- I recently came across a video from brototype malayalam on "Dont do this after +2" Argument is that, its better to learn a high paying skill and do internships based on that - and degress or certificates are actually worthless unless its from top tier universities. I am debunking this arguments and putting forward the view that we should strike a balance! of course, skills are extremely important but degrees are not worthless at all!

Disclaimer: Before jumping the ship and commenting - I haven’t said brototype is bad or upskilling is unnecessary! My point is simple - degree and certificates are not worthless.. for someone who completed and have a good academic record- both should go hand in hand!

I don’t agree with this an self learner never stops learning and they will keep learning soft skills too.

I've to agree with you. It's also a fact that you don't necessarily need a computer science degree to become a developer but think of the difference between a guy who had studied CS and a guy who only learnt some high level abstracted frameworks like React or whatever.
The difference is that the CS guy will be able to understand the fundamental working of all the magic going under the hood easily than the non CS guy.
Not saying CS folks are better than developers who didn't learn CS but it gives an edge for them anyways.
Now he's right in a way that our current curriculum isn't in par with the current industry standards. Although I doubt if thats gonna change anytime soon the best thing you could do is get involved in industry scale tech while doing your degree. Start exploring development, cloud or whatever topics interest you. The fact that most students who pick CS doesn't have this enthusiasm or never gets an environment to promote their tech interet is infact a shame.
I'm also of the interest that college is definitely a waste of time unless you're not at the right place but that doesn't mean you should skip the degree. Learn the stuff yourself and upksill yourself in those years. You'll definitely become a better developer than someone who just learnt a few abbreviations like MERN lol.

For the first question, I guess the best thing you could do is to obviously do personal projects or contribute to open source which are more specific and deal with more near low level stuff. There are plenty of such open source projects which require specific knowledge of things at much higher depth than just developing some websites or an app using some tool. Open source contributions are always valued in the industry.
Now for the second question, even though I said that the CS folks have an edge, it is very much dependent on the individual to be very honest. If you're just memorizing some crap just go get some 9 pointer cgpa then you probably don't know anything. At the end of the day it is all about understanding the big picture and understanding how computing works in general. Even though many students pick BTech CS, if you really look into it most of them still dependent on free high quality resources available online for studies whether it be in form of CZcams lectures, books or just reading content. In most cases, this will be much much better and interesting than your college prof ( I really hate that this is how our system is but yeah that's the reality you have).
Study all the important topics like Data structures, OOP concepts, Operating systems, DBMS etc. There are plenty of free courses available online for this. Again this is something that most students overlook on I guess. They think CS is all about programming and learning a bunch of programming languages.
And for your final question. Learning chem in first year of Btech CS (if your university has that) is nothing but absolute waste of time. In fact, the entire first year itself is a waste of time I would say except the C paper (I'm talking about KTU here, there are some universities in India who skip all these unwanted non sense and teach actual computer stuff). This is another thing I hate about how our system currently is. And as I said this is not something we can control it is how it is. Your best bet is to join a good university abroad for CS or find a good one in India. Otherwise just find some good college and just focus on self learning.
Even though I also strongly believe having a degree especially a computer course related degree is not the right way to judge a person's technical knowledge, this is how our current society works. A part of this is due to extremely high competition and they need some form of filtering candidates out (Yeah a terrible practice I know). I can see this attitude changing overtime but getting a degree and then finding a job is still safer and easier than without one. You can still get a good job but it is going to be much difficult without a degree.

Computer science is not just for getting a job in some IT company. There are many career options.
To get jobs in Organisations like ISRO, DRDO, NIC, NIELIT, as Engineer. You need a degree from recognised university and in some cases GATE score is mandatory.
To get research jobs in computer science Masters degree is mandatory in both government and private sector.
To get job as Computer scienctist in government or private sector, Bachelors degree is mandatory.
If they are interested they can move to UPSC side there also degree is mandatory.
Some are interested in Theoretical Computer Science. To get job in that area academic qualification is mandatory.
So degree is not a waste of time. Not everyone is interested in IT jobs. There are other areas in computer science to explore.

I did this when i was still studying in +2 and 2 months before my board exam. and only thing i lacked was this communication thing. thats why brototype is relevant in the field, because to get a high paying job in software engineering field all you need is good programming skills and great communication skill.

Just try to apply some good engineering companies like Google or Microsoft, attend their interviews. There will be around 4-6 rounds of interviews. Atleast 2-3 rounds of interviews will be problem solving. Which requires good mathematical and algorithmic skill. Not just to pass the interview, to become a good software engineer you need these skills. Mathematical knowledge, data structures and algorithms, other core computer science theories, distributed system knowledge are required to become a good software engineer. I don't think we can learn those things just by watching CZcams videos.
There can be people who can learn those rigorous mathematics or algorithms by self study. But I think majority are not much intelligent.
Nowadays these kind of lay people (usually HRs) from various companies promote ideas like:
1. Skill sets are more important than an educational degree (theoretical knowledge).
Mostly people might say degree programmes only give theoretical knowledge. Not useful for practical or real world applications. You don't need to be an engineering/science degree in Computer Science for learning a programming language or to be a frontend web developer. But the real problem is that if people lack knowledge in the technical side (theoretical) of how algorithms are implemented it's gonna give them a hard time. As AI is developing people have to be in backend rather than frontend. Or else AI will take their jobs. Similarly let's take another example from Electronics/Electrical engineering, mostly less enthusiasts will say EMT is not required. But solving Maxwell's eqn is also a skill. Because once you achieve these skills you can apply in different fields not only in theoretical fields but also in experimental fields.
2. B Tech grads are in every sector as a merit.
It's not a big deal to say that B Tech grads are getting job in some other sectors but not in the field of engineering. If you study engineering you must be an engineer. Similarly a physics graduate must be a physicist. If one's not able to achieve these goals then the system and their low quality degree is to be blamed. Not engineering/physics. Degrees are less rigorous.

15 years back I graduated from the same college. my humble advice is experience college life Build friends, tech skills, communication. If you don’t have financial commitments try something your own for 2 years. Or aim for a premium Job, skillset maters for companies, but after a certain point having good friends you can’t value with money. don’t forget having fun with friends . life is journey so experience the route

Mathematical knowledge, data structures and algorithms, other core computer science theories, distributed system knowledge are required to become a good software engineer. I don't think we can learn those things just by watching CZcams videos.
There can be people who can learn those rigorous mathematics or algorithms by self study. But I don't think majority are not much intelligent.

To do compitative programming, you need strong mathematical skills like complexity analysis, computational geometry, graph theory, probability etc.
To learn those things engineering degree will help you. Just now I checked Google careers page and checked the eligibility criteria for Software Engineer role. Minimum eligibility is Bachelor degree or equivalent experience. But the preferred qualification for all level of engineers is Matters degree or PhD you can just verify that now in their official website. Also you can just ask Google or Microsoft recruiter what is the minimum eligibility for SDE roles.
There are exceptional people for them mathematics and core computer science is naturally easy. For them I think they can easily pass the interview by self study.
