  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Melissa Manchester, Legendary Singer / Songwriter
    About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest is one of the greatest singer-songwriters and performers of our time. Melissa Manchester started out in 1971 as one of the “Staggering Harlettes”, the backup group to Bette Midler. But soon after launching her tremendously successful solo career, she had her first top 10 hit, "Midnight Blue".
A quick succession of hit songs followed, including “Come in From the Rain”, “Whenever I Call You Friend”, “Don’t Cry Out Loud”, which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Female Performance, and “Through the Eyes of Love” and “I’ll Never Say Goodbye”, which BOTH got Academy Award nominations in the same year, and “You Should Hear How She Talks About You”, which won her a Grammy for Best Pop Female Performance, AND her wonderful version of Dionne Warwick's classic, "Walk on By". And I can’t resist mentioning my personal favourites, “Fire in the Morning”, “It’s All in the Sky Above”, “Help is on the Way”, and “Feeling’ for You” from her FABULOUS jazz album, “You Gotta Love the Life”.
Her rich, powerful voice is unparalleled. Her career is remarkable, not only for its longevity and accomplishments, but for its versatility. She’s literally done it all. She appeared with Bette Midler in the movie, “For the Boys”. She co-wrote and starred in the musical, “I Sent a Letter to my Love”. She’s composed songs for movies. She starred in the national tours of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night” AND “Song and Dance”, which I had the pleasure of seeing in Toronto. She created the role of “Maddy” on the hit TV series “Blossom”. Last November she was inducted into the Great American Songbook Foundation Hall of Fame.
AND NOW, she’s released her 22nd album: a brand new double CD LIVE CONCERT from 1977 that has NEVER been publicly available until now.

I'm sure you can tell, from watching this interview, that I am a HUGE fan of Melissa Manchester. It was a dream come true to interview her, and to publicly thank her for the hopeful and healing effect that her many beautiful songs have had on my life. Melissa's intelligence and ability to articulate so clearly, her songwriting process, made this a very special interview. I'm so delighted that the feedback from this interview has been so positive. I put my heart and soul into each interview, and every once in a while, the stars align to create a magical experience between my guest and I. This interview was one of those magical experiences. I hope you enjoy it. And thank you Melissa for your generosity and kindness - and for writing the soundtrack of our lives!

Love this lady's voice. So many hits, I remember hearing midnight blue on the radio, and then I saw her on the midnight special, and I fell in love with her. She knows how to make hits. I rank her with Cher and Barbra Streisand having such a great range as well as perfect delivery.

I have so many favourites of Melissa’s, but for some reason, one of my favourites is ‘Thief of Hearts’ from 1984. It was the title track for the movie of the same name starring Steven Bauer and Canadian actress Barbara Williams.
Thanks for this great review of Melissa Manchester’s career!

The statement Melissa said....I tried to look back without staring.... That was so profound. Someone needs to write a song with that statement in it. Wow!

I still love her one-off with Giorgio Moroder, Thief Of Hearts, and I have made fan-remixes of City Nights and other tracks from the 80's that should have been bigger hits, but she and Olivia (who was in her Soul Kiss era) were being eclipsed by an upstart named Madonna.

This is a particularly special interview, Harvey, because Ms. Manchester speaks so astutely about her process and craft, it is akin to a Master Class. Thank God for the forum you create where such a legend can go in-depth. As a teacher of voice-acting myself and someone who had the pleasure of MC'ing a major NYC event that starred Melissa, I feel fortunate to be in her company once again, through your meaningful show. Blessings to you both.

Harvey, here's a story for you: Back in the early sixties, around when I was of middle school school age in Manhattan, my younger sister used to bring her best friend to the apartment to play. Of course I, being the older brother, would easily lose patience with the two of them bothering me and getting in "my space." Little did I, or anyone back then, know that this little friend of my sister would turn out to be...Melissa Manchester. ;-)

Oy, I miss this era of female singer/songwriters who wrote beautiful ballads with meaningful lyrics❤ Helen Reddy, ONJ, Karen Carpenter...and Melissa Manchester ❤
I can't remember the last time a ballad has been #1 on the Billboard Charts in decades. It's now all just rap and twerking and awful repetitive lyrics 🤮 I don't think we'll ever see the likes of her style of music again😢
