, so I'd be all over those.
Chris, not to be personal and all, but that's one huge harmonica reed you got there. Wow. As for the odd three-ring bullet, if you were anywhere near the sea I'd swear the thing had been carved at the end to make a fishing-weight; seen that, though usually they just put a hole through them and mostly on ones that'd already been fired and were damaged. They even got used as small net-weights sometimes. **shrugs** But in the middle of a Vermont forest?
