- Designing For is a series which looks at a level in gaming, and analyzes a theme central to that level's design. In this episode, we look at the overworld map of Dragon Quest III, and how it gets the player intimately familiar with its surroundings with a simple trick that has yet to be recreated.

My years... My quest... They have led me here. They will now end here. Thank you. With your guidance, I now know the only open world game that is right for me. It begins.
Okay, really wasn't expecting that plot twist of the map being Earth. I was already nodding my head thinking "Yes, a game is MUCH better when it's points of interest are easily recognizable by their surroundings" then BAM, Earth. That's taking it to a whole other level, but games not mimicking Earth could accomplish this as well. I find Zelda is good at this, and Golden Sun being one of the WORST. I was constantly lost in that game's Overworld.
Also, please tell me I saw a clip of Charles Barkley Shutup and Jam: Gaiden. I will drop a Chaos Dunk if this is true.
You didn't see a clip of Charles Barkley Shutup and Jam: Gaiden.
However, you did see a clip of Tales of Game's Studios Presents: Chef Boyardee's Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa. Go brush up on your BRAIN and maybe someday you can slam with the best, 'cuz right now you're still jammin' with the rest.
Brutal. Savage. Wrecked.
Absolutely love Dragon Quest III. I originally got it for my 11th birthday on the Gameboy Color and was immediately hooked. I've since played it multiple times on emulators on my phone and PC. Most recently I modded my SNES classic to be able to play PAL roms and loaded it up with an English translation patch of the Super Famicom version of the game. It was a blast to play through it with the updated graphics on the SNES. That final boss is ridiculous though.
*Punches in "Dragon Quest World Maps" hoping to find someone over analyzing one of their overworlds, but expecting to find nothing.* I'm now pleasantly surprised and hooked on this channel.
Ha ha ha! I played it back on the GB and recently the mobile version and still it took this video to make me realize the reason this is still my favorite world map is because it's the one I live in! Nice!
Speaking of maps, this game's map is littered with "forest, forest, mountain, mountain, BIG MOUNTAIN, etc." It's quite strange seeing so much dotted sprites, when FF used a bit more sophisticated map work at the time. Not saying it's bad (it keeps things simple), but having never seen the original trilogy, it was a striking feature.
It's building off of the original Dragon Quest 1 tilesets, which were naturally simpler since they were before Final Fantasy. The game advances in other ways, such as the day/night cycle and such, but there probably wasn't as much push to reinvent the art style. Final Fantasy also really wanted to push a realistic world since it has a more serious, high fantasy tone, whereas Dragon Quest has always been a lot more comical.
It would've been funny if they decided to go ahead to call Lanson Australia. Also, true or not, that rumor is awesome.
This will help when I start playing the Switch version.
Wonder what inspired the creators of Dragon Quest III to mimic the actual geography of the Earth. 🌏
Hello yes I am from Australia and I take offence to you Australia is a horrible place comment because some places in Australia actually really good so don’t go hating on us just because of the outback
