I'm from the US and I've only been to two greyhound tracks, both in the state of Arizona. This video is amazing to me....I've never seen so many people at a greyhound track. I've never heard of Westmead Hawk, but it definitely looks like he was a superstar. Listen to that crowd!
Simple fact was Wimbledon was a total shithole and allowed to be run down for many many years. Surprised it managed to keep the Derby as long as it did to be honest
We have one of Westmead Hawk's daughters as a pet. Her racing name was Droopys Izzy but we just call her Izzy now. She's lovely but somtimes gets a bit excited near small dogs.
best dog race of all time, the crowd, the dog racing nation all on wanting to him, the dogs tenacity and cleverness to weave its way around second to none, get memory!
R. I. P hawk. The best dog I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Maybe one of his sons, mind the net or droopys ward can win the debt in his honour x
its in this video "Greyhound Racing - Westmead Hawk - Dual Derby champion" if you search it , im pretty sure its a derby semi-final after getting hammered at the 1st bend .
Have been to the last 27 Derby finals and it is hard to pick a best final. I'm Slippy was electric and Rapid Ranger.. simply awesome... The Hawk out of this world.. But Slippy Blue for me personally cos I had a £100 on him at 16-1!!! However all Derby finals are magnifique!
@MetalBru01 it's just that i found out in 1915 a black greyhound by the name of Osprey Hawk was born and mick the miller is related to that greyhound thats the only reason why i was thinking that the hawk dogs are some way connected as it is written on the pedigree in the book called The Legend Of Mick The Miller, i bet in some way they are connected but i can't find further info on the likes of westmead hawk
Does anybody have footage of Rapid Ranger beating Sonic Flight? I followed RR all the way through that Derby with £50 on him to win from the start as a 19 year old skint student, only for my flat mate's Mum to phone up and break my Internet connection as the hare was running in the final. Have never seen it, just the result come up on teletext! but happily collected £400 the next day from William Hill. Please point me in the right direction of being able to watch it after all these years...
greyhounds always have plenty of speed, i'm very much sure it has nothing to do with any violence what so ever as i guess it could be like the more you train at something then the better you would become, i also read about where as a greyhound gets older he or she gets stronger something like from the age of two so maybe thats why they run so fast too but also these dogs are differen't to other dogs as they are far slimmer and the lighter you are then the faster you may go
i cant think of the race, but i wanna hear this commentator lose his self in w/hawk performance, by uttering something along the lines of 'good god almighty - he got up' - it was definitely this commentator after a w/hawk victory, he said it live on sky sports
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHICH RACE IT WAS THIS SKY COMMENTATOR SAID ''GOOD GOD'' OR ''GOD ALMIGHTY'' WHEN THE HAWK CAME FROM PRETTY MUCH LAST ENTERING THE HOME THE STRAIGHT AND WON ... ? - ''good god he got up'' - definitely said, because the year after someone was winding up the commentator about him saying it ?

How the hell did we lose Wimbledon and the great derby nights
Greyhound racing has never recovered

what a night this was , back to back derbys , only legends do that !!
One of the best bits of commentary you'll ever hear
I was there that night, and knew he would win it on the back straight. Fantastic, incredible dog, he will always be My Darling Hawk.
0:40 Just Amazing

Great camera work.
Out of the 4 dogs who won the Derby twice who's the best of them
What a legend! It's a shame how they're treated though :( my family own two of Hawk's children, a girl and a boy. They are both beautiful
