I am an overseas Chinese born in the 70s and for my generation, the Wukong lore was imprinted by the animated classic "Havoc in Heaven" - one of SWK's most infamous transgressions before Journey to the West.
The other movies we love were Stephen Chow's "Odyssey to the West" non canon adaptations. They fully tell the story of Wukong's growth from a mischievous violent monkey to a trusted protector of Tripitaka.

As Chinese born in China, I'm just so grateful that people are beginning to show interest in our mythology. The actor 六小龄童 (Liu Xiao Ling Tong) wanted to get closer to the monkeys, he ended up living with one for 6 months. Later on in the story the monkey king acquires great vision like fire (I'm not sure what they translated that into), but in order to get that in his eyes, he put himself in a dark room and used his eyes to follow the burning incense. He ended up with bad vision and glasses. He really dedicated his life for the series.

The whole 25 episodes were made throughout 5 years. Each actor and actress plays so many roles, you probably can't tell but the Wukong's actor plays more than 10 roles in the whole serie, that's how thin the budget was. The whole serie was recorded by ONE camera and ONE cameraman, yes literally one camera. Actually many Japanese manga were inspired by this novel, take Naruto as an example, the shadow clone no jutsu is similar to Wukong's ability which he can turn his hair in to the clone of himself, but they are much weaker than the true self

I don't know why this video was recommended to me, but I do want to say that Sun Wukong at this moment doesn't even have a name nor is he the monkey king yet. He doesn't have any his power either, as he just born. The first few episodes is basically him discovering the world and living a carefree life. Then he realize he can't live forever, as he's mortal after all, and all mortal beings eventually die from old age. This is what made him decided to go to other places that's outside of his home, as he wants to obtain more power and do something about his limited amount of time on earth. The rest is basically him learning his power from a taoist and asked him what his name was but he didn't have any so the taoist gave him the name Sun Wukong. Then he went to the bottom of Eastern Sea to find a weapon that eventually later became known as the Monkey King Staff. The rest is him fighting heaven army and eventually got sealed under 5 Elemental Mountains for 500 years and waited for a monk called of Tang Seng from the Tang Dynasty to seek for scriptures in the west, which he is the reincarnation of Buddha's second disciple. This is what lead to Journey to the West. Rest is history with basically 100 chapters of fighting beasts, monsters, ghosts and spirits along the way while Wukong protected his master, since the reincarnation of Buddha's second disciple is just a human being that has no power to protect himself from monsters and beasts, etc.

FYI, there is another 'Journey to the west a sequel' filmed in 1999 by the same director. It provided supplement to the journey (They have to go through 81 calamities to get the Buddhist sutras) with better graphic quality.

      @@DATONEGAMER25 Yes.
Actually, the TV series introduced basic stories of this journey and made it a household story. In my childhood, the deepest impression about the Journey to the West is the mighty monkey king Sun Wukong.
However, the original novel of Journey to the West is much deeper and has many plots to ponder. For example, in what way the Jade Emperor would send a monkey to guard the immortal Peach garden? Why master puti, the first shifu of Wukong, taught and endowed him supernatural powers and forbade him to tell anything of him? As the audiences grows, they begin to find more details and thoughts of the whole journey. Black myth: Wukong from the Game Science also tells the stories from it's unique view.

In this episode I love the way SunWukong learned how to speak, to eat, to dress and to act like human. He is very brave and clever, way more smart then other monkeys that's why he can be the monkey king and managed his way to humans' world or even gods'.
In this drama SunWukong looks good but according to the book Journey to the West he is actually a bit ugly and scary that's why people are fear of him.
I think you are getting bored watching this drama haha, but it's understandable. There's cultural difference. And this drama is designated for all age, to popularize the basic content of the book(which is much more complex and difficult).

"Journey to the West", also known as "Journey to the West", or "Journey to the West" for short, is the first romantic chapter-by-chapter novel of gods and demons in ancient China's Ming Dynasty. The book has 585,000 words (Shidetang edition) and 100 chapters. It is one of the four great masterpieces of China and one of the four great books. It was written in the middle of the Ming Dynasty in the 16th century, and the author is Wu Chengen of the Ming Dynasty. The book tells the story of Tang Sanzang and his disciples Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, who went to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures. It shows the ancient theme of punishing evil and promoting good, and is a representative work of promoting Buddhism and destroying Taoism. There is also a view that "Journey to the West" is a satirical novel that implicitly satirizes power and officialdom.

its very hard to translate "72 transformations" in English in a right way, even in Chinese, it's hard to explain it in a right way. Actually, it's not really 72 times transformations. It is actually 72 earthly fiends. To fully understand the concepts of the 36 Heavenly Spirits (Tiangang) and the72 Earthly Fiends (Disha), we must first explore the Chinese ancient people's reverence for the stars. Due to limitations in their understanding, ancient people believed that the stars in the sky were closely connected to the fate of nations, individuals, the outcome of wars, and even harvest yields. This belief led to the development of astrology and divination. Particularly within the Daoist framework, the stars held significant importance. They believed that, like the earthly realm, the heavens were governed by a set of rules, and stars played a critical role in maintaining this cosmic order. Many deities worshipped in Daoism were believed to have their origins in celestial bodies or were seen as the rulers of stars, such as the deity Taibai Jinxing (Venus) and the Twenty-Eight Mansions (lunar stations).
Among all celestial bodies, the Big Dipper (Beidou Qixing) holds a particularly special meaning. Due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis, in the northern hemisphere, one can observe that all stars seem to revolve around a specific point in the northern sky, known as the North Celestial Pole. The star closest to this pole is the North Star (Polaris), and the Big Dipper is located nearby. This region of the sky was designated as the "Purple Forbidden Enclosure" (Ziwei Yuan), the most important of the three enclosures in Chinese astronomy, symbolizing the center of the celestial realm. The Big Dipper has a ladle shape and consists of seven stars: Tianshu, Tianxuan, Tianji, Tianquan, Yuheng, Kaiyang, and Yaoguang. Since the Big Dipper moves in a circular motion around the North Star, it holds profound cultural significance.
Surrounding the Big Dipper are numerous smaller stars, collectively referred to as the "accompanying stars" of the Big Dipper. Among these stars are the 36 Heavenly Spirits (Tiangang) and the 72 Earthly Fiends (Disha). Daoism associates each star with a deity. The Tiangang stars correspond to gods such as the Celestial Leader Star (Tian Kui), the Celestial Warrior Star (Tian Gang), the Celestial Planner Star (Tian Ji), and the Celestial Peace Star (Tian Xian), collectively known as the Thirty-Six Heavenly Spirits. The Disha stars correspond to deities like the Earth Leader Star (Di Kui), the Earth Fiend Star (Di Sha), the Earth Brave Star (Di Yong), and the Earth Hero Star (Di Jie), collectively known as the Seventy-Two Earthly Fiends.
