    I used to live in a couple of house-shares with Jus Oborn in the early/mid 90's when he lived in Dorset,U.K. Crazy days at No.13.So much acid & weed.Hope he's doing well.Haven't spoken to him for 20 odd years.I used to watch the original line-up rehearse.Utterly wall-shaking!!

    My favorite song has always been Supercoven off their EP by the same name released in 1998. It's 13 mins of fucking awesomeness. You can feel Satan himself walking in. The darkness is so present and then BAM it gets more fast paced and bluesy. Love it!

    I guess I am the only one that loves this album and thinks it is brilliant. Not perfect for sure, but a great album. I believe the haters are the ones that want another Dopethrone / Come My Fanatics. They did it, it’s Record it, no one will ever top those albums, not even EW.
    Just do what I do, and listen to the albums you love, for the reasons you do. And quit complaining that their “new album is not Dopethrone” we been hearing that since the ‘90’s.

    @VEiLiXPresents Před 6 lety +3

    Every god damn person wanted to hear another Dopethrone or Come My Fanatics type album from EW and it's good they didn't repeat themselves. I mean, isn't it better to have see you in hell type riffs where u skip one count, isn't it better to have song such as necromania with more psychedelic style, where bass and drums are fucking great. Wicked Caresses where they build up slowly and than hit u with that atmospheric kind of bluesy and psychedelic heaviness. GOD FUCKING DAMNED THE REAPER with it's sadness and kind of depressive attitude where has no reasons to live and no reasons to die with that guitar tone laid on another guitar but this one has some wah pedal, the only problem i've got with this song is that it's god damn 3:15 minutes long. This album art is fantastic, it's just badass and it doesn't have to be anything else, it just has to be badass. Remember folks it's my opinion that this album is as badass as it gets, it's must to have your own opinion about this album and don't forget that u can always listen to Dopethrone and Come My Fanatics

I haven't quit looking for new music but I don't do it near as much as I did 10 years ago.. when I do look .. I go backwards in time. I happen to find Electric Wizard a couple years ago, I had never even heard the name, and omg I can't stop listening to them. I just got dopethrone several months ago.. Vinum Sabbithi is magically then to go into Funeralopolis next... I can't get past the first to songs... I listen to them over and over in sequence.

This album is definitely lacking the "punch you in the face with razor blades" feel that they had on dopethrone, but its not horrible. @nicolasbertin8552 Před 6 lety +7

      Indeed. Sludge is whisky, New Orleans, scorching vocals, larsenny low disgusting guitars, slow to mid tempo. It's Eyehategod, it's Negative Reaction, it's Crowbar. It is not Electric Wizard. But what pisses me off is when they call Neurosis "post-sludge"...

    • @pablochacon666
      @pablochacon666 Před 6 lety +3

      I kinda see why people call Neurosis post-sludge. While lyrically they have nothing to do with whisky and other stuff you mentioned, their sound - at least some years ago - was super sludgy. Like, you could throw away their neurotic lyrical themes and put some whisky and New Orleans instead and no one would've noticed.

    Really good review! I'm not down with the riff repetitions either, I think EW could use some more variety on this, especially after taking so much inspiration from 70s rock rather than the usual doom metal. I find the tactless title hilarious! I mean, there's a limit to how much you can copy Black Sabbath, but this is borderline plagiarism in my opinion.

  • @RyanGrantHeretoDestroy

    So far I've only listened to the album once. But my gut feel so far is pretty spot on with your review. It's not bad, but I can't say that I love it either and that could change over time. It seems like they can't or don't want to stay in one place style wise with each album. Which isn't a surprise because no two of their albums sound the same. Even if it's just the production/recording quality. I'll give it more time, but won't be running out and putting cash down for it on vinyl right now.

After the nonsense which went down on "Time To Die", I figured I was finished with The Wizard. So when 'Bloody' spilled last year I was not in the least surprised by it, in that It seemed as though the band - and more specifically, Oborn - were simply spent of ideas. But now, I rather like how you have placed the album in a retro 'bluesy' context. You have given me a meaningful basis with which to listen to the album with new ears and appreciate it for what it truly is.

    Honestly, I love this album, it's just great. Love the production as well. The weirdest thing about it is the cover, which is just a worse version of the latest Obituary.

    I really love the stripped down more proto sound on this album, definitely a good call there. Necromania is the strongest track, that intro riff is simplistic beauty. However, she's so right about the cover. I was going to buy the vinyl until I saw that mess... For a band with some of the most awesome art work, this sleeve was a let down. Overall 3 or 3 & 1/2 is an honest rating, album does tend to drag and get a little boring towards the end.

    What I liked about this album is the lack of BS. Too many of their albums have songs that would be much shorter without the "stuff" or would just end. This is more dialed in and focused. Unfortunately it also sounds like one of their many imitators.

    It pulls me out of the review when you state or opinions as if they are objective as opposed to subjective 😛 "their very best song" "wasn't criticism just an observation" the word "technical" is used subjectively when referring to musicality of a musician or band because you can use it to describe so many different facets of a piece or a collection of pieces produced by an artist or band. It's not a big deal but I could relate more to your point of view if you were a bit more.... realistic might be the word? When it comes to the presentation of your critiques.

      Kinnzie Martin Clearly everything in this review, and ALL reviews, is just the subjective opinion of the reviewer. Do you expect her to say "In my opinion" before and after each sentence? I don't think she was declaring that what she has to say is empirical objective truth, and it's a little hard to believe most people would think this of her.

    Electric Wizard haven't made a great album since "Witchcult Today", in my opinion. "Black Masses", "Time to Die" and this newest record each have a song or two which are pretty good, but to my ears, the albums are pretty boring as a whole. Their leaning further into the whole 60's blues, psych and proto punk and garage thing isn't doing much for me, as EW don't seem that great at writing with those influences in mind. I highly doubt we'll get another supremely heavy yet still psychedelic album in the vein of "We Live" or "Witchcult Today", but I can dream. I love "Come my Fanatics" and Dopethrone", but the two aforementioned records really hit the sweet spot for me.

  • @jesperbc

    I couldn't get through this album. It was so boring and repetitive, which is usually a positive thing when talking about doom and stoner metal (Sleep - Dopesmoker, ffs!), but no... "Come My Fanatics" and "Dopethrone" are awesome Electric Wizard albums, but this is bland as hell. The sound is thin, the blues riffing is boring, the lyrics are less than tormented. Only thing reminding me of an Electric Wizard album is the drums being below the floor boards. This gets a 1/5 from me, and I'll go back to listening to "Dopethrone". Gone are the days of rampant drug use (good for them, bad for the music), internal conflicts so intense you could hear it in how the band played their instruments.

    Sara...no need to be conflicted. I'm a long time fan as well and this album IMHO...is terrible. A lot of people have been slagging EW for years now but I've still enjoyed them. Time to Die was a cool album so were Black Masses and Witchcult Today but this new album...Uhg.
    EW went from being a trendsetter and a trailblazer to predictable trend follower and that's sad for me as a long time fan. This album is very mediocre that it sounds like they didn't even try. I LOVE Blue Cheer but EW sounding like Blue Cheer is NOT what I want to hear from the once mighty EW. Maybe Jus has smoked one too many joints and he's out of riff ideas? I want them to go back to doing new things rather than what they did here which was to sound like every other new Doom band that makes a record now. Honestly if this music was given to me and iw as told it was a new band I wouldn't dig it so the fact that it's EW kinda makes it even worse.
    Conflicted? Nope. I'm positive that I personally don't dig this album.

      Right? Come My Fanatics and Dopethrone were game changers, for me at least. Those riffs, the Boss Fz-2, and everything about their sound was so massive and evil, and a relatively new sound for the doom/stoner genre. And I agree that they've become rather predictable at this point. I'm over-generalizing obviously, but all their songs sound like the Witchcult Today/Chosen Few riff. I'm glad they're still a band, but they're no different than the rest of the general/schtick/retro doom/stoner bands that are out there now.
      Really disappointed with this one to be honest..

    I just can't get into this. I've tried listening to a couple of EW's albums and every time I just get so bored after a few minutes. Even these samples are apparently the band going for more blues and less doom but I still couldn't get into it. Due to this and the fact I really don't enjoy Sleep, I've concluded that sludge/doom is just not for me
