    It hurts to hear your final thoughts on Song of Achilles, but I understand! 😭💔 I think it was marketed wrong on social media; it’s not a romance, it’s a tragedy. Most Greek mythology stories are tragic and are about selfish/flawed people.

    Its so funny because your spoiler thoughts on SOA is exactly why I loved the book, its a tragedy that showed the cost of pride and ego. I loved the frustration and emotions it brought from me. I love books that make me feel something xx

    Your thoughts on the Song of Achilles are funny to me because the things you said were the reasons I loved it and cried for it. The fact that we knew from the beginning what was going to happen made it so heart wrenching, like watching a train crash in slow motion. Every thing they did to prevent the disaster fed into it 😭

  • @emmaeger9765

    In my opinion SoA is a tragic love story not a romance. Tiktok in general loves to latch on to tropes to get more people hopefully interested in books and I can fully understand why reading SoA thinking it was a romance would be very jarring.

    12:03 A big part of Greek Mythology is a distinct disconnect between the reader and the hero, the hero being flawed and larger than life, because these myths begin as tales and tragedies passed down through history, losing detail in order to preserve the structure of the cultural aspect of it, leaving the actual story a shell to be reimagined and reworked like Madeline Miller did for A Song of Achilles. I get how it felt disconnected at times, but this was intentionally done to preserve the integrity of Greek tales and the way they’re told.
    It’s too bad that you didn’t enjoy it, this book is the one that got me back into reading/fall in love with literature again!!
    Your critiques make sense, I just think that those who don’t like it enter the book with a certain expectation and when it’s not met, they’re disappointed.

  • @alwaysgettingthere
    @alwaysgettingthere Před měsícem +42

    *SPOILERS** song of achilles is 100% a tragedy, but the best part of the book for me were the final few pages about how proper burial and accurate remembrance is so important, because the romantic relationship between Achillies and Patroclus was often erased in other retellings before this book

    i think you would’ve enjoyed SoA way more if you had some background knowledge on the iliad. the iliad is a greek tragedy, not a love story. a lot of greek mythology follows flawed and imperfect characters and achillies is about the cost of selfishness, it’s achillies heel, he loved patroclus yet his selfish was the cost for his life, it was his downfall not his salvation. i wish tiktok and social media didn’t market this story as a romance because it’s not, i think if you had gone into the book with the knowledge that it’s a tragedy you would’ve felt differently.

  • @kaitlynparrish9551
    @kaitlynparrish9551 Před měsícem +1

    I just recently read a song of Achilles too and I had the same exact thoughts about it. Maybe it's because I wasn't super well versed in greek mythology before reading it but I did still go into it knowing how it would end and that Achilles story was a tragedy, not a love story. But regardless of that I didn't really enjoy Achilles or Patroclus for the same reasons you said. And once I finished it, it really had no profound impact on me, I just moved on with my day. So I also gave it 3 stars.

    The Song of Achilles is a hard one because it is literally a Greek tragedy marketed to focus on the love story, except Miller's version to me always just seemed like it was a pretty standard retelling. I liked it a lot, but I preferred her telling of Circe's story. That one she knocked out of the water.

    In the Iliad, Patroclus is also a great warrior, and that is why no one suspected that he was not Achilles when he disguised himself as him. So the fact that Madeline turned him into such a whiney character and literally Achilles' wife in the background of the war is infuriating.
    Also, pederasty in Greece represented a relationship between an adult man in a position of power and practically a boy, a younger teenager, meaning that relationship was based purely on the imbalance of power. The reason why the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus would have been so sensational even in that era is that it was a relationship between two equals and she chose to ignore it.

    Patrocluse’s only personality was obsessing over Achilles. He was bland as hell. He didn’t even know himself and Achilles was acting like an arrogant ass who thought he deserved Patrocluse’s love and only wanted it bc he worshipped him.
