Great interview! I was only 6 or 7 watching Shaun in the 90s and just wanted to rewatch the mark of the century, glad I took this detour. I didn't know much about Shaun before but he seems like a great bloke! Shame about the possibility of CTE, I'd have to agree with his thoughts on helmets as you see CTE far more often than you'd like over in the NFL and they wear helmets 100% of the time. It's such a tricky situation, I think the athletes' health should be the #1 priority but removing any chance of concussions would require a total revamp of the game, not to mention society's admiration for guys who'd attack the ball like Shaun, giving us a more entertaining experience as fans. I guess it's easy for me to sit back and let them pay by blood for my entertainment but if there were a compromise that would at least drastically decrease the odds of players suffering head injuries, I'd be in full support.
At the 1970 Grand Final I witnessed Jezza's Mark of the Century right in front of me. Then in 1995 I was behind the goals when Shaun Smith took his Mark of the Century. I wonder how many others can say this?
