EDIT: Just bought the Iri Blue version of this SAS and the pickup configuration is great, gets most of the tones you'd expect with the combination of coil taps and the AS-01, good job PRS! My old EG-2 HSH (sadly stolen in 98) had the Fralin single coil separate, and the versatile switching was great fun, I'd have liked that here, but what's there probably more practical in real world, in the SAS.

That's a really interesting comment as I compared this guitar to a maplewoood necked Fender player Tele earlier today at a music store here in the UK.
The PRS SE Swamp Ash felt, played and looked like a superior guitar in every single department at price point of less than 100 pounds more.
Suffice to say I walked away from the store with a PRS SE Swamp Ash for a decent price after haggling with the store rep.

For me, nowadays, an electric guitar must have either a roasted maple neck or carbon/graphite reinforcement rods in the neck. Played mine today. Gorgeous guitar! And though I have other PRS SE guitars with the 85-15 pups, this new guitar absolutely has it’s own, thoroughly engaging voice! Super versatile! Nice overall build quality. The maple neck with abalone is stunning and the satin finish feels very good. Only one knock; fretwork and the edges of the fretboard are a significant downgrade from the SE DGT. It’s not bad; but usually these are strong positive differences between PRS SE and the competition. So, in this case, whereas I usually describe the fretwork and fretboard edges on SE guitars as “Great and not just good”, on this new guitar they are “Good and not great “. By the way, the new neck joint is an absolute HOME RUN!!!

I really dig this. I have a late 90s CE22, it's the one guitar out of the several PRS that have come and gone from my possession that I never even considered selling. That said i always wanted one with the maple neck. I'd be swapping out at least the humbuckers. I know they've become popular but i just can't do the 85/15s, at least the original pickups they're copying. I find they have WAY too much midrange for my tastes, but that is just my taste. I definitely would rewire the switching on it though. I don't understand some of the choices PRS makes on their switching systems, IMO it's always been the one flaw in them. The really limited master volume/master tone they still use has proven to be a deal breaker for me in the past, specifically on their original 25" Hollowbody line (they did smarten up with the McCarty 594 Hollowbody II). I tend to stay on the neck or bridge pickup on solid bodies, but my 335 and pretty much any semihollow I've played live in the middle position and I use the volume controls to dial them in. You can't do that with a matter volume though😮‍💨. I don't know why they didn't give this a 5- way blade switch. The whole point of a HSH pickup layout is so you can split the coils and get that Strat in-between setting, I don't know why they would go with a 3-way. But fck it, for the price you can't complain.
It looks like a shorter scale than the 25", which if true would be cool.
It's much warmer than I would have expected considering the maple fretboard and ash body. I'm curious as to how consistent the tone is from one to the next. I've been repairing guitars for 25 years and over the hundreds of PRS I've played through, they've proved to be the most consistent sounding guitar from one guitar to the next. Fender and Gibsons can really vary from one to another. You can have two players Strats that are identically spec'd but they can sound and feel quite different. PRS are one of the few guitars that if you've played one model you've pretty much played all of them in that specific model. You really can buy them online sight unseen and base your decision wholly on aesthetics. But ash is one of those woods that can have a marked difference from one example to the next. One will be warm but punchy, while the next is really scooped and bright.

I got one of these the other day. It is my favorite of the SE line-up. If I had a complaint, it would be to teach the assembler how to string a guitar. All tying the high strings to the post does is piss off the the guy trying to get them off without effing up the finish. I put Fishmans in my Myers guitar, not liking the 85/15s. The switching on the swamp ash really changes things for me with that pick-up set. (even playing heavier tones) The discount right now makes the guitar a tremendous value for the price. oh, it is a fat bottom girl. heavy chevy, didn't weigh it yet.

No mention if the neck is satin or glossed over like most SEs due to the neck joint. If it’s as smooth as the super thin satin SS maple neck / fretboard then it’s worth considering. Also, it looks like a 2 or 3 piece body so if it’s not book matched properly you’ll get mismatched streaks in the finish as it appears to be a dye paint job.

But everyone hates the miles and the nf? Sorry but I have seen essentially no bad ideas or guitars from this company. The only bad ones were because guitar center hung them up on the wall and didn’t take care of them and they lost their set up and got beat up by kids in the store. There’s just not a better guitar company right now.

Not a fan of the "treble pickup" "bass pickup" terminology . Both are midrangey pickups in different positions.

These new SEs are coming out hot, but too fast. I can hardly keep track of all of them.
