I'm 52 and through golf I have 2 good older friends. A guy named Phil who is 93 and went to WW2 aged 15 1/2. He's completely amazing and still talks like he's 70 and moves and drives like he's 60. My other, and closer buddy is Jim. Just 6 months younger than Phil and he fought in the first wave in Korea. He will be 93 July 2 (10 day's away), and is just a great and very tough guy also. I love them both and treasure their friendship!

I wish I knew. I could ask around family and try to find out. Perhaps his son knows. I will have to find out!
One of the stories my uncle told me that reminds me of a scene from Saving Private Ryan (when they first received the orders and chose a translator to go with them) is when he told me of the time he and some others, including a translator, were sent a few miles (I think I remember it was about 3 or so miles) behind enemy lines in a jeep with a white or truce flag to a barn on a farm to receive the surrender of a Kommandant and his soldiers. I remember specifically he told me when they approached the Germans, went to the Kommandant and accepted his surrender; my uncle said (I wish you could've seen and heard him say this, his personality, his accent, how animated he was); when the German surrendered, my uncle immediately said to the him, or rather "barked" at him "Gimme your gun belt!" The translator relayed that and the Kommandant immediately took it off and handed it to him.
I miss him. I have so much regret not getting to know him more, even for other than the amazing WWII stories. He was a fun, delightful person to be around, one of my favorite people at family reunions when I was a little kid.

Saw horrific action. I wish I knew better back then to ask the right questions. But thank you for fighting for our freedom, without great men like you our country wouldn't know the freedom that we have!
