Nice video Harris, particularly the USB vs HDMi comparison with the same camera. I tried it with a CZcams live stream on Friday night using an EOS R and RF 15-35mm f2.8 and wondered if it was the USB or my reduced internet bandwidth that was holding it back to 480p, but it still looked pretty good - AND of course was effectively free of charge. Hi Duff, Just a rapid question as I'm on a Mac and the software is not available yet (hope this will be very soon !!). Can you tell me if while you're using this new piece of software you have the ability to adjust the camera settings (ie. shutter speed, ISO and, aperture) in real time ? I'm using right now a Canon M50 as my webcam, using "Camera Live" and "CamTwist", and my main problem is to control the camera settings. Despite I'm on Manual mode on my camera, the flipscreen is turned off when activating "Camera live" and I can't adjust the settings if my light is changing (I got a large window next to me, and sometimes, the weather gets cloudy, and my picture turns to dark because of the camera setting beeing fixed by the manual mode !)
If the Canon software give the ability to control the camera settings in real time .. that would be a HUUUUUGE deal !

  • @BryanThePirate
    @BryanThePirate Před 4 lety +5

Some things to bear in mind; with a capture card/camlink the added hardware is doing the rendering. With an app it's your CPU and it can hit HARD. I used to simply screencapture the normal EOS app and it took up *20%* of my 6600k's CPU alone! So you would only want to go with a software solution if you have a beefy CPU and if you can afford a beefy CPU, chances are you can afford a camlink anyway.
Another thing to bear in mind, because it's software based a lot more data is being pulled through the USB hub (a hub isn't always external, EG. the USB ports on the front of your PC is a separate hub to the ones at the back). A USB hub can only handle so much data - that's one of the reason you're frequently advised to have only one video device in one hub at a time otherwise they bottleneck and render the other ports useless (in laymen's terms)
Source: me, I work in IT tech, i'm also a streamer using a Canon 80d and a camlink that has extensively tested this (to see if it was worth saving £120 on a camlink).
Hope this helps with folks making purchase decisions!
Oh and if you do go with a camlink by the way; still avoid canon. I love my 80d, but their "clean HDMI" is only clean in manual focus. If you put it into auto focus you'll get the focus reticle that can not be removed. Meaning you're limited to manual focus and have to set the focus every time you turn on the camera and depending on the lens you use you won't have much freedom to lean forward/back without becoming blurred.

    • @BryanThePirate
      @BryanThePirate Před 4 lety

@@nateman10 Not sure what region you're in but it's currently available on Amazon US and a few online stores in the UK. Depending on where you are it might be worth paying a lil' extra for international shipping. I'm in the UK and sometimes use German Amazon for example.
As i said before I would avoid Canon for streaming. You can't use auto-focus through the HDMI out, unless you want your viewers to see a constant white box around your face. Being limited to manual focus on streams is a pain.
When it comes to how much you spend on a camera, generally as long as it can do 1080 or 4k at 60fps you're fine. The *lens* is what is important. What lens you want varies from person to person, how much space you have to move the camera back/forward and the sort of look you want.
Ultimately it depends on your budget, patience and what literal room you have to play with.

Hopefully, there will be some optimisations in the driver that will enable it to run for longer, but the problem is as you mention in the video, that the camera has to do alot of processing to output the video via USB, and that will create extra heat to dissipate.

Despite not being officially supported, the 5D Mark IV download utility worked with my 5D Mark II, albeit a few glitches.
At first I tried without restarting my computer (win 10 x64) and my camera was recognized by zoom in the settings. After a restart, it wasn't recognized. I reinstalled the utility and Zoom could recognize the camera in settings, and it is still working after another restart. However, when actually joining a zoom meeting the camera only works if there is no waiting lobby.
When Joining a Zoom meeting with a waiting lobby the following occurred:
    -Video Preview windows opens
-i hear a click (shutter opening) and i see what my 5D Mark II is capturing
    -I click Join with Video
-I hear a click (shutter closing) and I'm in the lobby "please wait, the meeting host will let you in soon"
-the host grants me access to the meeting and I hear a click (shutter opening) followed 1 second later by another click (shutter closing)
-I see a splash screen that says "EOS WEBCAM UTILITY BETA" where my 5D Mark II video should be.

Skype app (windows store app) does not recognize the camera, but skype for desktop (downloaded from skype official website) does recognize the camera and i was able to make a video call successfully using skype for desktop.

Since most zoom meetings now have a waiting lobby due to zoom bombing the glitch above is a big problem. however maybe those who have an officially supported camera don't experience this glitch.

UPDATE: Workaround for the zoom meeting with waiting lobby glitch
    1. download and install OBS studio and then download OBS Virtualcam 2.0.5
    2. then open OBS studio, click add new source--> video capture device, name it something like 5dmII and click ok
    3. then in the properties window select "EOS Webcam Utility Beta" for device, and leave everything at default (I changed color space to 709) and click ok.
    4. You should see what your camera is capturing. Click the video image and you should see a red outline. adjust using the red squares on the red outline so that your video fills the entire space.
    5. Click tools --> Virtual Cam --> Start
    6. Open the program you wish to use, in our case Zoom, or click the Zoom meeting invite link you were sent.
    7. If you don't see the video from your camera in Zoom's Video Preview window, then click the settings icon --> Video --> select OBS-Camera from the Camera drop down menu and then exit zoom settings.
    8. Click join with video. wait for the moderator to grant you access and you should now see video once you are in the meeting. you will notice that the camera's shutter no longer clicks as it is stuck open due to OBS Studio.

I’ve been using the canon software since Harris dropped this video. I’ve got the canon eos m200 with a 15-45mm lens. I loved the program since I didn’t have to go out and spend $100+ on a camlink, that’s even if I could find one. Super convenient and simple to use. However, whenever I decided to buy a camlink(second hand of course for way cheaper). There’s a pretty significant quality different when using hdmi compared to the program, also able to record in 4K as well but go figure, you won’t get much quality out of a micro usb cable. So if you’re that someone who’s on a budget and/or starting out, go with the canon utility. But if you’re a stickler for quality, most definitely go with the cam link.

I was looking for a camlink for soo long. I am happy I waited a while for this to come out. Can confirm it works flawlessly with OBS, Thanks Harris!

I really doubt they will be able to increase the resolution or framerate, as it's capped by the USB interface of the camera. Regardless of the USB-C plug, even the M200 can only make use of USB2 bandwidths internally. Using Canons as webcams is something we've been enjoying on Linux for a few years already now, but until Canon upgrades the hardware we're already at its limits.

What I like from Canon putting out this kind of software is 1) if someone already has a Canon for shooting pictures and they don't have a webcam simply because they never needed one (I fall in this category), this is a fantastic and very low-cost option to get a webcam. this leads into 2) using this configuration allows your camera to pull double duty. When you are not using it as a webcam, disconnect it and you have a great photography camera, and vice versa.
I tried this on my EOS R and it worked great. My only minor disappointment was that, at least in my case, the on board mic did not work with the software. I don't know if it was intentional or not from Canon to not include this feature, so if it is user error on my end, but it is an additional option that I think would be very beneficial to those that want or need a complete solution.

I've been using sparkocam which hogs a Tonne of CPU, this has just saved me 20-30% processing power, plus your video on running OBS as administrator has just saved my whole set up! Legend!

It’s good to know Canon is making improvements and innovating. Sad part is...I’m myself a Nikon owner😭

My M50 with the 15-45 original kit lens is just amazing with the beta software. Some fine tuning will make it better. One HUGE tip. The regular Canon utility can NOT be running when you want to use the Canon webcam software. Even in the system tray or on task bar. This drove me nuts for a bit. Once I killed it in Task manager, OBS had no problem getting the signal. Second M50 tip: make sure you have the view screen open. I have no idea why this is an issue, but with it closed, the camera would freeze every 10 seconds for about a second.
