Bring peace to your mind, build confidence, focus and self control. Train your natural ability don't go for instant gratification. www.meadlongbows.com/bow_build... Path to self-mastery.
Stress relief, remove anxiety, gain intense focus. Training your natural ability you will develop a sense of awareness and confidence that cannot be had with a tool that does the aiming for you. You cannot gain this confidence by using any cheat systems, aiming systems, or methods that disconnect your automatic brain. This sense of confidence and awareness is deep cannot be had any other way. Example: if you do not know how to physically defend yourself but you carry a firearm you have confidence correct? If you are not with your firearm, and find your safety threatened are you still confident? This form of archery will give you that confidence just as if you were a trained martial artist that did not need a firearm to feel confident in protecting themselves.
If interested in honing in on your natural abilities maybe this will help you get started..it's just like pointing your finger. Raise your bow arm up just like its your finger pointing at the target (do not look down your finger) just point and shoot.
The method of arrow feeding i show here I believe was first demonstrated to the public by master Lajos Kassai, there are many alternate methods of speed loading/feeding based on your style of shooting. Since most shoot split finger i displayed this style today. It is very Zen like. I am still a student on this journey of The Way of The Bow, hopefully this helps some along the same path.
    Enjoy!

I loved this video. Probably my favorite part of the class was the hour or so we spent with you watching me shoot and how you allowed that time to prove your point that I could already shoot by instinct, without all the training wheels, I just didn’t know it yet. I keep going back mentally to the time I was getting tired and sloppy and overthinking it and had 6 arrows spread out all over the bale, I said “man, that looks like 6 different archers took one shot each”, and without missing a beat you said “that’s because you left the moment so it was 6 different archers”. Stay in the moment!

obvious I've seen to shoot "unconsciously" and as they said in the Zen way of the bow, if you try to hit you miss, if you don't try you miss, just do it... Thank you sir. Greetings from Belgium

I'm a bit of a late starter, but throughout my life i have always felt a want/need to do it. Having watched Backyardbowyer and several others, i was educated (I'm not dissin them AT ALL), but i felt something natural or cerebral was missing from these teachings. Then i saw this video and your delivery is calm, but the info is deep and everything I hear you say is either informative or confirmative. Thank you. To me, aiming at a small point and trusting the automatic mind to execute the shot is the most fascinating part of instinctive archery. Your presentation has convinced me that this an endeavor worth pursuing. I'm starting out with a 20# traditional Mongolian bow, which I plan to shoot with thumb draw at first, both left-handed and right-handed for an additional challenge. This video gives me a lot to think about. Thank you Dave.

Having some element of active physical meditation is what really sold me on trying it. I'm happy to say my first day was tons of fun and I shot with my wife until the sun came down.

Many thanks Dave. I've been shooting my 30lb samick sage in my garage for over a year. I've progressed through proper mechanics but have been stuck for a couple months on the subject of aiming. After watching your video and allowing myself to feel the flow, especially loosing the arrow without hesitation, I'm hitting much more consistently now but more importantly it's a heck of more satisfying and fun. Great tips on arrow knocking and holding arrows on the left hand.
Thank you for reminding me that my body knows what to do if my mind stops fighting my body and just lets it to do it's thing. It's almost a relief and a spiritual release if you know what I mean.

Thank you so much Peter! Just passing along what I am learning and experiencing hoping it can help some. To answer your question re, kids...it depends on their previous exposure..if no exposure to an archery style or type of bow..then yes i'd say this is how they will shoot. I made my son a sapling bow when he was 4 and this is basically how he shot it. I believe I may have a video on my channel of him at age 4 shooting it in the house..haha hitting water bottles at 10 yds.

Great Video Dave! I began learning "snap shooting" when I was around 5 years old (68 yrs ago). A neighbor that was in his 80's gave me "pointers" on focusing on the spot and not trying to aim. Eventually with lots of practice hitting the "spot" became second nature.
I am a hunter but more than that archery is Zen. I often shoot as a form of meditation.

For me, same with golf (of all things). Being fairly good, first time I was asked about "swing thoughts", I was stumped. My conscious mind goes completely quiet. To this day I can't remember "thinking" about anything during a shot, and if my conscious mind was somehow intruding in the background, caring or fearful, poor outcomes resulted. I think golf taught me to just "be", or rather I already had the ability and golf displayed such to me, hundreds of thousands of times.

Have you ever studied shooting with a "thumb draw" in any of the Asiatic styles? Learning that different style of archery is what brought my passion back to archery. Learning Turkish style archery from translations of medieval manuscripts is fascinating and much more rewarding than any kind of competition target shooting ever was for me. Break all of the rules of competition archery, practice shooting while moving, different drawing styles and anchor points for different purposes, and shooting from unpredictable stances. You can't have a "formal" anchor point while riding a horse for example.

Hi there Sir. I love your work. Thanks for the content. Throwing the arrows from the right side of the bow would be even faster. Generally traditional bows are mostly used by Eastern archers and all of them throw from the right side. You get more control too. And it becomes more fluid. But I saw on one of your videos you were practicing to throw from the right side. You mentioned your shoulder was hurt. I suffered from a shoulder injury for months. Almost 7 months and I couldn't do any archery practice. It's very sad for me, however I'm about to get my bow out soon. But good video. We are taught how to connect spiritually and archery includes so much of life. Is amazing amazing amazing how much archery involves everyday life and spirituality.

Too heavy and bad habits form and it will be less enjoyable. This weight will harvest large game if needed and provide a tool that you can enjoy using probably until the day you die. Hi, I am trying to learn archery and I noticed very early in your video that you do what many other archers call "snap shooting", letting your arrow loose before reaching what is commonly referred to as full draw. I don't actually see you anchor your draw hand at all, is there a reason for this? Does it have to do with your physical limitations due to back and shoulder injuries?

    • @MeadLongbows
      @MeadLongbows  Před 4 lety +2

Not due to physical limitations at all. I train this way because it is most natural just like throwing a ball..there is no pause in the movement my eyes brain and hand is already taking care of where the arrow needs to go all I need to do is complete the proper body mechanics and be fluid. Everyone does archery for different reasons. I do not practice archery to feed my ego..I practice archery with no ego and to sharpen my true self. Most wont understand this. Most wont recieve the rewards within archery.
