Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on CZcams. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

    WHEELCHAIR HELP:
I don't comment very often but this topic is an extremely important one so I just had to take the time and make the effort.
I currently use both the Permobil and Quantum (the Edge 3, not Stretto). I have also owned and used an Invacare TDX SP.
TLDR, the Permobil is definitely your best choice. Not matter what your choice, please make sure to request that your chair is certified for occupied transport. This is an option on some chairs and is critical for safety as someone who stays in their chair when in a vehicle.
Obviously, there are pros and cons for the chairs but I don't want to get into too much detail unless you ask me for more information or of course if you have any specific questions. As an overall assessment, I do think that one aspect that you didn't mention that I believe to be very important is the reliability of the chair. Even the best featured chair becomes a nightmare when it fails and locks-up in the middle of a relatively steep ramp. I know as I have experienced this on more than one occasion on my less than one-year-old Quantum Edge 3. There is a defect with their motors that causes the failure. It has the most comfortable suspension in my opinion but unfortunately given the reliability issues, I can't in good faith recommend it. The Invacare is actually worse with a lot of random issues. I just don't trust their quality control at all. As for the Permobil M3, it is by far the most reliable. It also has the best mechanisms for reclining as well as elevation. The leg elevation in particular on my Quantum Edge 3 is not great so I tend to not use it as much as I thought I would. That and all the recline and elevator features on the Permobil are a dream to use in comparison. I didn't have these features on the Invacare so I can't really comment other than to say that I would fear even more failure points on an Invacare.
I want to be clear that my obvious current bias is not what I originally thought. When I did the most recent testing process with my insurance, etc., I picked the Quantum Edge 3 as my top pick. I really liked how smooth it felt, especially outside on bumpy sidewalks. I also really liked an old Quantum 6000z that was a speed demon and very reliable. Unfortunately, they used different motors back then and this is one of those terrible cases where the comment that they don't build them like they used to applies. That said, the Permobil is almost as good but given the reliability and the improved seat functions, it is in my opinion by far the best overall choice.
A few other considerations when you decide to order a chair: First off, make sure to insist that the chair is certified for occupied transport. This is a very important safety element for those that stay in their chairs when in a vehicle. For some companies this is an option that must be specified at time of ordering (I know that is the case for Quantum). Also, I know that you were getting very excited about the variety of color options, just keep in mind that a few are included in the price but most are extra charges (inflated charges) that would not be covered by insurance. The USB charging port is not permanently available, rather it is an adapter that you plug into the port you normally use to charge the chair. The basic lights are sometimes included as a promotion when ordering multiple seat functions. Always ask about promotions, as they sometimes forget to tell you and they don't automatically apply, you have to request them. Insurance may cover basic lights if you make a strong safety case (not easy, so you may want to pick your battles). Custom lights of course would definitely not be covered by insurance at all. All that said, try to not be frugal about the options. As you know, your power wheelchair is an extremely important element of our daily lives and one that you live with for many years. Get as much pricing options as you can and consider getting all options that will improve your (or Hannah's) quality of life.
Sorry for the very long comment but I really felt that it was important to share this info. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
No matter what you end up picking, I wish you all the best and hope the process goes smoothly and quickly for you. I truly appreciate how painful and long the process can be.
    Cheers...

Have Invacare Dragon for about 15 years now and ONLY things that I replaced in those years are batteries (that I drained out, because of my intense usage) and front wheels (because of how much I am using this wheelchair), so I don't know what kind of "random issues" you are talking and didn't mention any of them... Many that I know have already replaced their wheelchairs or fixed them many times, but mine is still going as a new one...
Because of my SMA, I became weaker and now I need a wheelchair with more functions, so I ordered a new Invacare Aviva RX 40, because I need a compact and powerful wheelchair, and there's nothing even close to competition to this wheelchair (except those fancy futuristic wheelchairs that cost fortunes)...
I never liked middle driving wheels because they are flimsy and always get stuck on something... Or even worse, rear wheels are preventing you from tilting the wheelchair back so you could climb on higher obstacles... Of course, if your surroundings require "turn around in place", then there's no other option but middle driving wheels...
Don't know about what kind of "best mechanisms for reclining as well as elevation" you are talking, because every wheelchair can do the same things within a difference of a couple of degrees :D
I won't pretend to be an expert, but before ordering I did research about wheelchairs that I was interested in and Invacare had the most "cool" stuff... For example, when you are going uphill, you don't need to push the joystick stick forward to keep the same speed and the computer will be "oh, you were going uphill at 3km/h, ok I will send more power to the driving wheels so you could keep that"... Something similar to that G-track technology, that helps you to drive straight no matter the surface or slope (you can find demonstration video on youtube)... And a lot of "cool" and "smart" things that Invacare can offer with their patented electronic technology...
When I talked with a consultant who helped me to find the best-suited wheelchair for me, he said a thing that I really liked... "How good is a powerful machine if it doesn't have a brain to use its power to the maximum potential and use it correctly? If you have a strong punch, but you don't know any techniques of how to hit the target, you won't be a boxer"

As a wheelchair user myself, i know just how important it is to really take time and consider what it is you need in a chair! For many years, i was just handed a wheelchair and then the next one when i got too big. While i was grateful for this, there was never anyone who listened to what i wanted in a wheelchair, which would make all the difference, afterall, im the one sitting in it everyday. Then this company got in touch and did exactly what you guys are doing. Rather than just accepting a thrown together chair i am now in one that has everything i want and need. It's snug, making me feel safe, its light and easy to move, soft n comfy to sit in and i can get about everywhere.
I don't know if you'll see this comment or even read this far, but if you ask me, my gut says option one straight away. If its one your familiar with, but it also ticks if your list, go for it! Ultimately its your choice and i hope you're happy with what you go for.
Ps, i love your videos, i love you guys and you're just awesome. Stay safe, much love n many blessings

The main difference between the Stretto and Edge 3 is mostly the drive wheel widths. Outdoors the Edge 3 will handle rougher terrain better. I have the Edge 3 if you want to come by and try it I am sure we can find some books for you to sit on.

It's not horsepower either. It's "torque." A lower powered chair can have a "step down" gear which allows it to go up steeper grades. It just goes up them slower (which is safer, anyway).

They couldn't remove him in the chair - in a wheelchair, he'd sink. Gone.

To answer your comments about being able to try out options for chairs, some places have demos for different chairs. I believe that Cole (Rolling with Cole and Charisma) has recently gotten a new electric wheelchair and Cole was able to test out options. It may depend on insurance and who you are going through to make the chair. My chair I had to look through a catalog after getting measured so I had a similar experience as Shane.

14 years in a chair as of today. I was always a mid wheel user but switched to the front wheel drive. The front wheel drive is the most capable drive train when it comes to power wheelchairs. The front wheel drive will actually get into a tighter area than the mid wheel. Once you are outside there is no comparison. I got stuck everywhere in my mid-wheelchairs. Such as stopping on grass [regular cut lawn] and then trying to back up again/go forward after coming to a stop. Once the small casters turn, you are screwed. All of the chairs you are looking at have improved suspension that puts more pressure on the mid drive wheel. Which gives you more traction. However, you lose traction if the front and rear swing arms high centre you - this can happen when you go up an obstacle such as a sidewalk. The most important things I have learned about when it comes to power chairs is reliability and availability of parts. IMO Permobil builds the most reliable wheelchairs on the market. The corpus seating system is designed with “you” in mind, not one size fits all and then make adjustments. They are the innovators when it comes to wheelchairs. STAY AWAY FROM INVACARE!! My TDX-5 midwheel broke in half and caught on fire while I was in it. They are a nightmare to deal with and IMO it is the worst and least reliable chair on the market. Quantum makes a good chair and is a safe pic if you like it. But to me there’s no comparison to the permobil. Good luck man! Check out a permobil F3! I will never go back to another mid wheel!

Hey, I have had an invacare TDX SP2 NB for nearly 3 years now, was my first center wheel drive chair. It's pretty good and reliable, the speed does decrease when you raise it up but it's not too bad. The biggest issue I have with it though (and this maybe an issue with all mid wheel drive chairs, not sure) is that the turning speed on this particular model is about 50% of the forward/backwards speed by default. As I tend to always stay on max speed and not push the joystick to the max, this made it obscenely slow for turning. The rehab center can change the turning speed to 100% though however this introduced another longer term issue. Since I tend to always prefer to turn left rather than right (easier for my hands to push the joystick left), turning at high speeds, with all your weight in the center on the same wheel just destroys the left tyre over time, making the tyre need replacing every couple of months. I guess that's the trade off you have to make for having the turning control of mid wheel drive at high speeds. But it does get annoying. 😂 Otherwise great chair. Good luck with your search!

Coming from a Permobil user myself. If you go with the M3, you’ll get the light package included now because you’re ordering the chair with all seat functions. You’re used to it already while it’s a different wheel configuration it’s still a perfect chair. Also you’ll have the usb charger standard. I had an invacare when I was little and always had issues. I know your Jayco arm will interface with the M3. The other chairs aren’t the same control module and may not work with the arm.
    I hope this information helps!

Got a new Quantum Edge 3 a few months ago and does go 6.2 mph and 4.5mph elevated. I love it. Pretty good off-road like when you all went down those trails. You would have probably made it between those 2 trees. I use it to fish around the lake and can jump roots to an extent.
I also love the elevation when giving exams too, psychology professor.
You love looking down from your balcony. Looking down going 4.5 mph is great. Just use it on level surfaces.
There are 4 speeds indoor low, indoor moderate, out door moderate, outdoor fast which is the 6.2 mph. In addition, each speed can be adjusted to max or minimum for that speed. So, if you are outdoor fast, you can be adjusted to a lower speed.
I got the midnight blue. You can change colors fairly cheap if you want. Everything that has color is detachable and snap back on. If you really want to get wired, you can get a different color for each component.
Also, it has Bluetooth and the joystick can be used as a mouse which I’ve get tried to figure out but simply because it’s not something I would use on a regular basis.
    Any questions please contact me.

i'm thinking narrow base one @6.5mph gives you better speed and maneuverability. That extra 3-3.5 inches seems like it could help getting you into/out of a tight space. It might mean it's more likely to tip. Speaking of which i think it was 100lbs lighter, which means in case it does tip, easier to get it back up?
Ultimately, it's your decision. I'm looking at this not as one who is in a wheelchair, but trying to imagine/brainstorm how the features would help, but you're better at judging that having to live with it. Whichever you get, i hope you end up liking it!

    1. Ask your OT! They often have personal preferences, experience or have heard a lot about the actual good/bad points of the wheelchairs from users
    2. You can contact the companies directly with specific questions, they are almost always eager to help and will answer questions like top speed while elevated etc
    3. Remember you are a consumer paying for the product, if you want to try multiple just let your OT know that you don’t feel comfortable making a decision till you have tried more than one. It may seem like a hassle but a good health professional will be willing to accomodate to ensure YOU get the best outcomes possible
